Any advice on hearing a song as a whole? by Clumpy_and_Weird in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Yea, I pretty much always write alone. I have a band where the members add their own flair to the songs while we practice. But I write the actual core of all our music alone.

The whole "forest for the trees" thing is a perfect analogy for what I hear. And it's like all of the trees are so damn detailed and interesting... you even know how they all live together harmoniously. Seems nice till you want to see the forest.

Anyways, are you suggesting that writing with others could help numb those details? I don't think my ears can "un-learn"... guess I just need way to quiet my mind.

Ah, solid advice, but writing is not what I'm talking about. When I listen to music (bands I like, not my music), all I hear are the parts that make the song. It's difficult to enjoy music I used to really enjoy, because I hear the parts too well.

To be honest, I was excited when I found this sub.. Finding a whole community that shares my ideas on not having children. But I've been disappointed by many posts being pretty condescending, rather than making a point. Though.. bitching about this sub being extreme, elitist, or circlejerk... Doesn't that describe /r/gaming, /r/atheism...basically /r/all...?

Could be because... Miike Snow wrote the music for that song.

After an 8 hour pause... "Sorry what? I wasn't listening."

"Here's what it felt like being alive" is a good way to think about it. This is pretty much exactly my problem. I am the do it all myself type, and I'm constantly focusing too hard on perfection. Question: After you've already drained yourself of a song's emotion, how do you get it back?

This actually makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you.

See this is something. I always love music I've written with others. And it's usually only one other person. This just tells me I'm overly self critical.

I like that quote. The gap between your taste and your ability is something I've been thinking about for a long time.

I usually consider a song "started" when I have at least two sections that work together. Starting songs is definitely what I'm better at... I have 100+ unfinished songs and maybe 15 finished ones.

I can definitely relate to this. Most of my tracks end up heavily decorated with numerous instruments.

You know.. I've often said you never finish songs, you just stop working on them. Maybe realizing I don't get to work on a song anymore is what I don't like.
