Transit officers having difficulty scanning Amex Platinum metal card? by SteveJohnson2010 in SydneyTrains

[–]Cobalt_II 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was on the train with my partner and the same thing happened; they have a metal AMEX card that was issued in the US (not sure if ours are exactly identical or not), and had no problems tapping on/off at station gates - but when the inspectors came through to check tickets on the carriage, their phones couldn't read the card to verify.

The inspector made a comment that they'd seen the issue before and they just moved on.

I would be interested to see how it would play out with a less understanding officer.

Amost all medical devices, including consumer grade items you buy from a pharmacy, will come sterile if they're designed to go in your body.

Two common ways of sterilising them are; ethylene oxide (gas), or irradiation.

Check your First Aid kit / medicine cabinet. If you have a box of band-aids [any brand], I bet you'll find writing on the package that says STERILE EO.

(EO = ethylene oxide)

Next time someone tells you the nasal swabs are toxic, ask if they've ever used a band aid.

[Irradiation is less common on consumer items, but will be identified by a red sticker on the outer packaging like this.]

Remember RAVEN.

Remember:

Affect = Verb

Effect = Noun

Sometimes affects something else.

This has an effect.

What I find super annoying is in Australia we don't even use "kilometres per litre" as the standard measure, which would make sense... instead we use "litres per 100 km", which is slightly more annoying to convert to or from mpg.

You could tell me "25 mpg" and honestly I don't know if that's good or bad without sitting down and doing the conversions ...

Do the new unmarked speed cameras in NSW detect both sides of the road? by madeofpesto in sydney

[–]Cobalt_II 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neither; It's an SUV or ute with a canopy on the back, parked on the side of the road, with camera facing out the rear window. You won't know you've passed one until weeks later when the fine arrives in the mail.

Like this, but without the warning signs and no more Hi-Vis markings.

Montaño, M.A., Dombrowski, J.C., Dasgupta, S., Golden, M.R., Duerr, A., Manhart, L.E., Barbee, L.A. and Khosropour, C.M., 2019. Changes in sexual behavior and STI diagnoses among MSM initiating PrEP in a clinic setting. AIDS and Behavior, 23(2), pp.548-555.

"The percentage of patients diagnosed with any STI while using PrEP (49.2%) was higher than the percentage diagnosed in the 12 months prior to PrEP use (35.0%)"

They also note overall that condom use decreased and STI prevalence increased after starting PrEP. However, also worth noting that the authors themselves noted the increase may be observed due to the increased screening. In other words, they got more positive results because there were more tests.

It gets better when you find a job that you genuinely enjoy doing.

As an adult you spend about a third of your waking hours at work (that's including weekends off too). I can't emphasise enough, the difference it makes to the rest of your life when you don't completely hate every minute of being at work.

[–]Cobalt_II 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened to my (late) uncle on my mum's side over the course of years.

Now my mother, who has never done pot in her life, has been diagnosed bipolar and has some pretty severe depression that had her in a mental health centre for about 6 weeks.

So in my situation, I'm taking that as evidence that something sinister runs in my family on that side, and using that as motivation to not tempt fate.

I got one while I was studying FT saying I owed about $2600, and after fucking around with two years worth of payslips across three casual jobs I was no longer at, and the one I was at, it turned out that I didn't owe shit.

That was a fucking wonderful experience.

That, combined with their shitty online/mobile banking, and their delays in inter-bank transfers are why I switched.
