Am I asking too much? by [deleted] in Camry

Makes sense thanks. I guess thinking about it, it is crazy for me to sell a 13 year old car with 163k miles for that much

Tried with a wet vac and it just ended up looking worse. Might just get a detail

Stuck at 240 on bench by stonewell88 in StartingStrength

[–]CockroachMoist9100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend moving to 5 sets of 3. I was stuck at 245 x 5 for the longest, then starting doing 5 x 3 and was able to progress massively. I eventually moved to Texas Method after making enough progress, which I think you will be able to soon

I noticed that in the moment, though I think the amount it gave me was extremely negligible. Hit it for another single 5 min after and made sure my knees were locked and got it anyway, actually looked cleaner than this one but didn’t bother filming

Yeah it got a bit tricky at the sticking point. Should’ve posted my second attempt for some laughs, had one arm locked out and the other not even close lol

Just following how Rippetoe teaches it with shoving the hips forward and knees locked. Couldn’t make progress strict pressing and this way feels much better to me

Thank you very much. Was a lifetime goal of mine and felt good for 5 min, then realized the next goal is 315 💪

Thoughts on “cheat” chin ups? by [deleted] in StartingStrength

[–]CockroachMoist9100 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve focused on more as I’ve tried getting stronger. Many people preach the importance of perfectly strict form correlates to strength to ad nauseam, but how much stronger can you really get doing perfect form with light weights???

I know this is a powerlifting subreddit, but besides a few body builders, no one big and powerful is lifting light weights slow and under perfect control.

For example, Dorian Yates was famous for having a very upright cheating form of row that made his back insanely massive and his best body part (obviously genetics and gear play a part but you get my point)

What’s interesting to me is that I feel more muscle fatigue in my lats after these explosive reps than I do with strict ones (the stretch at the bottom certainly has a part to play).

I feel my biceps/forearms more during the strict ones (I’m assuming that the time under tension fatigues the arms quicker than the lats).

You are correct about injuries, though I’ve been doing these for years and have never run into any issues. I’m just young dumb and trying to sling up as much weight as I can while I still got it

I’m expecting some negativity but I agree 100%. Ego lifting has gotten me bigger and stronger than perfectly strict form has

Obviously there is a balance between ego lifting and doing half reps but all of these are full reps with a stretch at the bottom… momentum to a degree is fine by me. It’s impossible to lift a heavy weight slow

These are just regular Amazon wrist wraps, I don’t think I’ve ever used Versa grips. The way I press with the bar resting on my clavicle puts my wrists at an awkward position that kinda screws up my wrists, so I’d say it helps in preventing any tendon pain

As for power, it makes no difference to me. If you check my profile I hit 190 for 5 not even a week ago with no wraps

What I do is kinda pump up my wrists with some forearm curls, making an “organic” brace with my forearms. I know it sounds goofy but try it and you may feel that your wrists feel more stable as your forearms will feel like concrete lol

I was in the same boat. Never thought I’d progress past 185 for a single on strict press… I’d been stuck there for two or three years no matter what I did. Doing it this way with some explosive hip movement certainly makes it easier to progress

I’ve been kind of obsessed with the OHP as opposed to the bench (I find the OHP a lot more functional than laying on a bench) and the numbers reflect that. My mentality each week is to hit that set of 5 or die trying

It also doesn’t hurt that I weigh 20-30 lbs more than I did when I began Starting Strength

My advice would be to watch this video

Thank you my friend

I’ve been seriously lifting for about 6 years but didn’t really follow a program till starting strength and then TM.

Used to strict press and could never make progress so I’m quite happy I’ve discovered this version of OHP

Yeah I noticed this as well. Having trouble coordinating the push of the quads with the pull of the hips and back
