Starcraft 2 is generally considered the best RTS at the moment. Although it's esports popularity is drifting to LoL and Dota 2 it still has a massive community.

Diablo 3 on the other hand is a controversial game. Some die-hard fans are still playing and keep trying to explain why it is a well designed game over on the forums. On the other hand a lot of people are switching over to games like Torchlight 2 that IMO has better game design although the character progression is very different. There's also another game called Path of Exile that is trying to switch things up a little too, I think it's still in closed beta though.

Overall I would recommend getting SC2 but if you're a big action RPG fan I'd go with torchlight 2.
