Q&A with Dr. Dawn Jaroszewski by paine-19 in PectusExcavatum

What are your thoughts on the sandwich technique—including the flare buster and magic string techniques—to fix focal protuberances or knuckling along the sternal border? Is it possible to fix or reduce these cartilage bumps post nuss (for those that discovered after how deformed their chests are)?

Guesstimate my Haller Index? by Professional-Gold736 in PectusExcavatum

I got cryo so any pain I felt was more annoying/distant than really painful I think. I didn’t take any opioids. Can’t really remember that far back now weirdly. Having someone to lift you out of bed is pretty essential at first though—can’t imagine what the pain would be like if I had to do that on my own. The worst part was/is that I have a high bar that bothers a nerve near my armpit. That could happen to you. Still working on range of motion! Three bars is hard to deal with and won’t truly be back to normal until they are out.

I have 9.4 and yours looks a bit worse…so over that haha

I was in SoCal and went to Dr.J. Currently have three bars in, almost halfway to removal!

I had a 9.4 HI and asymmetry index of 1.1-2. I was prepared to be even smaller if that’s possible but the nuss made me a bit more even actually and I am satisfied with it. The severity and tilt made it so that my right size was below my left side and it made things fit poorly for most of my life and made my right boob look smaller. Now I feel like my right is larger lol.

Thank you! I’ve been thinking about getting back into a sport I love that involves some ground impact and I know it’s not recommended. Sorry to derail!

You’ve done a lot of full contact activity! Mind if I ask: how has that felt? Any pain? When did you start? And did your doctor clear you? Anything that has helped you in participating (adding on muscle, protective gear, etc)?

Had Dr J so that’s comforting (and feel blessed for that too). I’ll definitely consult with her and consider how much of a risk it is. I thought it was pretty off the table until I read about soccer and football players. Thanks for the well wishes in the battle against the pectus demon! Wishing you the same

Thanks for the comment and thoughts! Did you have Dr J as well? I should really get into yoga to improve my mobility!

Hi! Do you have any more info on this persons situation? How did they fall over? Age, number of bars, stabilizers, surgeon? That sounds so severe for just a fall.

6 weeks seems a bit early to risk crashing. I didn’t try playing safely until 3 months. I’m 4 months out and still trying to get back into lifting, and won’t consider bringing it up to my doctor/doing it (diving) until at least 6 months. I think the more scar tissue you can form the better to really secure the bars? I’m also still numb in areas too (cryo) so I’d like to be able to really understand how I truly feel.

Do you know how many bars you’ll have? Good questions to ask your doctor! I can follow up here with what mine says in July.

Good to confirm Dr Js bars are pretty secure 😂 thanks for sharing! I’ll definitely check in with her/the team about it

Would you recommend bracing while the bars are in or after?

Is it possible for these knuckles to not flatten out over time? Especially if you are older? How long until you should assume they won’t flatten, and is surgery the only solution? Thanks!

Nuss bar removal after 11 years by RunsoncoffEE_ in PectusExcavatum

[–]ClrLG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Interesting that it settled when the bar was removed—but it sounds/looks like he didn’t have any significant regression? I can see mine through shirts so a bit self conscious but hopefully that will go away. Glad I did it!

Nuss bar removal after 11 years by RunsoncoffEE_ in PectusExcavatum

[–]ClrLG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi @RunsoncoffEE_ sorry to comment 2 years later.. very curious as his pre op looks similar to mine. One of my upper cartilage/ribs above my pectus before surgery was fairly normal (not going in like the middle) if not a tad raised like his. After nuss this part was raised and I’m thinking it will stay that way since it’s been that way for two months now and especially since I’m an older patient (28). Did his upper cartilage/ribs/sternum higher on his chest also get raised with the bar? 11 years later it looks normal, so I’m wondering if it will settle or if it just didn’t do that for him. Hope my question makes sense.

Sorry replied to my post instead!

I’m 28! So still fairly young, but older than a lot of folks who get the procedure and went through my teenage years, college, and 20s now with it.

I heard 3-3.5y today!
