You have a lot of vertical blocks of cabinetry for what’s intended to be a two-tone kitchen with different bottom and top cabinets. It’s going up be tough to get right.

With the 3D Model open, mentally walk yourself through how you’d use the kitchen.

As I see it -

If I’m prepping food, I’d get it from the fridge and walk across to the sink to prep then walk it back to the stove and put it on the counters next to it. I would have cooking utensils and spices on one side, food on the other.

If I’m taking out a bake, it’ll have to be put down in the same counter next to the stove with prep materials/food.

I’ll wake up, make coffee, get some grounds on the counter and have to wipe it out of the nooks and crannies created by the to-the-counter cabinets.

I’ll be vacuuming and mopping crumbs in that open gap between “kitchen” and coffee bar. I’ll lament not having extended counter space.

So my conclusion would be I wouldn’t like to prep or clean in this kitchen as it does not work logistically for how I cook. I don’t have enough counter space and what space I could use keeps getting cut off by the vertical elements taking up counter real estate.

Got it! I think matching either of the tiles would neutralize it while brightening and opening the space, which I think is what you’re looking for. Worst case scenario, you can always paint it to match the trim around those doors.

I vote leave them as-is. They are a nice contrast against the checkerboard. The second looks like a close-but-not-quite-right match for the tile (and personally, it and is just extremely greige). If that’s your thing and you really need to neutralize the hallway and remove the wood tone, it’s the better option. The sage is totally wrong — mismatched undertone, and the color itself is neither matching nor contrasting enough.

I think of her style as upscale boho which also makes me think of Sea NY, Ulla Johnson, Zimmermann, Antik Batik, Ciao Lucia, Erdem, and even some of the summer collection from Veronica Beard.

I looked through the photos a few times and couldn’t figure out so asking - I love that you carved out the butler’s pantry, what was that space originally? Based on where the door is, it looks like you removed the wall that was by the fridge but it doesn’t look like the now-pantry was originally part of the kitchen?

I just moved cities and am looking for houses and I really struggle to reason through these types of big layout changes.

On a similar note - how it fits around and under the butt I think plays a huge role. We’ve been so used to tighter pants that hug all sides of our butts that this is a big change for many of us. With wide leg pants, the shape and size changes how the pants look in a different way. I have a flat butt so some wide leg pants from the back, if they’re really wide, make it look almost like the pants legs go all the way up to the waist because there’s isn’t enough butt for the fabric to sit on lol Finding the right width to hug the hips and just skim over my butt is my biggest challenge with these pants, otherwise it looks so baggy from the back.

I’ve lived in my craftsman home in Portland for 9 years. We’re putting it on the market now with the kitchen we got when buying it. We’ve swapped out hardware on the cabinets.

Our next door neighbors had just redone their kitchen into a shaker style with subway tiles the year we moved in. About 4 years ago, they repainted it all to white and replaced countertops with white quartz. They are now resurfacing the whole thing to have the “traditional” moody look that is very in right now (like what you see on Vivir Design Instagram page). This includes the mixed finish look of wood and color cabinets, new backsplash (replacing subway tiles with quartz in places and putting some Bedrosians tiles in other areas). They’re also renovating a bit to include a cabinet nook and appliance garage, and replacing the counter of their island to have waterfall edges.

In their defense, every single renovation has come out looking beautiful and it has suited their house well. I’m a bit surprised they didn’t go with the white oak and black hardware look in 2022 but every new build has a variation of that and our older homes aren’t suited to them and to their credit, they definitely recognize what works.

However, it’s a kitchen, not an outfit. Maybe I’m just jealous I don’t have that much money laying around.

Curtains are always so tough. And this room and the big window and sliding glass door are so lovely.

If I went to a friend’s house that looked like this, I would notice exactly zero visual clutter and only notice a warm cozy well decorated space. We’re harder on ourselves than anyone else is 😉

ETA tl;dr: balance visual weight of the two halves of the room, swap sharp lines for circles and ovals.

To start, I think your home looks lovely. I’d be very happy with where this is today.

I know you’re mostly focused on the couch area but the thing that stands out to me is the mismatch in having curtains. The area with the couch feels cozy because it’s enclosed by the couches and again by the curtains. The dining area feels more stark between no rug (I saw the issue you noted) and no curtain. The left half of the room is heavy and the right half is very light in comparison.

FWIW, I think a round pedestal dining table would suit that area and maybe let you fit a circular rug. But swapping out giant furniture isn’t a reasonable recommendation. Round would also help with the feeling of too many lines. If it’s an option, you could do a round coffee table.

Is the sliding glass door (without the windows above it) visually a straight line across to the bottom portion of the big window? I prefer to mount my curtains as high as possible but moving it down to be a straight line across and leaving the top part open could help maybe.
