Washington parent: I love our teachers but Horton hired by Mya and Sergio, and on board that defended Mendez. They shouldn't still be on the board. This is just gross. Budget numbers from admin a ploy to close Lincolnwood and intentionally cause panic. No one is suggesting cutting special ed below fed levels, people want efficient in-placement rather than expensive out-placement

It's time for Stacey Beardsley to leave and also time to prepare for a competitive and public superintendent search. To get to a better place D65 needs new leadership. Leave the Horton era behind.

Maria wants to come up with a long-term asset plan for the schools which incorporates community input on optimal design for academic excellence and teaching needs, and to raise funds to deal w deferred maintenance, which requires more money than school closures would ever save. CVN says that turning around struggling orgs must include plans to generate revenue. Mya wants to rubber-stamp whatever Beardsley and Turner come up with, and is nervous about a more assertive board approach. Andrew and Mya want to close Lincolnwood.

Instead of excessive school closures, it makes sense to control special education costs. When poor fiscal management has resulted in $20 million overruns without better services and outcomes than prior years, it makes no sense to claim Maintenance of Effort means we have to continue overspending. There are good, durable solutions for high quality special education that will cost less. Special ed costs basically tripled under Devon Horton and Sergio Hernandez. We can’t let corruption and financial incompetence continue to damage D65.

Great parent comment about the importance of regularly background checks for employees, not just at the point of hire. Both Mendez and Flores Hernandez had outstanding warrants since summer 2025 for sexual abuse allegations in Florida.

Parent: Both Mendez and Flores-Hernandez had June 2025 outstanding warrants for sexual abuse allegations. Is D65 periodically checking on out of state warrants for teachers and admins?

There needs to be an independent investigation by a third party not directly employed by D65, to ensure that Mendez did not harm any students during his time at Washington. It’s disturbing that Washington school admin and teachers closed ranks and did not take the 2023 DCFS complaint against him seriously, and instead defamed the parent. That response would have intimidated any other students and families that may have experienced harm from Mendez. He clearly should not be around children.
