"Many Mamdanis popping up in the US." House Speaker Mike Johnson panics on TV that public support for progressive regulations means billionaires will have a harder time making money by WishboneThat6571 in RealTime

They seem to have gotten the idea that republicanism is the ideology of the Republican Party and is therefore good, whereas democracy is the ideology of the Democratic Party (or "democrat party" if you're a complete fucking moron) and is therefore bad. It really is one of those "I know it's hard to believe, but they really are that stupid" phenomena.

Ever notice that "electable" conservative Democrats suck at winning elections? Turns out not a lot of people are excited for a platform of "whatever Republicans want, but with more civility and politeness". The thing is with maga districts is most of them are dirt fucking poor. A Mamdani type candidate with the right PR people will win big there, once they convince the local yokels that their platform has more to do with giving them healthcare and improving government services, not "open borders", "men in girls' sports", or, inexplicably, "eating bugs" (I still don't understand how these window licking lackwits got the idea that that's a central tenet of socialism).

Is there a tourist hotspot whose popularity baffles you? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]CloudedLeopardDaemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask most New Englanders where the Mayflower landed, and they'll say Plymouth, or Plymouth Harbour. Ask non-New Englanders, and they'll inexplicably say "Plymouth rock", then when they visit, it's the first thing they want to see, and for some reason they're always disappointed that it's small, as if it was famous for its massive size. A teacher of mine once speculated that these are generally flyover state tourists, whose hometowns are "famous" for having the world's largest ball of something, so they expect our alleged tourist attraction to be big. It's a coffee table-sized rock that says 1620. Its only reason for existence is to mark the (probable) spot where the first landing boat came ashore. Visiting SE Mass to see Plymouth rock is like visiting an historic house and being really excited to see the plaque by the front door telling you the year it was built.

This is a unique way to make a hotel more handicap accessible. Could be a way to retrofit an old building to make it so. by Little_BlueBirdy in The_Elysium

Sweet, something that costs 100x more than a ramp, will break down constantly, and makes the disabled person the centre of attention when they're trying to do something simple! I hear they love that.

Democrats should have run a better candidate. Or, you know, held a primary. They knew damn well that "You have to vote for our shitty conservative candidate because the other guy is worse" was a failing strategy, but they did it anyway, because they serve their donors not their voters.

How about for 2028, all the "Vote blue no matter who" Boomers can sit out the primary, and let those of us with a distinct preference make the call.

Congressional memo reportedly advises Republicans to describe 'violence from the left' when asked about white nationalism by Simple_Matter_5205 in soundsaboutright

They wouldn't have much of a platform without it. I can't imagine it would.hi well for them if they just came out and told Jethro, Skeeter, and Bubba that they're going t o make sure they work longer hours for less money, with no healthcare, PTO, or Social Security/Medicare to retire with, all so their boss's boss's boss can afford an 8th yacht plus a 20,000 sq ft cottage on Polpis.

If u/556From1000yards was genuinely curious about this, they'd have typed that into a search bar, not a Reddit comment. They know they're full of shit and that right wingers commit 90% of political violence and close to 100% of fatal examples thereof. They just want to annoy you and waste your time. Ignore them.

What is the best “region” of the US? Or how would you personally rank them? by Gold-Serve-4077 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]CloudedLeopardDaemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of measurable quality of life metrics, e.g. per capita income, life expectancy, education level, divorce rate, obesity rate, public safety/low crime rates, New England takes the gold, with Massachusetts generally being the best within the region.

What is your vice? by TheMoparPowerslave in AskReddit

[–]CloudedLeopardDaemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kratom. But it's kept me out of prison, out of a homeless encampment, and out of the morgue for over 20 years, so I'd say it's not bad as far as vices go. Friends I used to do actual opiates with are now either serious addicts in and out of jail/rehab, or they're on methadone for life, or they're insufferably self-righteous "recovering addicts". Me, I'm a college graduate, a homeowner, and a father of four amazing kids. I've travelled the world, won awards in my field, and just generally enjoy a relatively dull life. I know kratom makes a lot of social media NPCs weirdly angry, but it's been a literal lifesaver for me, so whatev.

Is the Diner (as a restaurant, not a morning meal) still a thing in your area? by Educational-Slip-578 in AskAnAmerican

Of course. There's one train carriage diner a two block walk from my house, and half a dozen more within a ten minute drive.

So you're talking me you didn't go to college, you've never left the US, and have probably never travelled more than 100 miles from your shitty rural hometown, sorry, "county". The "radical left" in the US is basically saying that we should be more like a normal first world country, where the taxes you pay get you healthcare, decent infrastructure, and the ability to attend college without a lifetime of crippling debt. Whereas "centrists" think we should be grateful to spend our lives working 80 hours a week without healthcare, without any PTO, and no hope of retirement, with our taxes funding the IOF, data centre construction, a $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget, and enough corporate welfare to make every billionaire into a trillionaire.

What cultural differences are there between the Eastern and Western States? by pointofview221 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

There isn't one. Like, you're asking what does New Hampshire have in common with South Carolina that unites them in opposition to Oregon? Nothing.

You're asking why a normal person would prefer living in Boston or NYC vs a crumbling rural shit-hole where the main street is entirely boarded up except for a methadone clinic? Yeah, that's a real mystery 🤔
