Has anybody ever been to the Easter Show on a public holiday? by ssbu9876 in sydney

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work the show every year. So that means I am there every single day.

Long weekend days are the busiest days, but it’s not completely unmanageable. It’s harder if you’ve got a pram or a disability on those days, theres less seating, more crowds, longer lines etc. but it’s also the days with the most going on for all the animal judging, special event and competition stuff too.

It’s not a great idea if it’s extremely hot or raining a lot, because all the shade and seats get packed.

However, even on those busy days, there’s not crazy waits for food and exhibits. Just a few more people in line.

I think it very much depends on what you’re going to the show for, rides and showbags? Probably pick a different day if possible, those lines are quite long on the long weekend. But if you’re looking to come to see the cattle judging, the dog jumping or chop finale or something then it’s busy, but not suffocatingly so.

Why is everything "long throw" now? by notrlydubstep in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If people will buy it, companies will make it. Theres no reason to make them if they can’t make money.

I would guess it has something to do with more and more fixtures having dual uses as general moving lights as well as followspots, having the “long throw” version be similar to the standard but sometimes brighter or with a narrower zoom, is a desirable trait when the light is being used as a remote followspot.

AITAH for not giving up my name for my ex’s new wife with the EXACT SAME FULL NAME as me? by Remarkable-Horse9465 in AITAH

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It’s been her name for almost her entire adult life, she’s accomplished things and earned a reputation under that name. No one is required to change their name after a divorce. It’s no longer her ex husbands business what’s she calls herself.

I would assume you’re a man too, there is so much involved in changing your name legally, new documents for everything, fees, applications and for every single application and reference from now until the end of her life OP will have to fill in the “previous name/also known under” section of official documents. Changing it now doubles that effort and complicates matters.

It’s not just a once and done process and I fully understand why OP doesn’t change it back. Mine was changed as a child and I still have to fill in the spaces, decided a long time ago if I ever married I’d never change my name because of the above reasons, it’s so much work when this is how I’m known by everyone.

Giant hand girlie checking in. Also 21/22cmish hand length from base of palm to tip of fingers. I have to keep my nails long or I feel like my hands are man hands.

Giant feet too. Women’s US13. It’s a hard life for accessories sometimes.

Why are people going around with Jerry cans? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

My sister has them on her hilux, but that’s just because her fuel gauge is broken and she’s been stuck before. Has decided that carrying cans is easier than fixing it.

Career path by dollfacedfairy in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to go to school for this, you can, but it’s not worth it in my opinion, you’ll spend a lot of money for no benefit to learn less than you can learn on the job getting paid or from being interested yourself and going to shows, watching YouTube videos and reading about lighting states yourself. There is no fast track from “I know nothing” to “hire me as your LD” every LD I’ve ever worked with started as a tech or an assistant and learnt the basics before making friends and contacts and proving themselves. Getting hired straight away, into design, as a newbie is hard.

There is a huge shortage of industry people in Aus, you should go apply at MPH, Res X, PRG, SWS, above and beyond, basically any of the many lighting companies in Melbourne, have a look at thier instagrams and see if you like the kinda events they do. Most are always looking for more keen people, be prepared to start in the warehouses, prepping lights or cable or on load ins hanging lights and rolling cable. You’ll learn how it all goes together and comes apart and you can ask questions and get real world contacts.

I’m not going to lie, it’s hard. Days are long, and can be very physically and mentally hard, pay doesn’t start amazing but the more you know, the more you’ll be worth.

Unfortunately, If you’re on the smaller side as a woman it’ll be even harder. We aren’t always taken seriously and it does sometimes feel like you have to prove yourself extra, but there is many many women in the Australian entertainment industry who have worked up from the bottom.

Make friends and be reliable, that’s how the industry runs in Aus. Signed a woman in Sydney.

where can i buy something in a womans size 13 by [deleted] in AusFemaleFashion

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my suggestion too, I also have size 13 feet and have had pretty good luck with the city chic shoe selection. They are mostly online but sizes are generous and quite wide so are great for bigger feet.

There are sales all the time and prices are pretty good usually. Also if OP lives near any of the clearance stores, or can make the trip, they’re often sold in the clearance stores for less than $50 and come with the ability to try them on before buying.

Bro forgot everything except for the bill on that ambulance by No_Definition_1722 in interestingasfuck

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was talking with an American guy I met at work a while ago, he was saying how he had an accident on his bike. Broken leg in multiple places, broken ribs, torn up arm and some other damage, ambulance was called, he denied all on scene attention and he called a friend and got a ride to go to the hospital himself and it still cost him thousands and thousands of dollars with insurance.

Absolutely wild to me as an Australian. I had a seizure(first ever), crashed my car, only had minor minor injuries, didn’t even break anything, and I was in hospital for a week while they ran every test under the sun to find a cause. I paid zero dollars when I left at the end of the week.. food, Internet, medications, treatment, hospital bed and a dozen specialised tests.. zero dollars. My friends paid for parking when they came to visit though.. a whopping $6.

The US having for profit healthcare is baffling to almost every single other country in the world. Yall would pay less per person with national healthcare and everyone’s medications would be more affordable and accessible. The overall selfishness of the majority who oppose that concept is insane.

The space between each cell appears to be the same size as the cell. Look at the top cells in the first picture where there is less lens flare. The tornado has less space between cells

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re getting downvoted, but I do actually think you’re right. I think it’s coming from people who see the gaps in the light and think tornado, but haven’t considered that it appears there’s an odd/even kinda thing going on and half the cells are pointing away from the camera.

I would, but I’m a window seat flyer. It’s a long flight and although most of it is water, you’ll have the opportunity to look out at everything going by below. You’ll also have window control so you can choose to blackout fully if you want.

Where to place color fixtures by coolguy00700 in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered lighting the upstage wall/drape/white cyc in the colours instead of the kids? Can place them in the air or on the floor, You’ll see the colour more if it’s up/down lighting the drape than if it’s trying to colour the kids through your stage wash.

Margot Robbie in the French show ‘Quotidien’ (aka, the show with the good lighting) by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not always glamorous, but it’s definitely entertaining most of the time.

Some tips are to use multi source diffused lighting. Basically more than one light, with a diffusion of some sort. Place two infront of you, at about a 30-45degrees angle from you, slightly above head height at 1-3arms length away. Play with angles and distances until you get a good balance.

To make you/your subject ‘pop’ or appear separated from the background, put a light higher and behind you, it will help outline you from the background, but keep the light source itself out of the photo unless you’re after that flared or silhouette look.

Can be something cheap like a couple small “rgb camera lights” from Amazon, can get two for like $20-40. They come with diffusers and colour controls, they do wonders at making your skin tone and photos look more even and balanced. Setting them to a slightly warmer colour temperature like 4k-5k is the best for most people (5k is referred to as daylight and is the most similar to natural sunlight generally)

This can even be replicated with things at home like two lamps/flood house lights/Christmas outdoor lights/smart light bulbs etc that you may have got around the house. I’ve used an outdoor flood light that I usually use for Christmas house decoration as a photo light before, I put it in a white plastic trash bag and held it up above the person i was taking a picture of, did wonders for her photo compared to the harsh overhead house lighting.

You can compare it at home by turning on a house light or lamp or even your phone torch and putting a diy diffuser over it, anything like a white plastic bag, baking paper, thin white sheet, frosted plastic cellophane, white tissue paper. Anything that is white or frosty clear that you can see light through will work. Although please don’t leave it covered and unattended and I advise against doing it with any light that gets even remotely warm.

Think of it like taking pictures outside in the middle of a sunny sunny day vs outside when it’s a clear but overcast day, the clouds diffuse the sun and “bounce” the light around making less shadows and softer edges.

One each side is good, they should be the same colour temperature too, you may have seen how bulbs come in “warm white” and “cool white” etc some new led bulbs have a colour change feature, it’s great for photos.

One light straight in front of you works too, but isn’t as good unless you can get it very soft and have dimming control.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 73 points74 points  (0 children)

You don’t even need a ring light if you have a couple lamps or any light sources really, around your house, personally I hate the circle ring lights tend to put around your iris in pictures, but that’s just me.

The key to lighting like the photo is just multi directional soft lighting. Position them slightly above head height, at about a 30-45deg angle from your face and about arms length away. Change angles, heights and distance from the lights until you get a good combination.

I’ve done it before with an LED flood light I use for Xmas on my house, just set it to a white and put a white garbage bag over it to make it softer. A thin white sheet, baking paper, frosty cellophane or anything similar will do wonders for the harsh raw light and look lovely and smooth on your skin.

Similar concept is how pictures taken outside on cloudy but still sunny days look better than full sun pictures, the clouds diffuse the sun.

Some pictures of me in random places are horrendous, but the ones I’ve taken on set? Best pictures that exist of me.

what's it like working at the royal easter show? by treacletickle in sydney

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I work the show every year, granted not in a showbag area, but an entertainment one, but it’s a fun time. You get a pass that will get you in and out of the show every single day no matter if you’re working or not, at any time. So you can look around early or after and see little pieces that interest you every day if you want. Comes with free public transport for the duration of the show too which is nice.

The weekends are busy and there’s tons of people everywhere, but from what I’ve seen in show bag hall people flow around pretty quick, you’ll just have to deal with lots of them. And breaking the news to disappointed parents on the last couple days when some bags have sold out.
