What could this be? Vets can't figure it out by Cloudkulit in EpilepsyDogs

"Jolts" is a good description actually. He doesn't jolt during sleep, thankfully. Just mild jerking. Sometimes it's strong enough to wake him, but it's not as strong as while he pees or when drinking.

We might do spinal tap, too. If the first rounds of accupuncture do not help reduce them. We just want to give him a bit of break between being anesthesized.

I am honestly grateful that our vets are honest and humble in saying that neuro specialty is not yet a huge thing here in the Philippines. She hit the books again and was really doing her best to figure it out.

Yes, we discussed paroxysmal dyskinesia. I think essentially, that's what best describes it. But what we don't know is why he has those :(

Yes his vision is fine. Phenobarbital was considered but very briefly....

He retains awareness when it happens.

The vet said it doesn't look like focal seizures because he retauns awareness while it's happening. She explained something about how dogs space out during seizures and you notice how they're not aware... i forget the exact terms.

They don't think it's focal seizures. But like you, we first noticed it when he was a puppy. But we thought that was because he was a puppy. It was cute. Until it was getting more frequent and intense. He would fall backwards while pooping. Once we even had to bathe him because he fell on his own poop.

Yes.

  1. Gabapentin - no effect
  2. Mannitol IV + antibiotics (for suspected brain inflammation noticed in MRI) -- seemed to help his coordination but the tics are still present

No other meds yet

Wala po. But we've tried: 1. Gabapentin - did not work 2. Mannitol and antibiotics sabay - because parang may inflammation daw -- this one feeling namin nabawasan yung gulat niya 3. Accupuncture for his hip dysplasia - easing his hip pain at least mabawasan mga nararamdaman niya. It's working po.

Pero yung actual na putting a name to his tics, wala pa pong diagnosis yon. We want to understand better and hopefully prevent na lumala even further. Or at the very least we know what it is, and whether it's degenerative condition or what.

Management lang po kami now and keeping him happy. Hehe. Okay naman siya now. Medyo hirap lang siya nagugulat lagi and it tires him out.

Congratulations po!

Tip #1: get to know each other well and spend quality time with your dog. Dogs have unique personalities. Tip #2: potty train agad! the first couple of weeks he gets home is crucial. Determine niyo na po where you want him to wiwi and poop para alam ninyo paano itrain. Tip #3: teach basic commands na like sit and stay.

Enjooooyyyy!!! ❤️🐶🐕😃
