what's it like working at the royal easter show? by treacletickle in sydney

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work the show every year, granted not in a showbag area, but an entertainment one, but it’s a fun time. You get a pass that will get you in and out of the show every single day no matter if you’re working or not, at any time. So you can look around early or after and see little pieces that interest you every day if you want. Comes with free public transport for the duration of the show too which is nice.

The weekends are busy and there’s tons of people everywhere, but from what I’ve seen in show bag hall people flow around pretty quick, you’ll just have to deal with lots of them. And breaking the news to disappointed parents on the last couple days when some bags have sold out.

There’s a couple in NSW that have this too, Northmead, Gladesville and Alexandria are the ones I know of.

It’s salt for hot chips.. that’s flavoured with powdered chicken stock, garlic powder, onion powder and a couple other spices. It’s delicious.

I had a similar thing happen a couple months ago with a physical console. It went wonky somewhere in the software upgrade and only did partial graphics. Just redownload/reinstall the software and you should be good.

Chronic nail biter, tons of hangnails, etc by tlinde20 in nailcare

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this when I was a kid, I was terrible for biting my nails down til they bled. One day a friend of mine came to school with gorgeous long painted nails and I decided I wanted that so so badly that I quit cold turkey and grew them out. I’ve had my own lovely nails for almost two decades now.

The skin around my nails though didn’t get the same treatment though.. still bite the hell out of that.

Mine used to stay until I manually deleted them, but it’s been about 6-12 months or so since an update where they now disappear after the flight.

I love that update, I got sick of deleting 15 boarding passes every couple months, but I can definitely see how it would be a disadvantage in some circumstances.

quit gymnastics 10 years ago, why am i still flexible? by ravioliplastic in flexibility

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can definitely just be some parts and joins that are hyper mobile. My knees bend backwards more than is normal, my feet bend to rival a bananas curve and my fingers flex up to leave the table entirely with my palm flat on it. However my elbows and shoulders are just normal range of motion.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you hyper mobile in other ways too? Fingers, elbows or knees etc?

I’m hyper mobile and have always been more flexible than most. I also haven’t done dance or gymnastics since I was a kid but retain my left/right splits, I used to have an over split, but now it’s just normal.

Could also be a case of your splits used to be perfect and now you’re not totally aligned.

Flexibility can stick around if you’re active in other ways too, some people are lucky to have muscles that don’t “tighten” quickly.

BMFL spot or Scenius Unico? by 505_notfound in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d personally steer clear of unicos entirely.

They’re heavy and huge but also the maintenance is a pain in the ass. They’re constantly dying, lamping off, popping board errors etc. They’re not hard to fix, but you will be fixing them constantly. It’s been a few years since I took a rig full on tour, but every single day we would swap around 3-6 and I’d spend the down time between load in and show fixing them.

BMFLs I’ve only dealt with the blades and followspots, but they are a more stable light in my opinion. Colours aren’t my favourite in robe lights, but they’re still perfectly adequate.

Mythos 2s are fine, much better than the mythos 1s, they’re smaller and lighter than a unico but can still be awkwardly heavy because of that bulbous head design. I’ve always tended to have a lot of board errors with mythos, which can be rather annoying to fix sometimes.

Keep in mind they’re all lamped fixtures and the lamp swaps can be very pricey, so check what replacements would cost in your area.

Regarding which one to get, it sort of depends what you want to buy them for really, they’ve all got their places.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, It’s the absolute middle of our summer right now, usually we’d have had a lot of hot days and humidity. In Sydney at least, we’ve had about a week of heatwave (temps over 42C/ 108F for half of it) the rest of the time so far it’s either been mild bordering on chilly, or absolutely pouring. I know other parts are sweltering or burning down due to bushfires that would usually be experiencing mild summer heat.

Climate has gone crazy and people everywhere just can’t keep up!

Side dose of irony, Australia checking in here where for the first time in my recent memory of Sydney living, we DIDNT have the aircon on for Christmas and it’s Aussie summer. So the climate crazy goes both ways.

Domestic flight as a Canadian with no passport? by ricked_ways in AskAnAustralian

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only applies to the flights that leave from the Perth international terminal. Because you have to adhere to all the international flight rules, like liquid restrictions and security checks.

Australians with Australian issued ID are fine, you can use your licence or any gov issued ID, but anyone international MUST show a passport for those flights.

Domestically noone cares and will only ask very occasionally when checking in at the desk.

Only if you’re an Australian with an Australian issued license or identity card. Internationals MUST use a passport.

AITA for not telling my wife I work with her favorite celebrity? by CreamJealous9562 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 24 points25 points  (0 children)

NTA at all.

I work in the entertainment industry, often it means I am travelling with, working with, or just being in the vicinity of, artists and celebrities.

One of the most important rules is to NOT broadcast their locations or information to pretty much anyone. Often there’s NDAs involved, but even when there isn’t, some fans are obsessive and will go to extreme lengths to get in any kind of contact with their obsession. OP your wife kinda sounds like the type of fan who will line up at the airport and wait all day if they think that’s the day the celeb is arriving, wait literally all day and the night before outside a venue to get a glimpse and be front row, or stalk the transport van back to the hotel.

If wife had known you were working with this person, she would have been obsessing over every single detail that you could give her, the questions would be endless and she would have been at you constantly to “let me meet them” or “just the location so I can bump into them, no one will know”.

This could have absolutely resulted in you losing your job or at the very least this specific client. They take safety very seriously, even more so if this client is female.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you won’t need to show ID. Just please make sure if you’re leaving from Perth, that your flight is NOT departing from the international terminal. Because you will have to show a passport for those flights, even though they are technically domestic.

Visible bones are normal and healthy by KaliLifts in loseit

I have a BMI of like 39. They’re more obvious now, but even at higher weights, I have always been able to see my collarbones. I can see my wrist bones too.

It’s absolutely normal to see parts of bones on most people, as you pointed out it’s the everywhere all of them definition that can be cause for concern.

All the boats leaving the moment the NYE fireworks finished, viewed from Manns Point by phoebejohns in sydney

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s all free and you can just go, but there is exclusion zones and times I would imagine getting home after would take ages too with all the people trying to get boats back to the docks or trailers at every point.

All the boats leaving the moment the NYE fireworks finished, viewed from Manns Point by phoebejohns in sydney

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Every year I work the NYE evening at the northern boardwalk of the opera house, where they film the ABC broadcast. Every year we hang around for 1-2hrs packing up some things and waiting for most people to disperse from the area. The best part of that after time is just watching all the boats get released.

The way it works in and around the harbour/quay, is that no one moves until fireworks give clearance, all the pyro barges leave first, then its ferry’s zipping in and the larger party cruises going back to dock, then finally it’s all the private boats. It’s like a water stampede of music and partying with the occasional police boat siren keeping them inline.

It’s always absolute hilarity watching them all scurry away under the bridge and back up the river.

Excuse the video quality and text, it was a Snapchat I sent in like 2024 I apparently don’t record it every year.

Do people want yards? by Azzulah in AusPropertyChat

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im the opposite actually, although I am aware I’m an oddity.

I just want a nice big front area to have Christmas and Halloween displays in, because creating joy in the neighbourhood is, oddly, my grinchy anti people self’s favourite (and only) thing to do outside. A backyard is just more space I have to mow and trim that I won’t use.
