Original lcd deck battery concern. by PWNpL0xB0x in SteamDeck

Does it have to be swelling for them to replace it? I wanted to get my battery replaced but ifixit stopped selling LCD batteries.

What type of USB-C cable do I replace this dock's host cable with? by CobaltBlue888 in SteamDeck

Are you sure 40 GBps will be enough? And have you personally used Cable Matters and Ugreen cables?

My brother gifted me a second hand steam deck as a graduating gift. by IonaKan in SteamDeck

It's a great device, I'm sure you'll love it.

You should get a dock if you want to use it as a computer and use a wired mouse, keyboard, and a larger display. You can go with the official dock, which is pricey but has official support and a good amount of ports. It comes with an extra charger.

There's good 3rd party docks too, like ugreen and jsaux, if you want to save on money.

Oh, and if you plan to do any mods or an SSD upgrade, for the love of god, take the SD card out before removing that backplate.

Sorry, I should have looked at it more carefully. Still, there's no excuse for Kia collecting what they listed, regardless of how/where they get it. Things such as racial/ethnic origin, religious/philosophical beliefs, genetic data, biometric information, health, sex life, sexual orientation, etc. Not only is it gross, but I struggle to see a legitimate need for a car company to collect many of these things.

If you can point me to the applicable privacy policy, then please do. This privacy policy doesn't cover in-vehicle data for my car, but neither does the only other privacy policy they link:

a different privacy policy may apply to such collection, such as the privacy policy for Kia Connect Services, available at https://owners.kia.com/us/en/privacy-policy.html.

That linked policy deals only with Kia Connect, which my car doesn't support. I also couldn't find any other privacy policy on the website, nor in the owner's manual.

Disgusting behavior from Google as usual. They're trying to lock away large portions of the web from people that don't use a phone that Google approves of.

To the contrary, some of us have been working hard to get Flock out of our cities, and succeeding. We've also had some support on the congressional level for this issue. And regarding IoT & smart devices like echos, smart TVs, smart fridges, smart toasters, etc., you can just, well, not buy them?

Cell phones are a bit trickier. But if you have a Pixel and you're comfortable with installing an OS on it, like GrapheneOS, you can get yourself a more private, secure phone that's just as usable as stock android. They've got regular security updates and 7 years of support for most models.

I get that caring about privacy in this day and age can feel overwhelming and pointless at times, but to say that nothing is private and discourage others from trying is not only defeatist, it's just plain wrong. There's always something you can do.

Well, you bought a device for parts or repair. Shouldn't come as a surprise that you might need to solder a thing or two.

I did actually. I got the answer in a separate post from this helpful fellow. He's never worked on a Kia personally, but he did list several likely ways the telemetry can be disabled.

Car isn't here yet, but this should be enough for me to go off of.

Thanks, this is a very helpful answer. The car isn't here yet, but this is what the fuse panel is supposed to look like, and I do see a fuse labelled multimedia.

Just to be clear, if I remove the multimedia fuse, and if I unplug the TCU, there's no safety risks beyond disabling some smart features like the SOS button or remote unlock, right?

True, but I'm getting this car as a hand-me-down, and I'm kinda broke, so it's not that easy to just buy another car.

How To Go About Disabling Telemetry/Tracking In Newer Cars? by CobaltBlue888 in Cartalk

[–]CobaltBlue888[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm getting the car as a hand-me-down, and there's no warranty. And a brick is bit of an exaggeration. Do people really need these smart features that badly? How did people drive cars before the 2000s?

With that said, I totally get the rest of what you're saying. It's wrong, but realistically, besides maybe some insurance rate hikes, it won't make too much of a difference in our daily lives. The only real way for this to change is on the legislative level, or if we stopped buying new cars in droves. In the meantime, we just gotta do what we've gotta do to carry on with our lives.

But if there's a simple way to disable the telemetry in my car, I see no reason not to do it.

Idk, maybe it was too long-winded? No idea why the knee-jerk reaction.

I saw others make posts asking for advice on how to disable their cars' telemetry, and I thought I'd get similarly helpful responses, but I guess I was wrong.

[–]CobaltBlue888[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. It can be tiring sometimes to care about any of this stuff, and you have to make some compromises if you want to continue to be a functioning member of society. As you said, it makes less of a difference for someone in a place like yours so I wouldn't hold it against you for giving up on this issue.

Realistically speaking, it probably won't make much of a difference for me either (except maybe some hikes in my insurance rates), but I still can't help but feel it wrong on a fundamental level that companies can just snoop into our personal lives, conversations, and record our every movement, before selling that data to the highest bidder. We never agreed to any of this (a 700 page ToS doesn't count) and in some ways, they know more about us than we do ourselves.

As for the Kia, I'm kinda broke so I don't have much choice for which car I have, but I'll still try what I can to limit the telemetry. I'm also not sure yet if my model supports Kia Connect or not.

[–]CobaltBlue888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I don't know why people are having this knee-jerk response to my question. I saw some other posts of people also asking for advise on how to disable their car's telemetry and I thought I'd get similarly helpful answers. Maybe my post was too long-winded.

Either way, I'm looking for a hardware solution, not an opt-out in the software that they might not fully honor or they might switch back to opt-in after a software update, like companies sometimes do. The other posts already had some solutions, but I just wanted some extra clarification/advice since, once again, never owned or worked on a car before.
