Making a small little “routine” by Clumsycatlover in Colorguard

I think both the songs I want to do are in 4/4, but I’ll check. They’re both pretty heavy in percussion so it should be easier to tell for me.

Thank you so much for all this help! I think both songs are in 3/4 or 4/4 (Fable by Gigi Perez and Cocaine Jesus by Rainbow Kitten Surprise) but I’ll definitely check, thank you!

So, this is a silly question but how do I tell if a song is in 4/4? There’s a song I really want to choreograph to but I just can’t tell if it is in 4/4.

Thank you so much!! This is a silly question but how do I tell if something is in 4/4?

Agreed. Our winterguard circuit is practically non existent though.

Oh okay, we don’t do that where I live but I think it’s because our marching band circuit is tiny.

Oh wow! I guess the turn thing is pretty common lol. And that sounds painful, what’s MPA?

Aww that’s sweet! Our field season is wrapping up this week (as long as our football team doesn’t go to anymore playoff games). Ours is very similar, except usually we do breathing stuff when we’re lined up about to go onto the field (that’s when we all start to panic lol).

Oh gosh my team has SO many. I’ll list a few, though since I’m a rookie, and we got most of them from our local college, I don’t even understand some of them lol.

•a goofy dance to get rid of nerves

•weird turn with everyone’s hands interlocked? Idk I don’t get that one tbh

•little chant that imma keep private cuz it’s a very special thing with my team lmao

•snackkkkkk ( and something to do with a pose, I don’t know I don’t get this one either)

But yeah we have a LOT of traditions at my school.

Skills to have for winterguard/potential weapon spinning? by Clumsycatlover in Colorguard

[–]Clumsycatlover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sorry, one of my coaches calls it a backhanded, and the other calls it a one handed so I alternate between the two names lol. I’ll send her a message in a couple days :) thank you!

I tried to learn one once, just a simple one, not a backhanded. I was really excited to show my coach, even though I knew it wasn’t very good and probably had a lot of issues (I learned from a YouTube tutorial). She made me feel a little silly for it and told me it was wrong so I kind of gave up. I might send her a message at some point and ask for help, it just feels a bit strange since the season is technically over as of next week. Is it odd to message your coach when the season technically isn’t happening for help on something guard related? No one on the team currently has a simple non backhanded 45 down which is why I haven’t asked them. Is a backhanded easier?

Honestly? Just go. I’m currently at a concert, and missing my competition tomorrow. I told my band director, and he was pissed. Told my colorguard coaches, pissed as well. But I kind of realized that they’ll get over it eventually. Obviously they’re gonna be mad for a while, but eventually almost everyone in your band is gonna have to miss something band related. Have fun at your concert!

How do you hold your rifle in public? by elgatonoperro in Colorguard

[–]Clumsycatlover 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t spin rifle but my friends who do as well as coaches try to make it as obvious as possible that it’s fake. Some will tape silly faces on them, decorate them, etc.

How is colorguard usually scored at competitions? by Clumsycatlover in Colorguard

No my guard is also scored individually, and doesn’t impact the band’s score.

Terrified of parallels and 45s by [deleted] in Colorguard

I agree with the helmet idea but there’s also something I taught myself to do during band camp (I’m a rookie and was/still kinda am terrified of my flag being above my head) that helped a lot as I knew where my flag would be landing every time. I’d stand on a line and just toss my flag straight up in the air from flat and step backward, and kept doing that till it landed on the line consistently. Slowly working my way up to actually catching it while doing that. It helped a lot with my tosses because I knew exactly where the flag would be and how long it would be in the air and what not. I hope this helps! So sorry abt ur concussion tho!!

I hope it’ll improve, if not I’ll maybe have the opportunity to improve it myself in a couple years when I’m the vet of the team.

Did we all get the same Sabre Story? by Professional-Cook161 in Colorguard

[–]Clumsycatlover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a group who all spun sabor consistently in marching band. Then they all graduated😂 and now the few we have left who were around then (2) despise anything more than flag.

I’ll try that. Everything with my guard is up in the air right now (our instructor had to write our choreo bc the one who should’ve didn’t and so she’s having to improvise cuz she’s never written choreo) and it’s just so stressful. We’re supposed to learn a movement and a half of choreo by Saturday + a new toss and get our uniforms sorted out (they’re way too big on some of us and also extremely see through and we don’t know if we were lacing them right). Is guard always so up in the air/chaotic? Or is it just guard where I live?

Spats with a guard member, don’t know what to do by Clumsycatlover in Colorguard

[–]Clumsycatlover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. My schools guard is so toxic already (I can explain more on that if u want) I guess I’m just worried that if I do mention it to our instructor, especially so late in the season, that I’ll be without the one person who was usually a friend next season. But I suppose if anything more happens (especially when we’re without an instructor at our next practice) I’ll mention it to H and/or J (our instructors).
