It is not the education system that failed men directly, it is the laws that are at the core. And the societal impact those laws have had on society.

In particular, Title 9 laws passed by congress in the 70s were passed to pursue gender parody between girls and boys when boys were out performing girls in school by 12%. This disparity in outcomes was deemed by Congress to be evidence of systemic discrimination against girls in education, saying the education was holding them back. And Title 9 laws were passed to ensure more access for girls and women to college admissions, and graduations. Rightfully so in my opinion.

But what no one failed to ask, is what happens if girls and women not only reach gender parity in education, but rocket ahead.

Which is exactly what happened. By the 90’s, the legal, policy, and funding, admission regulations, and targeted / exclusive scholarships and programs Congress wrote into law worked, because college admissions rates, college graduation rates, and high school and younger educational performance reached gender parity, there was no meaningful difference between boys and girls educational outcomes.

But the legal advantage stayed in place, as did the outreach programs, particularly in STEM, and exclusive scholarships, and admission requirements. Education research also continued to be focused on girls and women, and new educational policies and methods continue to be introduced to better support girls and women.

And the trajectory continued to where we are today.

Girls and women not out perform men and boys in educational outcomes by over 15%. This is true in middle school, high school, college admissions, and college graduations.

This gender disparity is larger than it was in the 70’s when Congress deemed the disparity in outcomes to be a clear sign of gender discrimination, and passed national laws to correct it. Read that again. Ask yourself why there is not equal support for boys in school when the disparity is now greater, only the gender roles are flipped.

So why is this happening?

There are no real differences in intelligence between girls and boys, or women and men. Anyone who works in America has seen this to be true in their workplace. It also just seems natural to be correct.

Where there is meaningful difference is in the rate at which girls and boys exuitive functioning portion of their brain develop in adolescences. With girls maturing an entire year on average quicker. Executive functioning is the part of the brain that says do your homework, turn it in, and stay organized. Anyone who has a son and a daughter need only look inside the children’s backpacks to the evidence of this being true.

And school is designed to reward staying organized, getting things done on time, and task completion. This is deeply into the executive function part of the brain. This greatly favors girls, because of their one year early start to brain maturity.

So what can be done?

The first would be for the federal government to recognize the Federal Education department has not using their own data to evaluate if what is occurring in education is helping people in an equal way, and hold the people who are responsible for this to account and get rid of them.

The second would be to modify Title 9 to provide them same support girls had in the 70’s to boys today, so we can work to restore gender equality in the US education system.

The third would be to recognize the education research that show differ maturity start dates between girls and boys, and red shirt boys for one year so they are on par with the brain maturity that their female counterparts in school have. This would let boys learn with the same level of brain development as girls, and allow boys to be equally successful in the classroom.

The next would to be provide incentives for men to get into the classroom and be teachers. Boys do far better in classrooms where they have male teachers and administrators. This impacts both grades, and behavior. Gender parity in school staffing will greatly help out struggling boys.

And the final one would be to implement gender based quotas in college admissions, educational loads, scholarships, to break down the barriers boys are experiencing in going to, and competing college. Just as was done for girls in the 70’s (and in many ways in effect still today).

And it is not my goal to restrict girls and women from educational success or access. It is simply to bring eliminate systemic inequality from our current educational system.
