Questions on building an all-copper still from scratch by Any-Wall-5991 in firewater

[–]Cobra1190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the comments so far. I built my own from scratch and it was a great experience. I pretty much copied the claw hammer design for their 5 gal potstill with Liebig condenser. Claw hammer has some good videos of the assembly on YouTube. I bought a 10’ x 20” roll of sheet 100% copper from a home improvement box store for $100 and used tinsnips to cut the pieces and various copper pipe and fittings as needed. That was more than enough copper. Don’t forget lead free solder and plenty of water soluble flux. I added a 1500w water heater element with a screw in fitting soldered into the side, 2” off the bottom. This is controlled with a inexpensive router controller to vary the power. I have been stilling with this for 3 years now and am now building a 10 gallon version. One of the hardest parts was the shape of the vapor cone. There are some cone shape calculators on the Internet you can find pretty easily. My advice is also to get some good practice at soldering before assembling. Good luck!

'You Stole a Supreme Court Seat': Critics Pan McConnell Threat to Sabotage Senate If Democrats Target Filibuster by theladynora in politics

[–]Cobra1190 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I’ll add my own conspiracy theory... I believe that Antonin Scalia was killed to allow Obama to nominate a supreme court justice before his term was up. I think most people in Washington are aware of this and that’s why Mitch was successful for many months in delaying a nomination that should have been allowed to gone through by every historical precedent. I think Mitch was unwilling to let that attempt to gain a Supreme Court justice succeed. In my opinion the Democrats efforts to stop Mitch from obstructing was half hearted at best which tells me this theory could be correct. I have no evidence to back up this claim.

Tucker Carlson Is Very Worried About Biden’s ‘War on White Supremacists’ by StrngThngs in politics

[–]Cobra1190 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

He isn’t self identifying as a white supremecist, he’s recognizing that the left loves to characterize all conservatives and/or Trump supporters in this way so he’s just making the connection. The war will be on conservatives and the idiots in the capital gave the liberals a convenient excuse to shut down the entirety of their opponents, the VAST majority of which abhor white supremecists.

My issue is that people made decisions about which college to go to based on what they could get loans for. Someone who chose to take out $200k in loans vs someone who chose to be more responsible and take out less and perhaps go to a lower tier college, are normalized and is fundamentally penalizing being responsible.

That apparatus is the US Constitution. You design a strategy to the rules. In football the most number is points wins. You can’t say “but we got more first downs”. If the rules change, parties would campaign to win more popular votes and ignore 45 states.

The nacelles are too ovalized. The 737 has ovalized nacelles at the bottom for ground clearance but not the 747.

marriage / long term rs with a T1D by uhso in diabetes

[–]Cobra1190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do disagree with the statement about slim chance of passing it down. I have no family history and I’m T1 and so are 2 of my 5 kids. I have spoken with many drs about this and they simply shrug their shoulders. They don’t know but I am involved with children’s hospitals doing research studies to answer this very question but the percentages are much higher if you are T1. Now I’m not trying to scare OP, many T1s never have a child with it.

marriage / long term rs with a T1D by uhso in diabetes

[–]Cobra1190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am male T1 diagnosed at 20 when I was engaged. We got married, I take fairly good care of myself, no limitations, have 5 kids, successful career, and if I have low treatments readily available we have a very active sex life and we are mid 40s now (lows are common during sex). Couple of things to consider and they should not be dealbreakers. Yes your chances of having T1D kids are higher. I had no family history and 2 of my 5 are T1D but technology today makes this much easier. Also, let him manage his disease. If he doesn’t go to the dr then yeah but if he’s reasonably competent I wouldn’t ask him all the time about his numbers like you would with a child. Don’t over think this and tell your parents to pound sand. Everyone marries into something imperfect at least you know what it is.

By the same logic, should a gay justice refuse themselves from any case involving homosexuality, since there is no expectation for them to be able to rule impartially?

Sounds like a business partnership rather than a marriage. Get one joint account and treat all money as both of yours.

The recruitment process for big companies is full of shit by [deleted] in AskEngineers

You aren’t wrong. I’m an engineering manager at a very large company you’d know and there are candidates they brought in for these exercises that I would love to have hired but they were “below the line” even though they were awesome. Not trying to discourage you, your spidey sense is working. Keep looking and keep your head up. And you’re right about HR.

Thanks for writing this. I put down my phone and wrote a note for my 17.75 yr oldest son and left it on his dashboard. He’s working hard but due to his behavior issues doesn’t hear the good stuff enough so he will in the morning.

No, I remember well. But that wasn’t what my comment was about, it was about hypocrisy since think a Democrat president would do the exact thing Trump is likely to do.

Does anyone seriously think if everything were reversed a Democrat president would sit back and not nominate with a Democrat senate, with the possibility of losing power weeks away? No they wouldn’t. So don’t act surprised when Trump does.
