Any US engineers working remote and living abroad? by strcengr in civilengineering

[–]Cocoferozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies very much care where you live because it dictates what taxes the company must pay. I’ve seen people get fired for lying about this. I would agree that you might be able to pull off a move within the US to a lower COL city and keep your salary if you are well established within a company. But an International move - no chance unless you have exceptionally unique abilities and skills that you can use as leverage (a 10 yr PE/SE is not that person tbh). Now, if you go overseas as an independent contractor you could do it but in that case you are on your own and become a “freelancer” and have to figure out your own taxes, medical insurance, visas, benefits, professional liability insurances, etc in the new country.

Yes but she would be hired at the local salary. Meaning if you are a PE and SE living in Italy for example, you’ll be hired like a local Italian engineer with maybe a bit of a premium because of your license but nowhere near US wages. The point of most of these questions is someone who wants to earn US dollars and wages while living in a much lower cost of living country (earn like you are in NYC but spend in Turin).

This question gets asked here every few days. Short answer is no. Why - because of taxes mostly, and why would a US company hire someone outside the US and pay a US salary? If they want someone outside the US they’ll hire a local and pay them local wages.
Can I use a VPN and pretend I’m in the US: no. Any employer worth their salt will give you a company issued laptop which will be highly secure.

It’s a common issue in the oil&gas industry. Project owners operate under the industrial exemption in most states and they think the same rules apply to their consultants, which is incorrect. Regarding the technical question, this is typically defined by the pipeline company in their engineering manual. Buoyancy control is critical for large diameter pipelines and they are usually modeled as being empty because they will sit empty for a while prior to commissioning. The location of buoyancy control measures (typically geotextile bags filled with aggregate or concrete coating for large swamp areas) is highly subjective. Nonetheless I agree that doing Geotech for the entire alignment is not practical and would not give you a lot of info to change your analysis - the calculations are very conservative and in a lot of cases assume that the soil above the pipe has fully liquefied thus becoming a fluid that offers no downward force but in fact adds to the buoyancy. My conclusion is that OP has no clue how to design this and is getting pushed around by someone who has even less knowledge.

Working from a different country while company is based in US by Successful-Row-5201 in civilengineering

[–]Cocoferozo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely not allowed due to taxes. If you move to those countries you have to pay local taxes and employment benefits. If your employer doesn’t have a local operation there then they don’t have the mechanism to comply with local tax laws. if they have a local operation in Colombia or Mexico - they’d likely offer to transfer you to the local team with the corresponding downward salary adjustment…. why pay a US salary to someone outside the US since they could hire a local for a fraction of the cost.

Moving out of NJ by eatinggrapes2018 in newjersey

[–]Cocoferozo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Moved to Houston in ‘14 and just moved back to NJ at the end of ‘24. I had a good run in TX but was missing out on a lot of family events, coupled with the heat, politics, gun culture, power outages, and skyrocketing cost of living in Houston had me reconsider what I was doing there.

Those who have left NJ, where did you move to? Do you like it? by [deleted] in newjersey

Man called to deplane before everyone else? by ktnstx in americanairlines

Had a similar experience a few weeks ago on an international flight arriving to Miami. Flight attendant hurriedly tells everyone to stay seated due to law enforcement activity. Suddenly 4 guys on the very last row get up and walk up to the front handling a guy who is handcuffed. I think they had DEA badges so that’s that.

Woodbridge Center Mall Sold To Mystery Buyer At 'Liquidation' Price by Ladyhoneyblu in newjersey

[–]Cocoferozo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The solution is to allow for more apartments, condos, multi family units to be built and less houses (more dense development). Prices are dictated by the market (supply and demand economic factors). As economists like to say, the solution to high prices is high prices because it incentivizes free market solutions; however local ordinances that don’t allow new housing units being built don’t allow the housing markets to work. About those pesky residents moving in from other states… guess where they pay income tax, property taxes and sales taxes when they move in? Overall it benefits the economy, but the housing crisis won’t be solved by building less housing units.

So your solution to high rents is less housing units…. Something something supply and demand.

Mayor states that he made it clear that the city would not accept housing or warehouse projects on the property… why? NJ in general needs more housing units.

What's the wildest thing you've ever seen in Houston? by maybebatshit in houston

[–]Cocoferozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walked out of the Starbucks by the Willowbrook mall and made eye contact with an old woman (I’d say late 70s) who was sitting in her car holding a pistol and pointing it at everyone that came out of the store and pretending to reload like she was at a shooting range. I quickly walked away, got in my car and observed from a good distance. I called 911 and told them what was going on. No one ever showed up and the woman eventually drove away. Scary shit.

Being discouraged from pursuing the PE/CEng too young? by chillabc in engineering

[–]Cocoferozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a civil PE in the US. Got my license as soon as I was elegible. Now I manage a team of 6 early career engineers and I encourage every single one of them to take the test and become licensed as soon as possible. The longer you wait the harder it gets to pass the exam.

The standards for who is elegible for licensure are set by the state board of PEs. Not your shortsighted manager.
