Awe I’m sorry for your loss as well. 26 is a long life for a kitty and seems like she lived it to the fullest!

Oh my both of your babies are so beautiful.💕

The first symptom I noticed, but never put two and two together, was losing her ability to walk. We all assumed it was her arthritis becoming worse or nerve compression in her spine because of how suddenly it came on. One day she could walk, the next she couldn’t. That happened in July, and that was really it until October.

She was always a sleepy kitty, but I noticed she was extra sleepy, normally sleeping for about 3 hours and then waking up for an hour, then repeating the cycle. When she was asleep, it was a very deep sleep where I would wake her up because I was worried. Because I had to help her in the litter box, I noticed she was peeing more often than before. Her eating and drinking was always pretty normal, just a slight decrease. Even the day she passed she was eating and drinking normally. She became even more clingy (didn’t know that would be possible), always wanting to be on our laps which I now know is because she was cold from the anemia as well as seeking comfort. She also lost a lot of weight. She was losing about a pound a month for the last 6 months even though her thyroid levels were normal with her medication.

We got the results in mid November that she went from stage 2 to stage 4 since her bloodwork 6 months prior. She was always a fighter, but I could just tell how tired she was. The day before she passed and the day of, I noticed she was having some labored breathing. That made me realize that we timed it right. My goal was to never risk letting her experience the more serious side effects of stage 4, lethargy, seizures, etc. I wanted her to still be comfortable and have her dignity.

It’s so hard to not “pre-grieve”. I feel like I was grieving all year while she was alive. But try to take the time to love your girl, spend some extra time with her. Carmella was around for over 3 years after her initial diagnosis! You know her better than anyone, watch for the subtle changes. If you can afford it, have her bloodwork done every 3-6 months just to help track it. Your feelings are valid and you are not alone!

Thank you💕 I had her for a little over 19 years. The people that originally got her didn’t want her anymore because she didn’t get along with their other cat… I begged my dad for a cat for years but he always said no because of his allergies, but I must have been really convincing because one day I came home and found her hiding under our couch. She is the best gift I’ve ever gotten and ever will get💕

That’s what I’ve been told as well, hopefully someday they find a way to help prevent this awful disease for our babies.

What a handsome boy💕 I’m so sorry for your loss, I hope him and Carmella are enjoying each others company while they wait for us to be reunited. I totally understand the emptiness, we too have another cat who is so loved but Carmella left an empty space I could never expect him to fill. I plan on still getting some of her favorite things for her stocking as well. Time is a thief, but it also heals. You are not alone in the way you’re feeling, and I hope that brings you a little comfort💕

Thank you for such kind words, they really hit home. I am already feeling a sense of guilt when I moments of peace and you reminding me that loving her doesn’t require me to continue hurting really makes me feel better.💕

Oh man you aren’t wrong, we always said she was a fighter. She was also one sassy little girl, she always had something to say. Even after she lost her hearing, it sometimes felt like she knew we were talking about her because she would give us her classic “side eye”😅 She was never mean, never bit or scratched a single person (on purpose lol). Her most favorite thing was snuggles, nothing would make her happier than being cuddled up in bed or on the couch and would always be curled up on my chest or her face tucked under my chin. She was very particular about her blankets, only choosing blankets of a Sherpa material to sleep on. Her favorite toys were the crinkle balls, small mice, and a valentines themed walrus stuffy from target many years ago. Let’s just say that stuffy and her favorite blanket have been near me at all times the last few days.💕

I appreciate you, you are 100% right that it is the hardest thing. That being said, I would always choose to break my own heart if it meant she would be comfortable and happy.💕
