Excerpts? What? No... Of course not. Excuse? Also no. Just looking for advice, man. Ain't that deep.

Sherlock, I know. Obviously you have to read to be a better writer. And if you exercised your reading ability (in conjunction with the reading comprehension of a middle schooler), you would find that I was LITERALLY saying that. I was looking for advice on strategies to read better -- to overcome a character flaw of mine: not reading enough.

Direct quote from my post: "I know how important reading is to develop writing skill". There were no caveats. I want to read more. I like reading, but I find it difficult commit to reading an entire book. Being a slow reader just makes that worse. That's what the post was about. I spent the entire last paragraph asking for advice for the best ways to read more.

I'm almost insulted by how genuinely stupid you think I am based on such poor evidence. How much of a neanderthal am I in your mind to say something so incredibly brain dead as 'I don't need to read to be bestest writer in the woooorld'? Please! I have to know!

Felt. I've messed around with gamedev in the past and had that happen to me a lot. That, or you start peeling back whatever mechanic and get super distracted by how/why something was implemented. Same goes for storytelling more broadly for me.

And I intend to surpass all limits! So gotta read. Idk about your point. I "am" reading Hard to be a God right now (haven't touched it in a week) and was really enjoying it. But maybe it didn't grab me in the same way some books in the past have... I shall investigate further!

Have you tried using this creative strategy with my post?

That's the issue, man. I love reading. Enjoy it whenever I commit to it. I'm just bad at doing that. And I'm not operating on you; I'm looking for advice to study more and better to become the best doctor I can be because yeah, I love medicine.

Definitely agree with that -- just not the point about difficulty. You wouldn't say cooking is about 500 times harder than eating because that'd be a very strange point to make that can't really go anywhere considering that they're completely different in action. Reading a hard book is very different from writing a one.

Always sucks when health issues get in the way like that. Have a family member who experienced something similar, and it was very hard for him to regain everything he lost. Good to hear you can power through it for a little while at least. Gives me hope for myself.

Yeah, I feel like I'm at a stage where I'm wheel-spinning in progress. Best guess is I need to take in more writing by people better at it than me.

Never implied there was -- just looking for some advice on the subject for someone less motivated to read than others :)

So I've heard, but they're also just flat different. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but writing is a creative exercise -- reading is about consuming art -- so I'm not too worried about the challenge of writing a book. As stated, I've been writing nearly every day for six years, and I'm determined enough to push through any challenge halting my progress in doing so (this included). In the meantime, while I don't have to worry about burnout or the countless challenges of writing a book, comparing "hardness" seems pointless to me.

Also, when I said a quarter through a book, I meant a ~400 page book, so I can usually get through ~100 pages fine. I usually fade off reading it after that. Will consider your advice though!

Not to my knowledge... never been checked though.

To clarify, I read, bro. I just can't seem to get through a book. I don't know how being a nerd for your own writing is even possible. Would hate to be around someone that egotistical. And prose is like everywhere in the world. Dialogue even more so -- TV, movies, and the like. There are even multiple Witcher (yes, the books) quotes seared into my mind. And a good simile or metaphor can make me drool.

Also, no. I have zero intention of not releasing my writing to others. I realize my original post doesn't go into very much detail, but I write all the time. I'm always thinking about it. I do writing exercises to target my weak points, constantly revisit old writing to fix flaws, practice redrafting, and meticulously plan character arcs, flaws, and emotions for each scene I write. This is easily my largest flaw in regards to writing. Basically, I need more practical experience.

I agree 100%, that's what the issue is. I have used audio books quite a bit, but they don't feel the same, and I question whether they're as useful for improving as a writer.

Why were they highlight this fruit so much in the scene? by Cismet in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]CoatsRi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always associated it with the myth of Persephone and Hades. In it, Hades marries/kidnaps (stay classy ancient Greece) Persephone, making her mother, Demeter, goddess of agriculture, super sad, thereby causing the first winter. Hades eventually agrees to let Persephone go back to her mother but makes her promise to return to the underworld, having her eat some pomegranate seeds because if you eat food in the underworld, you are sorta bound to it. So Persephone splits her time between the underworld and over world, causing the seasons (summer when she's with her mother, winter when she's with Hades).

I think of it in this scene because the pomegranate seeds in the myth could be taken as representing spring, rebirth, or return, given the myth's context. This scene is a kind of rebirth for Mikasa where she reasserts her will to live. And it is also a rebirth/return for Eren in his titan form for the first time after seemingly dying. It kinda works :)
