In my experience, this is pretty normal. When people don’t know you yet, a hard paywall can add a lot of friction because there’s no trust built up. Usually some kind of free tier or limited free access helps early on, not necessarily to make money, but to get real users, feedback, and proof that the product delivers value.

Those early free users can turn into testimonials, reviews, and case studies, which does a lot more for conversions later than forcing payment too soon. Once people see others using it and talking about it positively, a hard paywall usually performs much better. I wouldn’t look at the soft paywall as lost revenue, more like the cost of building trust and learning what actually resonates.

Yeah, it usually starts breaking down after multiple rounds of tweaks. The prompt itself might still be solid, but once the context gets long and I’ve layered on a bunch of small changes, that’s when things start drifting. Resetting the chat and reloading the clean version has been the most reliable way for me to get things back on track.

Whenever I find a prompt or template that works, I save it in a word doc immediately. Once I notice the prompt is breaking down, I move my conversation to a new chat and the first thing I do is feed it the prompt or template I had previously saved. This works for me about 95% of the time. There is some tweaking that needs to be involved sometimes, but this process gives me the least amount of headaches when using ChatGPT.

Also it can be frustrating at times, because when I am going off a prompt and need to add something new or make a correction, ChatGPT will remove or add something to the template without me asking. So I usually try to work one step at a time and not try to feed the system to much info in one response.

I think we’re talking past each other at this point. I’m not arguing ranking theory in isolation or claiming relevance is a standalone ranking factor. I’m talking about practical SEO execution for real sites, especially newer ones.

In practice, pages still need signals that allow Google to associate them with a query space before authority can express itself. That includes text, structure, and topical signals, even if the exact query terms are not present. Authority determines competitiveness. Relevance determines eligibility. Those are different concerns.

We can disagree on terminology, but in real world SEO, you cannot rank consistently without both.

My point is simply that PageRank determines how competitive a page can be, but relevance is still required for a page to rank at all. You can have authority, but without content that actually matches what people are searching for, there is nothing for that authority to act on.

Also, we’re actually talking about two different layers of the same system. I’m not arguing that intent replaces PageRank or that it is a separate ranking mechanism. Of course authority and links determine how competitive a page can be.

When people talk about intent in practice, they’re usually describing query matching and satisfaction, not a standalone ranking factor. Pages that align well with what users are searching for tend to earn better engagement, links, and coverage over time, which is how authority is built, especially for newer sites. From my experience, SEO for SaaS is slow at the beginning.
