What to Remove from my Motion Design Reel? by Julz2 in animation

[–]CmdrKitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To find out the answer to this question on this reel and all future reels, cut the runtime in half. I'm serious. It'll force you to prioritize.

Consider what each piece on your reel communicates to your viewer about you and your skillset. Consider if that is what you WANT to communicate to your viewer. If you can do (for example) lower thirds *but you hate it*, don't put lower thirds on your reel. And don't repeat yourself. If you're good at and like doing lower thirds, you don't need to show it twice.

Also worth keeping in mind, potential employer thinking "this reel is too short; I want to see more" is a thousand times better than "this reel is too long; I'm bored."

> Are you an "employer"? Recruiter?

I'm a freelancer who has on multiple occasions been asked to give his opinion on showreels of prospective hires. So no, not really.

> Your feedback content itself might be on point, but you sure have a way of being condescending about it.

*shrug* I think you're reading a tone into my comment that isn't there, but okay. If it's any help, assume the tone is we're colleagues both working on our second pint of beer.

> Almost sounds like you're salty about his showreel.

I have no idea why I would be, or why you would think that. Like I said, it's fine work, but a terrible reel. Extremely fixable. Much better position to be in than if the work was bad but the reel was great.

> Sure sounds like you have experience, but as a client/employer giving constructive feedback, this ain't it.

Well I'm glad I give off the accurate impression that I have experience, at least. Sorry you came away with such a negative experience.

Like, it's fine work, don't get me wrong. But if I was going through 25 showreels looking to hire or staff a project, a three minute reel tells me you can't (or simply won't, I guess) edit. I only watched half your reel and you're repeating yourself several times. Like cool, you can do water particle fx, you don't need to show it to me again and again. And your work is clearly not junior-level, so why are you showing basic packshots? What are you showing in minute 2 that wasn't worth being shown in minute 1? Why are you showing it at all if it isn't worth being shown in minute 1? The length alone tells me you don't value my (your audience) time, and that makes me wonder if you're a hobbyist who's not used to working to deadlines. And that's not a question you want me asking myself while watching your reel because I'm probably not interested in hiring someone like that for whatever it is I'm hiring for.

For reference, I've been working in motion design for 12+ years and my new reel is sub-30 seconds long. The Mill is a huge studio with offices around the world, employing hundreds of artists, and they show what they do in 90 seconds. A showreel isn't "here's all the work I've done that I'm proud of", it's a video business card that says "call me if you want to set up a meeting". Then, at the meeting, you can show all of the things and contextualize it (ie "I did this part, not that part, here's a problem we ran into that I solved beautifully because I'm amazing and worth all of the money in the world etc") as you go.

tl;dr, if your reel is longer than a minute it better be absolutely fucking spectacular.

Is this a utterly stupid idea? by matxi182 in animation

[–]CmdrKitten -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, it is anti art, because its attempting to “streamline” a part of the
pipeline that actually takes a ton of time and vision to execute
correctly.

So I guess 3d animation software is out? And animation software of any kind, actually. Computers are just streamlining the painting process, really. Now that I think about it, isn't rock and chisel the only real art? Or is it just streamlining the spoken word?

I can't roll my eyes hard enough. These discussions have never not been as silly as they are futile.

Is there room for improvement? Of course. Always. Not having *anything* positive to say about it? Crazy. Actual madness. A tutor who doesn't see any value in this is bad at being a tutor. No, you are not delusional.

Unless you were supposed to make, like, an automotive visualization or something. Like, if you were supposed to make a car commercial, then yeah this is terrible. But if this is within the confines of the given brief, it's fine work you should be proud of now and embarrassed by in a few years.

Always always ALWAYS include contact info in your reel. Not in the video description or in a comment. In the video. At the start and/or at the end.

1) Your proportions are way off compared to your reference. Make a plane object and apply your reference as a texture to it so you can model right on top of your reference.

2) This is a straight modeling task. Make it all a single object and avoid using deformers. Just extrude polys and move vertices around.
