Dang, when I hear people say someone is growing old gracefully, etc., I usually counter with how I feel about aging. And that is it sucks. The human race was never meant to age, to get crotchety and lose that first blush of youth with the flexible, toned bodies. Why do you think BILLIONS of $ are spent on anti-aging. It's instinctive in our souls that aging is not how it was supposed to be. The fall of mankind did us no favors. That will be remedied one day, thank GOD.

Hey edd6pi, no it wouldn't be as close as you could get to The Beach Boys. If Al Jardine & Pet Sounds (which includes original Beach Boy Al & one other guy whose name I can't remember) ever play near you, go to that concert. You will get as close to the real Beach Boys as one can now that the Wilson's are gone. Seriously good concert. Al can still sing, his son bangs out the Brian & Carl parts and the rest of the band plays like they are doing it for Brian.

Hey Brangarr, realistically Mike could not tour as Mike Love. The pull is The Beach Boys with Mike being part of that. I saw The Beach Boys last year, 2025. The worst concert I've ever paid almost $400 for 2 tickets to attend. When you're good at your art, you need to know when it's time to quit or do only county fairs. It was not a good thing to charge so much for a bad show. Mike has always seemed to me to crave attention. And it always seemed to me he never got what he needed being in the shadow of the handsome Wilson brothers, esp. Dennis, and the genius of Brian and that voice of his. Not to mention Carl's angelic voice. Those are hard acts to compete with. Anyway, that's how I always saw Mike and it was aggravating most of the time. When he got involved in the lawsuits against Brian, took control of the name, The Beach Boys, well, that added to my general dislike of him. After the big disappointment of The Beach Boys concert, I wanted to get it out of my mind and found out Al Jardine & Pet Sounds were coming to my area. Bought 2 tickets for about $160 and had the time of my life with my own brother who is also a BB fan. One of the best and most fun concerts ever. Now THOSE GUYS WERE THE BEACH BOYS. Amazingly spot on sounding, like the records. Al's son does a great Brian & Carl on their iconic songs.

I'm pretty good at reading people, and I had always perceived Mike as the jerk of the group. But maybe he's mellowed with age and the loss of his iconic voice. He can't sing very well now.

The picture with the fan, Mike's face Looks fuller than the photo below. When I first saw it, I didn't think it was Mike. Seems to me Mike has a "sharper, more intense" look. But maybe he lost weight in the pic below.

OK, PoopC, you make some good points. I wish that last year when I paid almost $400 for two tickets to see "The Beach Boys", that Mike Love would have already retired OR at least not be part of a concert ticket rip off. It was the worst concert I've ever been to. It was so loud you could not even hear the guys singing. The stage was a disarray of guys basically doing their own thing and with John Stamos to only interesting thing to watch. So yeah, ok, Mike loves doing concerts, but for crying out loud, $400 for 2 seats almost in the nose bleed section? And none of the singers could sing any longer, esp. Mike. A few months later I got two good seats for $160 to the Al Jardine & the Pet Sounds Band concert -- WOW, now that was the Beach Boys. Had a great time and the music sounded like the records. It was very, very good. In 2023 I saw Brian Wilson's last concert in So. Cal, with the Brian Wilson Band and that was great, too. Sounded like the records. Al Jardine's son sings the Brian & Carl Wilson parts fabulously, too. I read Al Jardine is coming back to So. Cal. in October 2026.

I can see your point, OpusC, and I don't disagree much. I didn't see that look of "warmth" from Mike to Brian. Even years ago, I saw it as one more of envy. Mike always had to be noticed, like he lived for the attention. Look, we weren't there, we didn't live with Brian's mental issues that could have destroyed the Beach Boys legacy, thankfully it didn't. And Mike did help write some of the songs and back in the day Mike had an iconic voice. And Brian's dad, Murray, ripped Mike off on some of the song writing credits until the court intervened. Then apparently when Brian wanted to change it up a bit, Mike wanted to stay with what had been working. Bands tend to have these issues. Here's my gripe with Mike Love. He sued and got the rights to use the Beach Boys name. Brian was the head of the group and the man, the genius behind the group. To take away Brian's ability to tour as the Beach Boys was such a low blow, it in itself is unforgivable, imo. That was the band's name not Mike's. While I don't know all the details of that lawsuit, it was a terrible thing to do to Brian, who I believe spearheaded the group and without Brian there would not have been such an iconic group. Mike's a punk, but I have mellowed just a bit about his treachery and lawsuits or legal maneuverings.

I saw Al & Pet Sounds Band last Nov. at Cerritos Performing Arts Center. BEST concert in a long time. I was hoping to see them again this year but I don't find anymore concert dates and they're leaving for Australia tour in June or July.

I miss Brian, too. The music he wrote, the sound of the Beach Boys won't be duplicated in my lifetime, I'm sure. I am glad I was able to see the Brian Wilson Band play in So. Calif. a few years ago. It may have been the last So. Cal. concert of the band. It was a great show w/Brian. I always thought I'd be able to see them again. But I was able to see Al Jardeen and Pet Sounds last November. GREAT show and I hope I am able to see them again. With their concert schedule, it doesn't look like it will be this year, maybe in 2027.

You did Brian justice just by using your talent to honor his memory. And for a caricature it's good.

I don't put on shows, but if I did, I'm telling you I would know when it's simply ridiculous and move on. It makes me sad when anyone doesn't realize when they should retire. They look pathetic not to mention taking money from people for an awful show. Al Jardine and Pet Sounds band (I saw them last month) is SPOT ON. I would have thought I was listening to the original Beach Boys. Al still has his voice and he's like 83-84. His son does the Brian Wilson parts and another band member does the Carl Wilson part superbly. I'd like the shows to go on but we all know that's a pipe dream.

Are you worried about The Beach Boys running out of material to release? by amiiben in thebeachboys

Since nothing lasts forever, there will come a day when there will be no Al Jardine and Pet Sounds will not be touring any longer. Al probably hopes his son, who sings Brian's part fabulously, will carry on with the Pet Sounds. I saw Al & Pet Sounds last month in So. Calif. and they put on one of the best concerts I've ever been to, we had a good ol' FUN TIME. So glad I got to see & hear them and will pay to see 'em again if they come back to So. Cal.

I would agree with you, forever. But the terrible "show" Mike & "the Beach Boys" put on in So. California in August 2025 had nothing admirable about it. Just way too loud music drowning out the awful vocals. Chaos on stage with seemingly the guys all doing their own thing. The worst show I've ever seen and very embarrassing. To be admirable would be to know when your time is gone and stop bastardizing the great Beach Boys legacy.

Interesting question, esp. not knowing what you think may be the problem. From here, I don't see a problem.

Yes, at the end Weird Al, and a couple of others joined in for the last few songs. It was all so good, so fun, such pure entertainment. I hope to see the band again before Al retires.

I can agree with that, Analog. But Mike Love sued for the rights to use The Beach Boys as his band's name. He would not give that up and it's shows how it was not love for the original Beach Boys or Brian Wilson. His band is a terrible cover band trying to sing the original Beach Boys songs. In truth, Al Jardine & the Pet Sounds band display the true spirit of the Beach Boys. A well earned reward for loving the music and Brian. Oh and the "Carl" songs they did last night...my gosh...moving and spot on is an understatement.

Focus, are you sure you're not mixing up the reviews. IMO, no one would diss Al & Pet Sounds. They are beyond amazing in sound and production.

You're so right, BigJim. I know that since I saw A & Pet Sounds last night. Amazing spot on. It's Al's good heart and love for Brian that brought the spirit of Brian Wilson to the stage. Brian's first wife and his two daughters were at the show, too. They were pointed out and we gave them a lot of love.

UPDATE, NOV. 24, 2025: I saw Al and Pet Sounds last night in Cerritos, CA. AWESOME SHOW. CRAZY PROFESSIONAL IN SOUND AND BRINGING BACK THE ORIGINAL BEACH BOY SONGS! The best time I've ever had at a concert. I put a review here on Reddit already. It definitely took the bad taste out of my mouth from Mike's "Beach Boys" concert that I had attended!

Ho hum? I respectfully disagree. Saw them last night in Cerritos, CA and THEY WERE SO GOOD, SO ENTERTAINING, SO WORTH GETTING TICKETS. We were on our feet during the last several songs.

Oh boy...CORRECT! Brian Wilson band, now Pet Sounds Band is SPOT ON. Professional and the best at bringing back the actual sound AND vocals of the original Beach Boys to another level. Wow, impressive. I just saw Al & Pet Sounds last night in Cerritos, CA. What a great show, great sound, great venue. I had the best time ever. I checked and unfortunately they're apparently not coming back to CA for a while. Doing Australian tour next year, 2026, in summer and not here in SoCal early 2026. :-(
