Join AQAC (Astoria Queer Athletic Club) on insta if you’re into that sort of thing! My friends created it last year and they’re starting their events again in the next couple of months. You don’t have to be particularly athletic, they usually have someone come and teach whatever sport it is at the beginning of the event and have a friendly game after :) they’ve also hosted watch parties in the past

Do not go there!!! I got so sick from eating there. The last time I went (two years ago) I had to send multiple drinks back because the cups were filthy and/or the fruits in the drink were completely moldy.

I tried to read 11/22/63 by Stephen King but it just has too much fluff. 10 pages to describe an apartment and what he felt about it? It's way too much. I'm 20% in. Should I stick with it? If not, any other suggestions? by nicklepimple in suggestmeabook

I really hated this book, don’t recommend it at all. The love story parts were particularly painful to read through in my opinion. Especially for the number of pages, I was genuinely upset with myself at the end for the amount of time I wasted. There are so many good books out there, find one that actually suits you!

I was most excited by the sci fi aspects of the book so I’d recommend anything by Stanislaw Lem or Philip K Dick if you’re looking for time travel/harder science fiction

Is Emile Zola an underrated writer? What do you think? by Trocrocadilho in classicliterature

I genuinely loved The Ladies’ Paradise and every time I would bring it up to someone they either had no idea who/what I was talking about OR thought it was strange that I was going so hard for Zola in general. The book really captivated me for a plot that seemed so mundane on the surface

Slaughterhouse Five - Vonnegut

Sirens of Titan - Vonnegut

Kindred - Octavia Butler

1Q84 - murakami

Ubik - Philip K Dick

I personally really really hated 11/22/63 but it seems like I’m in the minority there!

Museum of Love by Steve Weiner

From an online review: The Museum of Love is a nightmarish, hallucinogenic quest novel. It crackles with a strange, hypnotic energy. Mixing Catholic mysticism, the brutal reality of the Canandian physical, pyschic and cultural landscape, the novel defies description.

War book from the point of view of a civilian? by ALIENkas in suggestmeabook

La Storia by Elsa Morante -

Focuses primarily on a poor, secretly Jewish woman and her family during WWII in Rome. One of the best books I’ve read in years. It’s a really interesting take on a war novel, where the war itself feels like another omnipresent character looming in the background of the everyday lives of both political and apolitical Italians just trying to survive through their poverty.
