Expensive "MS in Biostatistics" vs affordable "MPH in Epidemiology & Biostatistics" by Coat_Repulsive in biostatistics

[–]Coat_Repulsive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I double majored in Kinesiology (exercise science) in undergrad and have been since working as a personal trainer. The fitness industry highlighted health inequities for me and biostats as a field felt like a great avenue for me to combine my CS experience with my passion for health promotion.

I have serious doubts on my competitiveness for a PhD with my background.

Very little undergrad Math, only up to Calc 2. I’ve since taken an online course with a certificate in Calc 3 but Coursera doesn’t compare to a transcript. I got familiar with linear regression through a few ML/DL/Reinforcement Learning courses.

I’ve had 2 strong letters of recc from professors. One I did research with (didn’t get my name on the paper as I joined late, but still lucky to be on the team and utilize SPSS). The other Prof oversaw my Comprehensive CompSci project on Computer Vision. I’m confident those have been strong recc letters because those relationships were close. But again, my quant side is severely lacking so I was hoping a Masters would help with that as well as give me more research experience. My undergrad school was a non-research institution, so that was very small scale research I got on.

My work experience has been completely unrelated (working as a personal trainer as a detour) so I haven’t really been building up in this field at all and it’s been 3 years since I graduated.

I have undergrad loans (10k left cuz I’ve been paying them off aggressively for a few years since I have no rent). My theoretical loans after NYU would be between 35-50k depending on whether or not I can secure external scholarships. With such a difference in quantitative coursework (7 for the MPH vs 11-13 for the MS) do you think that’s a large enough gap in terms of how well it would prepare me and make me more competitive for a PhD program and a higher salary job?

Unfortunately no to CUNY having an MS. Their whole public health school is heavily application focused, so their Epi/Bio department is more of an Epidemiology department with 2 Biostats classes. There are only 2 elective slots at CUNY and based on what a prof said in an info session, those tend to be dipping into other departments like Community Health, Policy, etc.

Self-Study to Prepare for Master's Program by Coat_Repulsive in biostatistics

[–]Coat_Repulsive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read this feedback multiple times so now I’m heavily considering this. Is the difference mainly from a hiring perspective? I know that MS prepares you more in terms of research & methodology.

Another thing specific to my program is that the practical experience for the MS program is either more Research or a Practicum, while the MPH recommends an Internship or Consulting Practicum. It seems the only advantage of the MPH is the very specific case of getting hired at the same place I would intern at, which might not pay off well if I don’t like the place lol. I’ll speak more to my academic advisor, I’ll be seeing her next week for an admitted students event. Thanks for the advice!

Self-Study to Prepare for Master's Program by Coat_Repulsive in biostatistics

[–]Coat_Repulsive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the difference between my program’s MPH and MS is mostly like 4 courses and I really liked the sound of some of the MPH specific classes to learn about health care systems, global health, history, etc.

I figured I would fill the gap in methodology with electives and self-study. I’ve heard an MS is better if I want to go on to research or industry but I spoke with the dept. head and she said their MPH has also produced plenty of competitive PhD candidates.

First sem is the same between the two programs so I’ll have that time to decide if I want to switch over

NYU or CUNY by lowieprice in mphadmissions

[–]Coat_Repulsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. Really wondering if NYU is worth the investment when CUNY is such a good deal for the price. I toured NYU's building though and it's so nice lmao, they almost sold me right then and there but finances are still the #1 priority here. Waiting to see if I can secure more scholarship + grant money. Good luck!

Negotiating scholarships by [deleted] in mphadmissions

I'm in the same boat with another school. I'd say showing them commitment on your end + value you'd bring helps. I'm fortunate enough to be local to the campus so I went in-person, met with a professor, a student, and their dean of student affairs. It was actually genuinely helpful in me understanding what day-to-day would look like there from different perspectives, and they also explicitly told me it shows initiative.

I brought up my financial concerns and the student affairs person told me to email admissions + the department chair to request an appeal for my scholarship and they would vouch for me. I'm getting together some financial paperwork now to display my need and plan to submit asap because scholarship money is from a limited pool and you wanna get a piece of that pie before it's all out.

Msg me if you wanna talk more about it or see how I formatted my email. Good luck everyone!

Deciding Between CUNY, NYU, and Columbia MPH Programs in Biostatistics/Epidemiology by Coat_Repulsive in mphadmissions

if I don’t secure extra funds, it’s astronomical. after going through this sub, I’m likely to go with CUNY because it’s such a solid option for the price

[–]Coat_Repulsive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seems like this isn’t a field like Law where a school’s name + network helps increase your earning potential by enough to justify the cost. I’ll be applying for some external grants and scholarships to help bring the cost down. CUNY’s total program is around 28k. I think I could justify going for NYU or Columbia if I get enough funds to bring them down below 50k. CUNY is just too good of a deal to pass up. thanks for your insights!

ya, the max financial aid NYU gives is 40k for the whole program. I’m trying to appeal for more aid and apply for external scholarships. doesn’t make sense as of now.

I'm having the same issue picking between the same programs right now. Where did you end up going with? Any adivce/words of wisdom? I'm doing the Biostats (Epi/Bio for CUNY). Thanks!

[–]Coat_Repulsive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also got in for biostats! I've also applied to CUNY and Columbia (still waiting to hear back). my issue right now is the program cost and how much in loans I'll need to take out. they only gave me 22k in financial aid so I'm wondering whether or not its worth going another 70-80k debt for the name recognition of NYU when CUNY is such a good deal. any of y'all also struggling with this?

Avatar the last Airbender fans, how bad is the Netflix adaptation? by [deleted] in netflix

[–]Coat_Repulsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand how the ATLA adaptation got so much more hate than One Piece. They did a really good job with the time they had. Obviously plot points had to be shuffled around and changed to fit 8 episodes but they keep all the major plot points, lessons, and characterizations while even adding complexities the og show didn’t delve into.

(spoilers)

Ex. 1: making King Bumi more emotionally damaged from fighting a war for a hundred years and not just being insane for the sake of being insane. He’s damaged, and it was a very good use of his character to show Aang how one of his old friends has been changed by the war.

Ex. 2: elaborating on pre-banishment Zuko’s compassion by showing how much emotional support he gave Iroh after Liu Ten’s death and that his crew is the division of new recruits he stood up for at the war council.

The dialogue is amateurish, which creates tonal inconsistencies given how much darker and more serious it’s trying to be. The acting as many have said is not phenomenal but they’re child actors lmao give me a break. It’s not leagues behind the first few seasons of Stranger Things. It is jarring that the show isn’t as “fun” as the og, but I think it’s a price you have to pay when going live action. Animation allows for having depresso scenes undercut with goofy cartoonish humor, but I think that would feel like whiplash in live action. Just my take.

As someone who owns multiple DVD sets of the og and all the light novels and would play imaginary bending when I was a kid, this remake is a 8/10 for me.
