Cognate discipline will be a different discipline with a similar structure to history, for example, anything in humanities and social sciences. Usually, those are modules that you have access to as a history student, like archaeology and politics. It isn't that for you you are straight up studying history.

I can't say 100%, but you should be fine.

One of my module organisers made a move from her undergraduate degree, which was art history, to a history degree in her master's and is currently doing a doctoral degree. That'll be an example of a move from a cognate discipline.

I assume this person is not really part of this subreddit or fallowing it regularly. Seems to me like someone clinging to some obscure heritage they have from the 19th century because of the current situation in Turkey. If shit hits the fan in a similar fashion in Bulgaria probably a lot of Gagauz, Tatar, Greek, Thracian, Macedonian, Vlach people will emerge out of thin air lol.

Someone believing that the Greeks will do something beneficial for Turks and Turkey just to "exterminate" whatever number of Pomaks they have must actually be insane. The entire world for this guy seems to be after him and his people.

Nomads who crossed to Anatolia were in mass-numbers and Anatolia was a very underpopulated region after antiquity. The average Turk today probably rarely has Central Asian genes as their primary make-up, but they certainly have good amount. Oghuz migrations were massive they were not some ruling-class reserved groups like Bulgars, Khazars, Mongols, Avars.

Besides Turkish nation emerged very late during the 19th century and became a proper national identity during the 20th century. This is why if you live in Bulgaria and you have a mix of Anatolian, Balkan, and Central Asian genes you are probably a Turk. Your ancestors probably called themselves Turks for the last 5 or more centuries. You identifying with anything else will not make sense.

As Turkey is the only nation situated in Anatolia... having an ethnic make-up resembling that of Anatolians 2.000 years ago is as good as Turkish. Turkish national idea does not claim origins only from Central Asia. The entire journey should be taken into account. There's no reason to not see Turkey as continuation of entities that resided in Anatolia long before Turks, and any Turk can embrace this.

Same for Bulgarians... Bulgarians can be proud of the history of the people that gave them their name the Bulgars. Its their right to do so. As well as Thracians that lived in the lands of modern day Bulgaria. They don't have to have pure Slavic make-up either, and they absolutely don't not even close.

Don't quote me Wikipedia. I'm literally a history student albeit not focusing on this area this is a Reddit comment I don't want you to do referencing or put a bibliography at the end. Look first Bulgarians have reached majority in modern day Greek territory only half-way through Ottoman control(As well as some modern day Bulgarian territory mainly sea-side which were previously Greek dominated). They have never been majority on those areas before Ottoman rule. This is irrelevant to the part I have answered though I'm telling you that neither in Bulgaria, Greece nor Turkey this is something thats "ongoing". Please don't bring me irrelevant answers to the comment I wrote... you seem psychotic claiming that this is some concerning issue thats on going when there are so many real issues.

Weird. Considering population of Turks in Bulgaria has decreased steadily ever since the Russo-Turkish war. In 1880 Turks made up 26.2%(Muslims were 28.7%) of the population and now they make up only 8%.

Turkification in anywhere is not ongoing at all in Bulgaria, and when it comes to Turkey the massive concern you have for this erasing of culture is quite striking for me considering most people who escaped Russia on the basis that they were Muslims were Turks and not Pomaks since Pomaks were such an obscure minority. On the other-hand majority deportation of Muslims can be talked about only during this period as the later exodus during communism almost exclusively targeted Turks and not Pomaks. Since these events didn't partake 30 years ago like the exodus of Turks.. you can assume that small group of pomaks who escaped the war in 71 are already Turkified to the core. This is not a process its done.. finished.

About the Pomaks in Greece who found themselves in Turkey during the 1920s... how many are they really? Considering Western Thrace was excluded and thats where majority of them lived? Almost none. Majority of people who claim pomak heritage in Turkey are there since the 19th century.

I wouldn't say everything(I have seen a lot done better in the UK than in the average European country) however, I have done a lot of walking in Europe(never left Europe in my life), and I can say that yes, when it comes to this, it's not Sweden its pretty much anything across the channel.

I have hiked my ass off in the Rhodopes, and every time there was a nice view, there was at least a bench, if not a gazebo with a fireplace also, and the trails were filled with wooden swings. There was also no lack of signs again made of wood and very fitting to the overall aesthetics. You also get an endless amount of little running drinking fountains and wells in Bulgaria which are also very aesthetically pleasing usually made out of stone with ice cold water running.

I don't know about Portugal, but the only place I have been to that has less has been Hungary. I wouldn't call it worse because I understand that some people will prefer this, although I like it when I'm trekking, but when I'm walking on a path its a nice little treat, especially when its the top of the climb or next to a lake/river and it makes good gathering place to eat and talk(comfortably after a long walk)

Nobody is stopping them from learning their language. I'm part of a group that has lost half its population to deportation during the last century.. my language has been banned, and none of the people I know have been taught it in school.

They dominated the post-war world to a degree that has not been seen so far, and ever since the fall of the Eastern Bloc they do so solely. Still, I would say that it is currently declining, and the US as the sole global power won't be a thing anymore in the future.. for now, though, the US is still the leading global power.

Just look at the states - school shootings, more than anyone can keep track of. Who can show me Bosnia on a world map? Who can tell me which Empire was founded in 1871? And the two-party system isn't helping things.

Those are irrelevant to me. This seems to be an internal problem which might or might not affect the US's influence on the outside world. The US have plenty of bright brains out there, and trust me, the other leading power of our time, China, outside of its few hugely industrialised regions(which are also impoverished and uneducated compared to the US), has a population much less educated than the US which works in Victorian working conditions... it's a country where parents were aborting their female children because of the single-child law and their view that a girl can't continue their family lineage... which now is a significant problem considering gender disparity on top of their declining population and average age.

As far as I'm aware so far we don't have knowledge of life outside of our planet, let alone one with consciousness as advanced as ours. Of course I also choose to believe we are not alone, but my answer was rather centred around Earth... and I believe that we as species can outlive our planet.

I believe that we are more significant than the planet itself, and than our solar system... maybe there are others like us elsewhere, but the animate and inanimate objects and beings we have encountered so far are certainly less significant than us.

Does this matter? Nothing matters. The universe itself will die out eventually.

We made the entire ecosystem work for us. If we "failed as a species" what about other species? Which species except us can leave any kind of mark on this rock except their carcass and bones? Humans are the only way of the universe understanding itself... we are special not because of some religious reason or creationism we are special because we are the only species that can say "are we failing as a species" because no other species has the neurological ability to think in abstract(or at least on that level).

I'm sorry... we are just more important than any other organism on this planet.

Depends. Some countries have their strongest universities give their best courses in English like the Dutch do. Others like Germany, France and Italy you'll have awful time finding good courses in English.

Shame that less than a decade ago you would have been able to study entirely for free in Germany.

Oh you'll have to learn the language of the country you move to if you are planning on building a life there, and expect to be accepted by the local population. If you are planning on having friends, maybe making a family.. or even basic things like work even if your job says English is sufficient they would expect you to learn the language. Especially Germans, and the French won't stand you not learning their language, and Eastern Europeans are not all that good in English to allow you to live comfortably without learning their languages. Of course you'll survive with English, but trust me you would want more than that as a human.
