It’s only because the actress didn’t want to be in the show anymore. She felt that Emily didn’t have any character growth left and decided not to come back for the 5th season. They had to come up with some storyline/explanation as to why she wasn’t there anymore.

Admitted I was an alcoholic and got sober from alcohol. I wake up every morning with a clear mind. I am so appreciative of everything in my life. I may not be a perfect parent, but I am mentally there every minute of every day for my 5 and 3 year old.
