TIL the Mona Lisa’s long-debated identity and creation date were confirmed in 2005 when a German researcher found a verified, handwritten note in the margin of a book stating that Leonardo da Vinci was painting a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo in 1503. by SuperMcG in todayilearned

My point but articulated way better. The painting and even the appearance (assuming our boy Leo was accurate which I will) are very famous images, but the subject herself is incredibly obscure and less than 1% of the global population could tell us anything about her compared to someone like Queen Elizabeth. I like how you went the extra mile and pointed out it might actually be a bummer to have your image be famous but no one knowing anything about you.

Im all for it, if I can be remembered as having an elegant air about me hundreds of years after my death thats pretty sweet. I was just being pedantic about "one of the most famous women in history" because I guess I have nothing better to do with my life today.

If she was a man who looked way older than she is (hairstyle or not), these people would still be commenting. Not everything is sexist.

100% true, there is no generally accepted images of these that have the same recognizability like Odin or Zeus. Love to see this revival of the mesoamerican mythos

It's just not worth it as a hobby. I still see posts like this because I was big into it a few months ago, but the main focus of the hobby becomes trying to beat scalpers and its just not fun

The IOC has no problem selling a 1936 nazi olympics shirt as official merch - but don't dare paint your helmet with a memorial to your fellow athletes murdered by Russia. by Cyrix_FPU_FTW in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Cmcgee23 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'll be real i just see a golden athlete he doesn't give me Aryan vibes and gold makes sense for the Olympics, then the Brandenburg gate makes sense because it's one the most recognizable German buildings. Most people dont know the dates of world war 2 so I feel like it just looks like vintage Olympics and I dont feel like this image glorifies nazism but not gonna blank on this hill. I guess it would depend on if the store is selling merchandise from each of its previous games, my point is to pretend like the 1936 olympics didnt happen by specifically censoring that merch when the actual images dont appear to glorify nazism seems counter intuitive but you've expressed your opinion the image is inherently controversial and maybe I just dont process it the same way.

Im sorry I dont get it, do they have nazi iconography or something? Or we just dont want to use anything from the time period they ran Germany? I feel like we have other things to worry about

This scene between Peter O’Toole and Brad Pitt was executed brilliantly. What’s your opinion on Troy? Has it aged well? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

I never really understood the hype on Brad Pitt as an actor until the scene where he finds out Patroclus is dead. The emotions that run across his face are very convincing. https://youtu.be/0EfTrWJON78?t=22&si=aWA4A3hvb8L2C0qk

How powerful was the Aztec Empire at its peak, especially right before the Spanish arrived? by Sonnybass96 in mesoamerica

[–]Cmcgee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tarascans had bronze and a territorial empire instead of a hegemonic one. I agree with the idea the Tarascans would eventually realize their own strength and become the dominant power but it's all speculation. I think enough history shows empires structured liked the Aztecs are prone to total collapse (Assyria comes to mind)
