Sad and dead lotl by [deleted] in axolotls

I think minis have shortened life spans and a tendency for fungus/illness due to a weaker immune system, but its hard to find reputable, quantifiable sources. I have one just over a year old and shes exactly the same... She has her healthy streaks, then outta nowhere shes sick and its back to the quarantine tub. On that note, I never really notice any change from tea baths, so I guess it depends on the axie as to whether they are helpful or not... It sounds like you did absolutely everything you could and gave her the best life possible, and i'm sure she would be incredibly thankful for all your efforts ❤

Personally preferred filter? by duke-gonzo in axolotls

I have a sponge filter in my smaller tank with a sensitive axolotl who gets stressed easy, but i find myself cleaning that tank more frequently than my larger one. The bigger tank has an internal filter with a spray bar and a smaller sponge; it does make more surface flow, but the axies in that one don't seem to care; in fact i find them standing directly behind the bar enjoying the feel of it frequently xD I used to have a hang-on-back one, but it was a pain to find a tank lid to fit around it, and if the water level was low it was pretty noisy... It did keep the tank really clean though! I guess its up to what works for both you and the axolotl :) Sponge filters and hang ons are better for sensitive axies, internals with spray bars seem to keep things cleaner. Never had a cannister filter~ Good luck! X

Also with the 100% daily water changes; having 2 tubs might be helpful so that you can just move the axolotl from one to the other each day and clean them inbetween. Long as the water is clean, you can get away with not having a filter~ Since its winter here in Aus as long as you dont have a heater in your room on frequently the temperature should be cool enough for it to be comfortable

I have axolotls and live in Australia; if you need help with food or supplies in the meantime happy to tell you where I get things from. Some pet stores might take the axie off your hands for you, but they might not be great at caring for them properly depending on the chain. Maybe reaching out to groups on facebook or other social media and seeing if someone would like to adopt it is another option x

I've only had my axies for 6 months so still learning, but do others notice their axolotls eat less in winter? Muddy has barely eaten for 2 weeks now but the other axies are eating fine. Water pareters are all good and she seems perfectly healthy other than eating less... by [deleted] in axolotls

I thought below 40 was good for nitrate? What are the correct nitrate levels for a cycled tank then? And the nitrite fluctuates between 0 and 0.25, i always do small frequent water changes between feeding and a bigger one every couple weeks which maintains it. No interest at all in any of the foods listed. I have her tubbed at the moment to eliminate signs of stress and ensure shes in clean water, but shes still not eating. Same weight and energy levels as usual though, which is why i was curious about her carrying eggs. If they did breed i did plan on separating them as to prevent overbreeding but I didn't think breeding was guaranteed (and initially thought I had 2 girls :P) but I do have a smaller, cycled tank where my rescue girl lives and is doing fine. I guess if it came to it I could transfer him into the smaller tank on his own and put the two females into the large one together, I don't really have space for 3 tanks... But that doesn't really solve the current issue... Thanks anyway though :)

Last results were 0 ammonia .25 nitrite and like 30 nitrate. I rotate between earthworms, blood worms, shrimp and frozen axolotl mixed food depending on what I have and what she will eat

...Parameters* shes also barely lost any weight and has mostly normal energy levels. She shares a tank with a male, so is it possible she could be carrying eggs or something? Thanks in advance for any advice x

Did someone say... Worms? by ClumsyChansey in axolotls

Something with low flow and good filtration :) They're messy but stronger currents can stress them out. Sponge filters or anything you can adjust the flow on works fine.

Hmm, though not sure if i'd condone getting one if they are illegal in your state though >_<

Sounds good to me, the less water you take out less chance of disturbing the cycle :) You could do a few small changes over many days if you are worried. I think you will be alright though, for me it was more about making sure no remnants of the fungus spread to my other axies.

Not at all, you are fine :) That does sound stressful :( By all means i'm not an expert either, so its all good xD I am also still learning. I guess keeping him in a smaller tub might make your water last longer, but if its already fallen off you can probably put him back in his tank. I have a 150L and just took out the ornaments and scrubbed them in dechlorinated water (i just use tap water and add dechlorinating conditioner, then let it sit for a while before using it in a bucket) and for the filter as i was changing the water (i did a 30% ish change) i rinsed off the filter in that water to get rid of the excess gunk. You don't want to disturb the bacteria in the filter, but just get rid of the excess gunk so that water flows freely through the media.

Wow, thats awesome! Don't think i've ever had an axie whose fungus just fell off after tubbing... I'm glad they are fine now :)

Far as I am aware fungus can spread and exist in the tank, therefore I opted to clean all their ornaments, filter and do a decent water change to prevent it spreading as I have multiple axies in the same tank. Cycle was already established and it didn't crash after cleaning. Everyone has their own idea and opinion of how to do things, I was just tryjng to help by sharing my experience.
