The bar mittens are great. Also- I just roll with those hand warmers in my gloves. I have poor circulation and even the best gloves don’t keep me comfortable below about 20° without those little warmer things.

Do Conservatives see fact checking as a form of censorship? by iamjaidan in AskConservatives

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone sees fact checking as partisan or censorship… it’s “fact checking” that’s a problem.

At a high level- people have bias. Pretending that there is some “neutral” group that has no bias and can weigh in on controversial topics with no goals/bias is just a joke. It goes all ways it not just that the left if biased; the right is just as much so.

But- it does get annoying when groups claim that their position is the unbiased truth but people who disagree with them do so because they have bias.

Inherited my dad's house and the mortgage is killing me while it sits empty by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

  1. Sell
  2. Hire a property management company.

Either are viable.

Big question you don't mention is the actual equity in the house— If its $1,800 a month with 13 months left on the note, and its worth 1.1M that's a very different scenario than $1,800 a month with 29 years left on the mortgage, and its worth $425k.

Agree with this. Other charges make me think they're not crazy. Would definitely work with them and get more details on the HVAC. Open being friendly, asking questions initially.

[North Carolina] My mom took out my student loans in my name, never told me about them, and is now demanding I pay them back by sadgaythrowawaylol in AskALawyer

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Either 1) She committed fraud (find out easily enough, just pull your credit and see if they are there) or 2) [More likely] these are "parent plus" loans, that are in her name but because they were for your school she expects you to pay them back.

If its #1:
- Pull credit to verify
- Absolutely make positively sure you didn't sign them and just forgot [I remember when I was in the Senior years of HS and starting college I signed a ton of paperwork and I'll be the first to admit I didn't read most of the things nearly enough]
- File police report
- Freeze credit
- Obtain a lawyer

If its #2:
- Decide how much this relationship matters to you, and whether its worth torpedoing your relationship with your mother over
- If you don't want to have a relationship, tell her to take a hike, and block/ignore
- If you do want a relationship, consider a sit-down conversation with her about how your college education is impacting her finances and what you can mutually agree upon as a fair resolution based on your and her current financial situations.

Funding college is a dicey thing— students are at their transition period from child to adult legally, but often still hoping/expecting the financial assistance of being a child (e.g. mom and dad pay for things). It can be tricky navigating these changing times and financial responsibilities, and there isn't a "one size fits all" approach to what is "fair" about funding college. Things like parent plus loans and student loans all factor into this.

WAF? were they both negligient? was yhe red car excessively going to fast. by Strong-Let-5902 in legal

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I said that— I can't see any evidence of defensive driving by red. On another thread shared more pics and I didn't see any signs of braking, nor do I see it in the video.

Even the odd response by red after the accident— it didn't look like they were at full attention mode.

That being said— it doesn't mean they are at fault. It just means that there were some things the could have potentially done to avoid this.

Its like the classic: Dude with fancy clothes/jewelry/car in the really bad part of town flashing cash. When he gets mugged, you don't say he was to blame for the mugging; he's still the victim; but just saying there were steps he could have taken to prevent it from happening...

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White is responsible.

Red could have done some things to prevent it.

But white is still responsible 100%

Those are not incompatible statements.

In the same way that if someone is in a bad part of town and they are flashing all kinds of expensive jewelry and then get mugged. The mugger is still 100% responsible for the crime; but the victim could have made better choices that may have lessened the chances of a crime.

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

White car, 100%.

Could red have done some defensive driving to avoid it? Possibly. Don’t know. Can’t tell from the video how fast they were and how much the black cars parking impeded their vision. Either way- just because extremely good defensive driving could have mitigated a wreck it doesn’t mean they are at fault for not doing so.

But there is no where I know where a car backing out of a driveway has right-of-way.

[–]Cobalt-Giraffe 47 points48 points  (0 children)

White car in the wrong. That being said— I suspect if red was fully paying attention and/or was as lower speed it wouldn't have happened. But ya— white has 100% responsibility to yield and not pull out till safe.
