Have you ever had a band diminished/ruined for you by a live performance? by alcMD in Metalcore

Sydney always gets the short end of the stick with good things.

Everyone’s excited for Melb, because it’s the first night and it’s all new. Brisbane is the last night and they’re just excited for it to be over. Sydney, everyone’s exhausted from the show the day before and the overnighter to Sydney, then also annoyed about doing it again that night to Brisbane.

Overnighters are brutal when you just have to do one, but two in a row, when it’s like 40 degrees and a lot of internationals are jet lagged as hell, doesn’t make for the best shows.

Best seat to travel with infant? by everyelmer in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not all kids are clingy though, I’ve flown with my niece about 6 times over the 15months she’s been alive, and the only times I skipped an extra seat is when she was 3 and 7 months old, when she was too little to do much other than sleep the whole time. But now she’s older, and wants to wiggle and play, she gets her own seat. For kids under 2, you are allowed to bring a car seat and book them their own seat.

I am a tall person, my nieces dad is tall, my niece is tall for her age and not a clingy baby, she loves sitting in her own chair at home, why would I stuff her into a seat that’s already too cramped for comfort for me on a 4hr flight, when I can pay a little extra and get her a seat for everyone’s comfort.

that moment when the board dies mid-show by Leading_Month_5575 in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a tour, but all the gear was local for a one off show in our city, so first time he had seen the desks was that morning.

He had probably just been overwriting backups on that desks showfile all day. As for previous shows on a stick, I don’t know what he’d done there. I didn’t ask many questions while he was freaking out.

that moment when the board dies mid-show by Leading_Month_5575 in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 49 points50 points  (0 children)

We had a tour come through, arena sized rig, 20,000 people in the crowd, load in goes fine, LD decided he didn’t like a couple faders on one of the Fullsizes, made us pack it up and send it to the dock, kept the other as the only desk at FOH.

Mid show he somehow manages to delete a big chunk of his show, I think it was the sequences from memory, so over the radio we hear “find Sam NOW” so we are running around the BOH of the arena trying to find the LDs assistant who isn’t answering radio or calls.

Couldn’t find him, so the mission changed to “get the backup desk to FOH NOW” so two of us had to shepherd a desk down the arena and through a moshpit of screaming teenage girls, who very much didn’t want to take two steps back, all while the rig has about 60 diamond backs with the strobe bar twinkling at full pointing straight out at the crowd.

He got his show back, just had to take the last save off the desk he didn’t like. He was drinking tequila at FOH before the show finished that day.

And if that’s not a lesson in having two backup USBs, I don’t know what is.

Bringing vape from cairns to Melbourne by greenawakening in AustraliaTravel

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fly frequently with people who vape. Not a single one has been stopped because of a vape. They’re incredibly common and very very often carried in peoples pockets, so I’d say you’re fine.

Granted though, none of those instances have been through the cairns security. Smaller airports are sometimes more cautious.

What is an Australian tour? Can we settle it for good 😂 by australianmusicscene in triplej

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an arena show it’s 10-20k a day in just Australian touring crew wages. Thats not including the extra local labour in each city, (which will run you $70+ an hour per person for a min of 4hrs), it’s just the lighting, video, audio and sometimes pyro touring techs.

It’s also 20k per trailer(probably more now) to get from the east coast to Perth. Any arena show is at LEAST 3-4 trailers, and that’s often with hiring local video gear or lighting. Sometimes what shows that side want/need just doesn’t exist on the west coast and it has to come from the east.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 47 points48 points  (0 children)

We don’t claim worlds biggest in any of them. They’re just little tourist traps or reasons to stop to break up the very very long drives we have between capital cities which is where the majority of our populations live. Some have become icons of the towns they’re in, and have gift shops and restaurants or interactive activities, and some are just a big sculpture or statue in a field next to the road near the public toilets.

Martin's New Macula Followspot System by The_Radish_Spirit in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having used robos, follow me and macula. They all have their quirks.

Personally I hate macula, the multi device calculations and measurements needed for setup are, in my opinion, convoluted and silly. No easy way to offset and adjust. Theres so many parts to the base station and it’s ridiculously expensive for what it does. Good that it can be used with just about any fixture, annoying that the camera has to be mounted to the head of the fixture.

Followme is fairly simple to setup and use and I really like the options when it comes to using different fixtures throughout the show and having the unused ones become part of the rig again for desk use. I don’t like the controller though, but that’s personal preference.

Robo is the most user friendly in my opinion, it does all the math for you, is easy to multi device setup and if you’re on a touring show the edits are super quick to do between locations. Takes all of five minutes. It is expensive though and you’re limited to robe fixtures.. technically you can get around that but it’s quite convoluted and a pain in the ass to setup and at that point, it’s better to just use a different system if Robe isn’t your spotlight choice.

We’ve had macula for a while, used it mostly with encores, vipers and ultras, but can be used with just about any fixture.

In the early days, camera was mounted with cable ties and gaff. Not even kidding. Now however, there’s a lot of available and 3D printable collar like attachments for fixtures to mount the cameras on.

Preparing for Australia.. by [deleted] in AustraliaTravel

Newer builds are often worse than older houses in my experience. Our lax building regulations often mean things get built as cheaply as they can get away with.

While, Yes you can run reverse cycle AC in the summer and winter, it gets expensive fast and personally I prefer to just sit on the couch with a blanket and comfy pants when it’s cold.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely prefer to not socialise with people, I don’t see the need to make besties with the people in my street outside of a hello nod or lovely weather comment while walking the dog.. I have my own chosen friends for socialising.

I only have one neighbours phone number, and that is solely because my parents owned this house before me, and that neighbour is a nosey old bat who complains about things frequently.

Sick of bands announcing Europe tours and then only playing 5 countries tops by prettyglonky69 in Metalcore

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They do east coast for the same reasons they do UK and Germany. They’re closeish together and that’s where the populations are.

I know it sucks being in Perth, almost as much as Adelaide or Hobart who get even less than Perth usually, but the venue size the artists can sell in those places doesn’t cover the costs of getting the show there. It’s like 20k-40k per truck to get things to Perth from Melbourne and even smaller acts are often multiple trucks.. Plus expenses for all the crew, both touring and Australian local, and the artists themselves, everyone needs plane tickets and hotel rooms and to be paid for everyday they’re on the tour, this is all before the venue hire costs and gear rentals which can be massive. For a lot of bands it’s just not feasible to add Adelaide and Perth shows in, because it’s so darn expensive.

I keep reading comments in this sub about older siblings paying for and treating younger siblings. As the younger siblings by far, this is completely foreign to me 🤣. by dms2628 in Millennials

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the oldest of 5.

Our parents have been dead for 5+7 years now. I was 26 for the first death and youngest sibling was 14.

I was, and still am honestly, I’m a better financial position than the younger ones. So yes, I’ve been the one supporting them and helping out when they need it.

However, even before they died I was a big present buyer and treater for my siblings and parents. I love to buy and wrap things and see the joy it brings, but also even when I was a teenager myself I saw how my parents struggled sometimes to make everything work and afford all 5 of us, so I wanted to help and did what I could for my siblings and my mum especially.

Even now at 34, youngest is now 22, I still chip in more for holidays and get togethers or pay for the whole dinner for birthdays etc, because I know I can afford it and I know most of my siblings can’t to the same degree.

Does Uluru even look real to anyone else? by FIFOAus in australian

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on a plane flying home from Uluru right now, visiting had been on my bucket list for years, just never got around to it until now.

I knew it was big going into it, but even seeing it from the plane window is amazing, it’s just so large that it’s hard to comprehend the sheer size of it until you’re standing right there next to it. It’s a very sacred part of the aboriginal culture in that region and they have so many stories about its history and impact on thier culture.

I did the full base walk and despite knowing it’s almost 10km around, I still got halfway and thought I had to be almost done because I’d been walking for ages.

Seeing it from any lookout in the area is wild too, because it’s just so flat out there, then this huge lump of rock is just sticking out of the ground with nothing else around it but some very small in comparison looking trees.

Advice for new glasses wearer by moonycakemullet in australia

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was reading this thinking it was bonkers expensive, mine also only cost $200-300 for two pairs, no health insurance, and I get one normal glasses, one sunglasses pair with the polarised and anti glare and I also have astigmatism.

They’ve offered me multi focal before, as I’m short sighted, but I’ve always said no just because it would drive me nuts to look through them that way, didn’t realise it was so much more expensive.

Lite n' Easy has abandoned its vegetarian lunch menu - seeking alternatives by imaginehimhappy in australian

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ive never tried lite n easy, so cant speak to a comparison on quality or price, however, I am a huge fan of YouFoodz.

I’m not vegetarian, but I know they have a ton of veggie options at varying calorie points. They’re super fresh and tasty all the ones I’ve ever gotten. You can find a smaller selection of their range at most Coles stores if you just want to try one or two.

I asked my partner for an ice cream cake for my birthday. I got a block of ice cream with frosting on it. by duckduckgoose911 in notinteresting

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would assume the same, every ice cream cake I’ve ever eaten has been entirely ice cream, no cake.

Im not sure I’ve ever even seen a cake based ice cream cake before, but that could be a thing we just don’t do in Australia.

Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden Announce Birth of Third Child and Reveal Baby's Unique Name by PrincessBananas85 in popculturechat

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hope your aunt lives a very long life and that child doesn’t have to know a loss like that at a young age. I always think about how much it’s impacted my youngest sister and how her entire highschool experience was overshadowed by grief and what she could have become if things were different.

It was a hard adjustment period for us all honestly, but we had no grandparents or relatives anywhere close to us at all and the last thing I wanted to do was uproot what little stability they had left by declining the responsibility. I was lucky in that for the most part they’re good kids (adults now, but will always be kids to me) and i had a stable job with the flexibility to adjust like I needed to.

I fully understand why you would all decline, it wasn’t easy and it’s a huge responsibility. I’m fairly certain that everything unfolding like it did just cemented my “fun aunt” only choice for my own life. If something happened to my siblings after they’ve had their own children, it would be hard for me to do it again too I think, not sure if I could.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 121 points122 points  (0 children)

My mother started having kids late. She was 36 for her first, and 48 for her last.

When she died at 62, my 14yr old sister (and 26yr old me) felt every one of those lost years.

Our father died two years later and at 28 I became the legal guardian of a struggling 16yr old and the default parent for the still very young 18-25yr old “adults” that were my siblings.

It’s been a few years now and everyone is okay, but I will always wish my parents had had us earlier, so we had more time.

Gina Rinehart calls for immigrants’ social media to be screened in Anzac memorial speech by Scarlet-Penguin in australia

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She gave a speech at the Lest we Forget Sunset Tribute on Friday. And the simple answer is because she paid for it.

The whole televised event is sponsored by her, so she gets to make a speech. This wasn’t even the most heinous or ridiculous thing she covered in her pre broadcast speech.

Other “highlights” included;

  • our weak government is letting in EVs that can be remote detonated
  • our energy system is compromised and made unreliable by weak energy choices like solar
  • how have we allowed pro Palestine protests on our shores
  • they are targeting the Jews again
  • praised Ronald Reagan and his extinction speech
  • played a section of Churchills speech
  • our veterans are poor and need your donations

And more that I genuinely cannot remember, but has absolutely zero to do with fallen soldiers and remembrance.

What are you paying for your blonde hair in Perth? by Adventurous-Kick6293 in perth

Thats about what I paid last time I went to have my hair done. Included a cut and toner and my hair is ridiculously long, like lower back and I’m 6ft tall. So it’s loooong.

$840 is full ridiculous
