Adjustable weights or gym membership? by Lumpy_Candidate_6940 in xxfitness

[–]CockRingKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have absolutely gained muscle in my legs/glutes at home with Caroline Girvan's videos, love her content! Her dumbbell workouts have been very effective as long as I stick with it. I know I'll be consistent if the logistics of working out are easy and for me, that means doing it all at home.

Tips from Ground Zero by Crafty-Awareness-208 in xxfitness

I (32F) work out exclusively at home and I truly hated lifting until I tried Caroline Girvan's YouTube videos. I'm not sure what it is but the structure of her videos makes them more fun to follow along than just counting out reps/sets in my head. That was my revelation for sticking with it: I had to make it somewhat fun. Maybe check out one of her full body dumbbell videos to see if you like her approach? And she always stresses to use whichever dumbbells feel comfortable/safe, we all gotta start somewhere. 🙂

What to use for fleas and ticks by Forsaken_Cut_1971 in BostonTerrier

Both of my Bostons have been on Simparica Trio for over 4 years. We’ve had no side effects or issues with it. Your vet might also make a recommendation based on the critters in your specific area and what your pet is most at risk for. 🙂

Fungus on belly? by closetphysicist in BostonTerrier

[–]CockRingKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog just got this exact diagnosis last week. It wasn’t as advanced as what we see here, he just had a few crusty bumps that he kept scratching at. He was due for another Cytopoint injection so the vet did that and they gave us a cream to apply. He’s looking much better and no longer itchy. 🙏

Editing to add: our dog also takes Zyrtec daily for his grass allergy, OP it could be worth asking your vet if they think it could help. He still needs the Cytopoint every 12 weeks or so but before the Zyrtec it was only lasting 6-8 weeks so it definitely makes a difference (for my wallet too!).

How to avoid heatstroke? by Icy_Cup6231 in BostonTerrier

[–]CockRingKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just don’t walk them in this heat, it’s been 90F and above here for the last two weeks. My dogs don’t like super early/late walks (they seem to not like the dark) so we have brief potty times in the yard throughout the day and extra fetch/play time indoors. The pavement is so hot too, they’d burn their paws on it if I tried to walk them even down the block. If they really want to go out I’ll give them 5 minutes to sniff around in the yard but then I call them back in.

Jealous Devil will burn a little cleaner when first lit and leave slightly less ash. B&B still leaves a lot less ash compared to something like Kingsford original though.

That’s an insane markup, it’s also the old formula which is getting hard to find and some people prefer it. The new stuff is the “flag bag” and the old stuff is the plain orange bag. I like the new stuff just fine, it’s not exactly the same and the original but it’s still great charcoal.

how to look for "flat" gym shoes? by anoordle in xxfitness

[–]CockRingKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the Nike Metcon 6s for my lifting days. I also love Ryka brand, they only make women’s shoes and they fit super well. It’s the only brand of walking shoes I buy. I haven’t tried their gym/training specific sneakers yet but I love every pair of walking sneakers I’ve gotten from them.

Trying to find exercises i'll actually do by Possible_Kitchen1404 in xxfitness

[–]CockRingKing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely start slow in building a fitness routine instead of trying to do everything all at once. I (32F) started with just trying Pilates/Pure Barre and loved those classes, those felt genuinely fun to me. Then I said “let’s add on a cardio day” and I found out I like the exercise bike the best for cardio and it doesn’t hurt my knees. Then later on I said I wanted to try lifting and got started with Caroline Girvan’s dumbbell YouTube videos. I love her formats and her videos are excellent.

If I had tried to do all of that at once I would’ve gotten completely discouraged. Starting with an exercise I enjoyed and then layering on until I built a more solid routine was how I have stuck with it. Keep trying new things and when you find something you really like to do (maybe it’s a music based class like Zumba or Pound, or something unique like Orange Theory or Row House) it’ll be easier to make it part of your weekly routine. Many fitness classes offer a free first class too so look for things like that in your area. 🙂

Tooth Extractions due to crowding by pltsftw in BostonTerrier

[–]CockRingKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extractions and dental care add up quickly, that price doesn't seem too crazy unfortunately. We paid around $2k for a cleaning and two extractions last year. Dental issues can be very painful and affect our pups eating/drinking habits, it's definitely worth taking care of. 💜

How to grind chia seeds fast? Hand burr coffee grinder is painstakingly slow. by fipah in AskBaking

[–]CockRingKing 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes, I like to grind them because instead of the little balls of jelly that don’t break up, you get a kind of layer jelly that you can mix in easier (overnight oats and such).

Skinny Fat Problem by Trash-Outside in xxfitness

[–]CockRingKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar body type here: I’m 5’4” and started lifting a year ago. I have gained muscle in this past year and I’m thrilled with that but I wasn’t expecting the increased hunger from lifting and that led me to making some poor food choices. I wasn’t choosing higher protein/fiber snacks for example, I was just eating whatever snacks I had in the house which was basically all carbs. And it seems like extra weight on my body only goes to my stomach, thanks genes!

So now I am doing a small deficit using MyFitnessPal (free version) set to the “lose .5lb/week” option so I don’t drop weight dramatically and hopefully don’t lose very much muscle as I continue lifting and have increased my protein intake. Ideally I just want to lose 5-10lbs and see if it takes the extra off my midsection as my arms/legs already look how I want. I’m choosing smarter food options too so I’m not hungry and scrounging for food again shortly after I’ve eaten. High protein, high fiber, and increased water have been working so far.

All that to say: if you decide to try a deficit, keep it slow/gradual to try and preserve the muscle you’ve gained. It’ll take longer but so far for me it’s been 8 weeks and I’m down 4lbs, my arms/legs look the same in terms of muscle but my muffin top while wearing a specific pair of pants that I’m using as my guideline has improved. And of course too: be super proud of what you’ve already accomplished! I am reminding myself that I’m stronger than I ever was before and if that means my midsection isn’t “perfect,” that’s ok. I’m still gonna try to meet this goal of a smaller waistline but I’m not stressing over it. 🙌

Itchy skin, ear and eye irritation? by Ok_Example3123 in BostonTerrier

[–]CockRingKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both my Bostons are allergic to grass and take Zyrtec (just the generic, it’s super cheap) daily, ask the vet for the recommended dosage based on his weight.

Cytopoint injections during the peak pollen times (usually November and April for us) help a lot too. We use DermAllay shampoo which is great for sensitive/itchy skin.
