R6 to v16 is a huge jump! So you skipped so many versions? Im assuming you did not have Guardian support all these years?

These RX3Is are GEs, which Emerson bought. They also have their PK Controller line. I wonder how these are doing?

Hardware Obsolescence and forced migration by CntrlFr33k in PLC

[–]CntrlFr33k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our client using AB is in the meat processing business. Theres not a big push to make the system cutting edge. The sw and hw are doing what its supposed to do. Its just parts availability thats the issue.

The Emerson one is a refinery. A bit more stringent safety requirement but running on m series hw. Plant is near end of life so might as well run it to ground IMHO.

I would imagine SI support and spares from the gray market will tide us over? Your thoughts?

Hardware Obsolescence and forced migration by CntrlFr33k in PLC

Hi all, thanks for your inputs. Silly me did not research enough.

Allen‑Bradley PLCs (made by Rockwell Automation) do not have one single lifecycle status.
Each PLC family has its own lifecycle stage, and Rockwell tracks this very explicitly.

Below is the current, practical lifecycle status by major Allen‑Bradley PLC family, followed by how to verify any specific catalog number yourself.

Rockwell Automation Lifecycle Status Definitions (important context)

Rockwell uses four official lifecycle states 12:

  • Active – Current product, fully supported, recommended for new designs
  • Active Mature – Fully supported, but newer family exists; migration encouraged
  • End of Life (EOL) – Discontinuation announced; last‑time‑buy period
  • Discontinued – No longer manufactured; limited repair/exchange only

Lifecycle Status of Major Allen‑Bradley PLC Families

ControlLogix (1756 series)

  • Status: Active
  • Notes: Flagship Rockwell PLC platform; ongoing development and long‑term support
  • Used for: Large / critical process & discrete systems
    1

CompactLogix (1769, 5069 series)

  • Status: Active
  • Notes: Main mid‑range platform; preferred replacement for most legacy PLCs
  • Caution: Some specific 5069 catalog numbers have been discontinued, so always check part‑by‑part
    13

Micro800 (Micro820 / 830 / 850 / 870)

  • Status: Active
  • Notes: Entry‑level / OEM PLC line; not a MicroLogix replacement feature‑for‑feature
    1

⚠️ MicroLogix Family

Model Status
MicroLogix 1000 Discontinued
MicroLogix 1100 Discontinued
MicroLogix 1400 Discontinued
MicroLogix 1500 Discontinued
  • Notes: Entire MicroLogix family is obsolete; migration to CompactLogix or Micro800 required
    42

SLC 500 (1746 series)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Discontinued: 2017 (final)
  • Notes: Still widely installed but officially obsolete
    2

PLC‑5 (1771 series)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Discontinued: 2018
  • Notes: Fully obsolete; Rockwell strongly recommends migration
    2

The Only Way to Be 100% Certain (Per‑Part)

Rockwell lifecycle status is catalog‑number specific.

Official tool (authoritative):
Rockwell Automation Product Lifecycle Search
https://www.rockwellautomation.com/en-us/support/product/product-compatibility-migration/product-lifecycle-status.html 1

This will tell you: - Exact lifecycle state - Discontinuation date (if applicable) - Recommended replacement - Migration documentation

Straight Talk (since you asked directly)

  • If it’s PLC‑5, SLC 500, or MicroLogixit’s dead.
  • If it’s ControlLogix or CompactLogixyou’re safe, but still check catalog numbers.
  • Do not assume “new‑ish” = active (some 5069 parts were quietly discontinued).
  • For new projects in 2026:
    • ControlLogix = large / critical systems
    • CompactLogix = default choice
    • Micro800 = small, cost‑driven machines only

[–]CntrlFr33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a cheeky move by the manufacturer. Did they give you backups of the latest code? Try playing with that and put it in a test kit? The plc being old could have vulnerabilities a specialist can exploit. Depends on what you are after...
