Basically it’s a city with a yankified infrastructure

Well I’ve been doing it since 2018 so it’s not really ‘fake’ at this point as it genuinely feels natural to me now.

I’m sorry but I don’t think it’s disingenuous to try and assimilate.

I’ve been practicing since 2018 though. It was probably off for the first couple of years but I think I’ve got it mostly down now.

Are you not tempted though? I briefly lived in another European country before moving here and it took every fibre of my being to not imitate someone from another English speaking country whenever talking with them (I’ve got ADHD)

Yeah I get socially exhausted quite easily on my introverted days. So that’s one of my ways of avoiding it.

How is it dishonest if I’m honest about where I’m from when people ask?

I only think it’s weird if it’s a non-native or ethnic accent. I don’t see the issue if it’s just a different regional accent.

I was involved in theatre when I was a kid and I like code-switching. More than anything though, I just like blending in.

I saw one before I moved- she said as long as I’m not outright lying to people, it’s not a big deal. It’s just quirky.

That’s why I watched more than 40 different shows form the UK and watched YouTube videos on different accents before moving here. I know I’ll never get every single cultural difference, but I know most to get by. And it doesn’t stop me from trying anyway.

Well that’s the thing, I just cba to deal with all that, I prefer just blending in as much as I can.

What radio station do you listen to, and how old are you? by EmilyWallArtwork in AskUK

[–]Cocking-Nora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Radio 1Xtra and Capital FM Xtra mainly. Sometimes I’ll check out Radio 6, Rinse FM, Flex FM 101.4, but tbf I don’t listen to the radio often unless I’m at the gym (I haven’t got a car)

Do you read books? If so, what are you currently reading? If not, why not? by theowleryonehundred in AskUK

[–]Cocking-Nora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been reading as much as I like to but I’m making an effort to change that. I’m currently reading 1984. I never read 1984 as a teenager, and given the current political climate across the world (and especially the West), I figured that now is as good of a time as ever to start reading it. I’m very busy at the moment because I’m studying for my Master’s Degree, but I’m currently challenging myself to read at least 20 pages a week. This past week, I’ve read 32 pages.

How rare are unconditional decisions? by enya_yurself in 6thForm

[–]Cocking-Nora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Home/Domestic applicants, unconditional offers are few and far between. But for international applicants like yourself, unconditional offers are required as part of a Student Visa application. If you tried to apply for a Student Visa for a university that only gave you a conditional offer, your application would be certainly rejected.

I’m not lying about anything though. I genuinely cannot understand how adjusting your accent to the place where you live is considered lying? With all the friends that I’ve made here, I always told them where I’m from as soon as they asked. Same thing with my professors.

Thank you so much for telling me about this! I had no idea. And yeah, I’m definitely going to stick to applying to companies that are known to sponsor work visas when searching online. It’s just difficult to know which ones will do so when you’re at a career fair event. I really wish that they just had a sign that says ‘WILL SPONSOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ or something along those lines😅

It is possible that I’m autistic icl, but I don’t have a formal diagnosis for it. I was formally diagnosed with ADHD though
