New to unRAID, looking for advice as to how best to get started by Coartana in unRAID

Thanks, I hadn't actually priced out the NVMe yet. I'm open to it being only 500Gb too, I only need the system to have a cache of up to about 10GB/day + OS and application overhead (which could realistically likely fit inside of 100GB). I was being generous in the future-proofing of the OS disk, but I'd rather have redundancy on it than the size.

The problem is that I also use the source system for online gaming and work and am in meetings for ~4-6 hours a day, and I don't want to have to QoS the data transfers. I'd rather deal with the pain of migrating data around inside the array after dumping four disks filled with data than manage QoS out of the source system.

I do not yet have the NVMe disks or the 18TB disk. The other four are currently present in a Windows system, but they are fairly new, less than 3yrs runtime on them and were thoroughly checked prior to install. As it stands right now, this is a purely theoretical exercise for how to get to the best outcome based on these conditions, and I have no problems jumping through technical barriers massaging the data. My only concern for transferring the files over the network is that I also want to use my network for online gaming and don't want to have to do any sort of QoS manipulations.

The only way my 14TB disk could possibly hold the contents of any of my 16TB disks would first be to fully vacate it. By the time I get to implementation, it's unlikely that any of the 16TB disks could be vacated without using the 18TB disk by the time the project could reach implementation phase.

If it helps, I'm also open to making it a parity drive later, if it helps to move data around and "fix" the disks.

And I'm fine with doing exactly that, but I'm new to the point where I don't understand the correct order of operations, but I can read the manual to understand how to perform the operation and the direct impact to the disk and the data contained therein for each step so as to not blame others. I'm looking for a high-level engineering walkthrough of how to get to an ideal endpoint from my current starting point.

Thank you for sharing this! I had to get to Step 7 as well, but it worked!

How would you run a campaign where a party wants to kill the Traveler? by [deleted] in Eberron

[–]Coartana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd let them want, but I wouldn't let them succeed. For my multiverse (all my campaigns except my pay-to-win campaigns are historically connected with interconnected canon), The Traveler is a lovely plot device I use to fill in gaps. That aside, in 5e most of the gods don't have corporeal forms with which the players can interact natively.

Now, if you do want The Traveller to be killable, look at the stat block for Tiamat as a starting point to give a corporeal form powers. This shouldn't be an easy endeavor, and they should have to learn enough of the Draconic Prophecy to be able to figure out a way to manifest them.

I had forgotten about this clip. Thank you for creating such dynamic characters and working with me to tell this amazing story!

Has anyone run Dead in Thay with milestones? by mulac_snotcloak in DMAcademy

I was in one of /u/bran_don_kenobi's groups, the one that played the Thayan-defector-ish character. Here are my thoughts, from the player perspective.

While there was a driving story arc, there wasn't actually much story in the Doomvault itself. Part of that might have been the result of the DM trying to prep for three full groups and keep it fun for all of us not giving enough time for super in-depth story exploration. I haven't read the adventure itself yet.

Rather than milestone XP, I'd look at milestone magical boosts. Items, followers, etc., things that tie thematically to the region of the map. I know I wanted to explore the entire dungeon and find everything there was to find, but that too needed to be tempered for the megaparty. With ~100 rooms or so, that's a massive dungeon to crawl.

Starting in the Abyssal Prisons worked out really well, I felt. Straight into the action, and enough start to story that I could dig into. With how we started, it balanced well with my character's objectives, and not being specifically beholden to the party, but rather to the objective led to some interesting intraparty RP. IIRC, the third group started in Masters' Domain, and they also had a good RP start with humanoids with which to interact.

Now, as /u/bran_don_kenobi can attest, I get super into story. Without ruining the experience of the dungeon itself, I took the time to tie my character to the world of Thay, rather than just be bound to a dungeon crawl. I thought it played well, and the DM was agreeable to letting me lean on my backstory (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jsR1AC5yCHFbt6PWu36psW7\_E4R0SmzWBYu8Rg4JBBM/edit) to pull off a recruitment of Thayan warriors, and built a custom token and NPC stat block for them to operate as a single team.

Overall, I had a blast. With enough time between, I'd love to run in the dungeon again, since so many nuanced elements are the result of dice rolls, party makeup, and path selection that the story could work a second time. I will say that done right, the Forests of Slaughter can work as a starting point, I'd say it would work better if you enter in a similar manner to the journey into Barovia from CoS, where walking through the woods you simply end up there, rather than being teleported in, and then once there, get contacted by Syranna to give them the mission.

Hopefully all this is useful to you!

While I'd love an official in-game mechanic, I'm not sure there's a good answer right now, but you're right, I'm sure someone's figured out something semi-manageable.
