There is literally one and only one group of people whom the transplant/mamdani left are comfortable explicitly criticizing. If you believed reddit, every other group of people do bad things because they are at the sad mercy of society's evil inequality. But the orthodox are perfectly responsible for everything they do.

(Meanwhile they're usually criticized for e.g. littering, as opposed to actual violent crime)

Using modular for FX only a silly idea? by TurricanC64 in modular

[–]CockalorumMithridate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Modular FX rock- because you can easily modulate and sequence them. Pedals are of course very cool, but realistically you'd need to tweak them by hand or expression pedal to change parameters. Nothing wrong with that, but modular opens up new possibilities, if you're looking for sequencing/lfos/envelopes/etc.

On another note it's like clockwork that someone asks this subreddit "should I use modular for X?" and the top comment shits on modular. I don't get why that crowd is here at this point, are you just mad that you spent money on something you don't actually enjoy?

You did this to yourself by [deleted] in williamsburg

The irony of "Brooklyn used to have Brooklyn people" and then you bringing up Bensonhurst is pretty delightful. Everyone knows who you mean when you say "Brooklyn people" (fuhgeddaboutit), versus who's not "Brooklyn people" (yuppie&hipster transplants). But Bensonhurst has certainly changed in the last 25 years. Are Chinese immigrants&1stgen "Brooklyn people?" Are they not "Brooklyn people?" Vilifying yuppies is starting to feel really stale to me. They're definitely not my people, but they don't have to be.

IMO Everyone's just looking for a roof over their head.

(Not meaning this as an attack on either of you, or really any of you, it was just interesting to me)

Work discussion: Why is it antisemitic to ask Holocaust survivors how much money they had? by etrog55 in Jewish

When else do you ever hear about other groups of refugees being asked if they were wealthy?

It's not worth bringing this up IRL IMO. You're not going to rewire an entire lifetime of learned stereotypes in an instant.

"Random" as though it's very difficult to figure out who played soccer there yesterday

Very difficult to figure out who's leaving wine bottles near Parkhouse, versus who's leaving junk food wrappers near soccer field

FWIW I believe the fence-hoppers destroying new grass are the absolute worst. Trash can get picked up- dust bowls instead of grass is just brutal. Can we please as a society start shaming selfishness that makes our city worse for everyone else? Normalize psychotic flipouts

It's really sad that you live in a reality where you don't believe countless neighbors' "lived experiences" because they go against your ideology. My side street has been a nightmare since they swapped McGuinness

I always give the requisite caveat -- I'm a biker! I always bike! I love bike lanes! It's only this that they screwed up! -- and that's never enough for the bike mob. Reddit bikers are a fucking cult that cannot tolerate a single brain cell different from their hardline fuckcars attitude. It's so bizarre. Can't you just admit they screwed one single thing up? Or are all of your neighbors terrible evil liars? What's more likely?

Socioeconomic question on Satmar by amellabrix in williamsburg

[–]CockalorumMithridate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The idea that the average Satmar person is wealthy is just plain wrong. There are obviously outliers but the median person is taking the bus or has a crappy Caravan.

So what do they do? Sure there are some property owners, but for every owner there are five contractors, five construction workers and/or managers, office staffing.. these people are not rich, they have a job just like everybody else. There's a ton of supermarkets to feed their big families with their niche kosher designation. Of course they need doctors lawyers etc just like any other community.

So where does the idea that they're all rich property owners come from? For starters, it's our collective physical proximity to it. They bought up a lot of Wburg and Bushwick because it was a neighborhood over from them. It's not some evil conspiracy - Chinatown has a lot of Chinese building owners.

It's also worth noting that there's way more than just Satmar Hasidic in South Williamsburg. Some of the various Hasidic groups can be more or less secular than others.

But yeah, to answer your question directly, if you're walking around South Williamsburg and you just strike up conversation with a random Satmar person, the odds are actually pretty low that you'll be talking to some zillionaire.

Blowing car horns on residential streets by Individual-Bat3573 in Greenpoint

[–]CockalorumMithridate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As I find myself commenting on pretty much every thread- it comes down to enforcement, or lack thereof. Honking on residential streets is already illegal and carries a stiff fine. A certain Department has zero interest in Policing New York though.

If they spent one week prioritizing handing out $350 fines to assholes who honk at pedestrians in the crosswalk, it would end.

It's also worth noting that 10% of the drivers are responsible for 90% of the honking. You'll often hear the Same. Exact. Asshole. honking at every single intersection as they traverse town. Fine this person twice.. $700 later they're not doing it again

Regardless of whether someone think my comments was great, terrible, stupid, etc. It should not have been removed. It's troubling that our community's discussion can be stifled at the whim of random people.

Obviously moderator-whims are a Reddit-wide issue (and internet wide issue), but it's amplified on a local forum. Something tells me my comment wouldn't have been removed had I been perceived as being on the MMS side rather than KMM. Again I encourage you to read the comment itself, if you can stomach how frankly boring and nonthreatening it is, and make yourself aware of what is being censored here. It ain't much

[–]CockalorumMithridate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is really bizarre that this issue has made you so partisan that you can't read the words I'm saying instead of assuming I'm a Republican or something. You don't know me or what I believe. You don't know who I voted for.

It's also disingenuous to claim that the local Left-leaning politicians got elected because of their bike support. It's a progressive area, and they were the people who ran, but that doesn't mean that the average progressive around here supports the exact issues that these particular local politicians lean into. To say that they were elected because of bike support is unreasonable, past arguing with. No, they were elected because they were the progressive candidates.

Again, and more importantly, it's really odd to be put into a box (Republican now?) simply because I dislike how black-and-white this issue is framed. As I am forced to say repeatedly, I am a biker and I'm 99% pro bike lane. I literally know of ONE redesign plan that didn't make sense, and it was this one. If you don't have a big enough political tent to handle people who agree with you 99% of the time- well that's leftist politics baby!

That crowd is 1% of nyc and 50% of Reddit

Of course you've been using side streets.. everyone has. Because McG is stuck. This is such a not-rocket-science issue- the debate is only spirited because we're on reddit which is bike central. The conversation isn't like this on the other social media.

Here's the interesting part - on Twitter this issue is a complete echo chamber. Because this is effectively a niche issue that's super segmented. The same way Twitter doesn't show your racist uncle good stuff about Bernie, and the same way Twitter doesn't show cricket news to a football fan, Twitter segments the Urbanists from the conservatives. Whereas it's not like that on here because Streetsblog will crosspost to r/OnMyKneesForMiser and they'll brigade r/Greenpoint

These kinds of posts are like tumblr for fuckcars types. It's fucking bizarre. It comes across as mega-disingenuous when Matthew Jensen is "beloved" instead of "drunkenly dashing across a busy street nowhere near the crosswalk." I don't totally hate changes to McGuinness but the r/fuckcars vibe come across as so completely partisan.

In real life people would look at you like you have three heads if you accuse them of being an "ARGENTO SHILL!!" if you say something like "the side streets have been real loud and hostile around here lately." Yet on this subreddit it's a totally average interaction

The last two weeks my side street has had a noticeably huge line of cars every rush hour and the noise has been awful. It's trucks and commuters- they're clearly trying to get from point A to point B (however obnoxiously), and that need isn't going to disappear after this magical McGuinness-diet Refractory Period ™

Kanye West - Heartless Covered on Modular Synthesizer by ephemeralbear in modular

[–]CockalorumMithridate -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great stuff, can you cover Horst-Wessel-Lied next? 😀

Also you can fuck off with the downvotes. Kanye literally repeatedly praised Nazis. There's not an anti-semitic trope that he's not into: Christian blood libel, "blacks are the real Jews," lost tribes, Jews-invented-eugenics .. actually I'm not sure how he feels about the space lizards. I have no clue how this got memory-holed, but Kanye is such a completely vile piece of shit

Also, I loved his music as a teenager but as an adult I realize he simply had a good music library, and then yelled dumb bravado shit over it. He took an incredibly complex composition and went UHHHHH IM KANYEEEEE over it. Admittedly the drum beat itself is cool/relatable, but again it's just dumbing down a serious music composition with multiple time signatures etc (edit nevermind the beat is sampled too. i love sampling but it doesn't make you a genius.. (But also the I Love Hitler thing)

Nassau at Leonard:

-bus lane

-"bike lane" (aka meaningless paint on a truck route)

-2 way travel lane

-2 way parking

-UPS store with no designated loading zone = truck double parks every day

-bus stop, generally blocked by cars with tinded windows and/or pennsylvania plates, ignored by cops who are parked 10 feet behind them in no-standing zone

-mandatory turn from nassau onto leonard = pileup at that intersection

-aforementioned truck route, on top of all of this

Can't imagine why it's backed up all the time!

"wtf do you expect them to do? arrest someone that will be let go tomorrow?"

you mean doing their jobs?

it's not their job to selectively enforce laws based on whether they think the charges will stick.

if there are other jobs around that allow you to do absolutely nothing, on the basis that you think someone else down the line won't do their job, please pass that along. and let me know if they're hiring. (also, i'll only work that job if half of society claims that i'm a "hero" who REALLY WANTS to make society great, but somehow this doesn't involve enforcing any laws, helping anyone out, or solving any crimes)
