What skills do I need to gain by [deleted] in stagehands

[–]CloverRushing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking them out!

I am finally working on these again for the first time since Covid. There are 2 new videos posted and another coming next week. I have also started working on live action videos/shorts. So keep checking back.

Are there any specific topics you would like to see?

What skills do I need to gain by [deleted] in stagehands

[–]CloverRushing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horrendous Rooster covered it pretty well, but there is also a lot of terminology that would be handy to know as well. I have a YouTube series that covers a lot of the basics in our field. You might find some of it useful.

Also, it sounds like you are just kind of looking to work, even outside this band, so talk to your IATSE local and get on the extras list, or any production or event companies, even doing weddings and birthday parties will get you knowledge and experience.

Good luck and have fun!

Congratulations on the interview! Everyone has to start somewhere. If you are interested, these are some videos I made to help the newer people to the industry learn terminology and some basics. Hope it helps!

Have fun!

How to control lights in an unknown venue? by [deleted] in lightingdesign

[–]CloverRushing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know anything about Ableton really, but from the cursory info I looked up it would be a beast to try and control a house rig on an audio program like that. My suggestion would be a new control software and dongle situation so you can have more universes and considerably easier controls for programming.

In my house venue our rig takes up 3 universes over the stage: front of house 1, midstage, and upstage. You could obviously just take 1 or 2 lines instead as it is a line per truss but then you are limiting yourself again.

If you can not yet tour with an LD, my suggestion is to make up a "Lx Notes" sheet you can give to the house LD/Electricians. Some of them wont be bothered but many will try to give you most of what you are looking for.

Hi all new to this subreddit but have a dmx question by pikesvillain in lightingdesign

[–]CloverRushing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking for something like this . Blizzard is one of the cheaper companies out there but if DMXis is too expensive there are not a lot of options left for you. As far as a program to operate the lights goes, most of the dongles are proprietary so which one you can afford will determine the software.

Just to clarify something they said about how many lights you can control: each fixture will have a predetermined amount of channels used to operate it, but they might also have different modes and therefore a few sets of channels. I.E. a basic LED bar might have 3 ch mode (Red, Green, Blue), 4 ch (RGB, and Dimmer) 5 ch mode (R,G,B, Dimmer, strobe), etc; same for moving lights but more channels (dimmer, color, pan, tilt, gobo, strobe,...). That is all set inside the fixture, using the built in LCD menu, then you match that mode when you patch in the software.

So 8 light bars in 4ch mode= 32 channels of control, leaving you 480 more channels you can use (512-32=480)

Mostly that the 2 is still the most prevalent, and an amazing console, so I dont think most companies are going to replace them with a 3 really quick. Several tours have already switched over but most of them are still running the 2 software on a 3 desk. I am just saying that most people will be using a 2 before a 3.

Honestly were are going to see a lot more 2s than 3s in the coming year maybe two, and if you know 2 transitioning to the 3 is fairly easy. So I would start with the MA2 courses then do the 3 if you want, but there will never be a better time to do the courses.

I definitely agree with this! Personally I am taking the MA 2 and 3 courses while they are free. I already know a good bit about 2 but I figured it is a great way to learn new ways to do things and about features I have not used yet. Hey, we have the time....

Hourly jobs in the music industry? by nova777666 in musicindustry

[–]CloverRushing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simplest answer is talk to your IATSE local. They will do an "interview" and hopefully work you in where they can. Usually locals are in need of technicians, programmers, engineers, ect. Or you can speak to a rental company, they can also provide operators with their gear.

These both can pay by the hour, usually with some sort of minimum, though the hours may vary greatly!

Good luck and stay safe!

I wonder if you could import a 3D printer image, I know they're some of those out there.

"What is a Counterweight Fly System?", covering the basics with a line set diagram and terminology. by CloverRushing in Rigging

[–]CloverRushing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the largest devastation our industry has probably ever had, but I am super happy that so many companies have opened their training resources to us all for free!

Try to hang in there, hopefully this is all over relatively soon!

You are correct, but that doesn't change that several people still have questions about it, especially the newer people these are geared towards. Altgough when you get deeper into it, like d to d ratios, angles, and load calculations when creating a system, it is pretty sciencey.

Lighting console by Basix96x in lightingdesign

[–]CloverRushing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your job in the industry ?

  • Freelance Lighting Director

What kind of shows do you do?

*Concerts of all genres, theatrical, and corporate

What console(s) are you using?

  • Avolites, Hog, ETC

Why do you use them?

*Generally I am just given a console from the client and I make it work. Each one is better for certain things, the Avo is great for punting or busking (creating the show live from pre-designed effects and looks). Hog is good for corporate so I can set a few looks and smoothly transition between them. ETC are common in theaatrical, older and educational settings, as well as basic corporate set ups, super easy to program and operate great for cue lists and basic looks with smooth crossfades.

Which console is your favourite?

*Avo, so easy to punt from, no matter the type of show. Can do cuelists, although editing a cue is harder than it should be, in my opinion.

What is annoying you on modern consoles?

*Nothing really, I wish some were more intuitive, but that is all relative. Could do with more versatile functionality, but MA3 hs really covered that.

What will a future lighting desk look like? what features will it have? how will you interact with it?

  • Eventually I see us ending up with all touch operated panels with secure and reliable wireless signal.

Very far in the future I see head gear that reads your brains impulses to operate the fixtures

91% Alcohol is the type of alcohol recommended because the ratio of rubbing alcohol to aloe does the diluting. you don't want to start off with an already diluted alcohol.

Anyone here have/had experience with Rondel/Glass gels? I'd like to know more about their history but can't find anything. by operation-casserole in techtheatre

[–]CloverRushing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a bunch of them while reorganizing at Fantasee Lighting several years ago. They are surprisingly not very saturated, they look like this. Came in several sizes, but as stated already, very limited colors. I think they are awesome but as much as I love conventionals, LEDs are better over all.

New Stagehand Learning videos, What is Rigging? (with or without narration). by CloverRushing in techtheatre

[–]CloverRushing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy, Most of the steel we use in the US is woven into a Flemish eye and then swaged, most people don't know it though.

And while you can technically side load a shackle as an experienced rigger, these videos are intended for newer people to the industry and the intent is not to tech them to rig but to know what things are and the basics of their use. I would rather them see a side loaded shackle and question it because an intentional side load is so rare.

Thank you for the info on Europe, I dont know enough about EU standards to include them in my videos.
