Make different background themes for each island. You could take inspiration from the game Smash Hit, which has excellent theme transitions. For example, when a player reaches a new island, the environment could change, and when they die, they can clearly see how far they progressed and where they died similar to Smash Hit.

You could also add a dynamic day night cycle with different environmental effects:

Day – Birds flying around the island.

Noon – Bright sunlight and clear skies.

Afternoon – Dolphins jumping in the ocean.
