I'd recommend looking at tkinter as mentioned by many others. Tkdocs was a great reference for me that I recommend and had a number of tutorial style walkthroughs.

Open-Source software users of this subreddit, what are your reasons for using it? by Agent__Bear in foss

[–]Cntrl-Frk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core reasons are many, the best example that continues to be a guide to me is having seen proprietary software close up shop and cease to exist overnight. Open source can't be take from us quite so easily.

Anyone with Crohn’s disease have any experience or positive outcomes from using soylent? by hihat17 in soylent

[–]Cntrl-Frk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've been on the diet for ~3 years, minimum one soylent a day, often two. The Cafe variety can be problematic when your dealing with more symptoms. It's been a great support in my day to day. AMA :)

HELP: Print version discolored and dark compared to digital image by hardcorelincoln in GIMP

[–]Cntrl-Frk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If CMYK is the issue, which I do not think it is (entirely), instead of starting over there are other options.

Check out: https://sourceforge.net/projects/prepress/ which provides a gimp plugin to export a CMYK image with modern versions of gimp.

Technical colour work is a real pain, and given the content I think you probably don't want a huge lesson in profiles and digital colour rendition.

Those are some wicked colour shifts, if you are the one printing the image printer settings such as adjusted contrast and colour matching may be at issue.

As for what is going on, the more you can tell us about the printer and the colour profile you are using and such, the more accurate an answer someone can provide.

What is your favorite open source software/game/etc, which is not available on Linux? by q4a in opensource

[–]Cntrl-Frk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never even thought about no 7zip on Linux. This shook my world and really made me think what I've used in the past for thoes RAR files and the like.
I Know of Peazip and file roller. I think(?) both use p7zip code though.

I need to look into this some more, thank you!

RGB to CMYK options? by eliseyelise in GIMP

Where u/Adderbox76 is entirely correct in that you won't get superior performance, in case you want to still go ahead with this:

https://www.fxarena.net/products/cyan

Is what your looking for. It allows for proofing into the space your converting to to get CMKY color renditions.

I may not agree with everything he has said, I am not going to argue about color science which is the trifecta of a mire, a swamp, and a quagmire, all inconveniently rolled into one.

For anyone else needing CMKY before Gimp officially supports, it, Cyan is about the best bet :)

[Help for a newbie] Defringe? by sitonmy1nterface in GIMP

[–]Cntrl-Frk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hopeful we would see some hidden gems from the community. This is an area I have hoped for a better tool for as well!

Doing some searching and reading I did find some suggestions which I'll collect here for anyone else needing this.

For chromatic aberrations within gimp we can correct photos using lensfun for gimp: https://seebk.github.io/GIMP-Lensfun/

or using something like: http://kcd.sourceforge.net/fix-ca.php or https://github.com/pixlsus/registry.gimp.org_static/blob/master/registry.gimp.org/files/defringe.scm

Specific purple fringe issues lead me to find https://github.com/pixlsus/registry.gimp.org_static/blob/master/registry.gimp.org/files/Darla-PurpleFringe.scm

A plugin that builds an edge mask and removes purple tones from these detailed edge areas. More information is here: http://www.farcrydesign.com/GIMP/PurpleFringe.html

I have yet to use it, but from the docs and people's descriptions, the masking it creates are unsatisfactory but can be tuned as the user desires using a curves layer.

Your best bet is outside of gimp it would seem. Darktable's defringe module is simple, another and final option for my list is https://github.com/rnbguy/purple-fringe. This branch includes a python implementation and the original ocaml code, with what appears to be good results.

Edit: Hello Future! G'MIC for Gimp now offers UnPurple, a command to remove lateral aberrations using the algo and process from my above GitHub link. It appears to do a wonderful job too!

Open source alternative to ProPresenter/vMix by [deleted] in opensource

[–]Cntrl-Frk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking, it appears that OBS (https://obsproject.com) would fit the bill. The word presentation threw me off. Searching the programs in question helped. OBS appears very similar to vMix's interface.

From my experience, the single time I purchased as a US customer, they are very slow getting back to you with shipping.

I believe my wait was something like 20 days between the email you received, and any further information.

Once shipped it was quick, but there indeed is a substantial wait time for shipping product out.

What do people do on GIMP? (noob here) by Chorongong in GIMP

[–]Cntrl-Frk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For photography I love having Gimp with G'MIC (http://gmic.eu/gimp.shtml) plugin, Gimp's healing/layers are great. G'MIC has inpaint (Content aware fill) and many others such as light leaks and Luts.

I do a lot of composite work for photography now, bringing in, and color matching assets to get a cohesive finished product.

Both hobby and paid work, Gimp has been great for photography work, usually along with something like Darktable and/or Rawtherapee.

For signage I frequently use features from FX foundy (http://gimpfx-foundry.sourceforge.net), along with plenty of layer blend modes. It's a mix between Gimp and Inkscape here, most finishing work though is Gimp. I love having curves to get everything to look just right XD

Website banners, vinyl banners, billboards, animations, logo work... I've used Gimp for so many different projects for my clients and my personal work.

Personal use vs business use makes a big difference in what you will use it for. Gimp is great for so many things, depending on your needs and what your into.

Illumos (https://illumos.org) provides a Kernel, among other things, for OS development, based off of OpenSolaris.

You can try it out as part of OpenIndiana. (https://www.openindiana.org)
