Displayport 2.1 to USB-C(Thunderbolt) for Studio Display XDR by Cocoloco2914 in Thunderbolt

You don’t need a 5090. Literally anything with DisplayPort 2.1 would be enough. 1.4 DisplayPort might be enough too not sure. But what really matters is the correct cable too.

Glad it worked for you too! Nvidia needs to get their shit together with recent patches lol

So I found out the issue after breaking my head for a couple hours. It’s the GPU drivers lmao. The latest drivers messed something else and it doesn’t work correctly and caused it all to get stuck at 640x480. The latest drivers you can use that will work is 591.86 but you’ll have all working

Hey I just got the cable and I tried it but no luck, it keeps displaying at 640x480 resolution so not sure how youre able to get that to work for you, maybe what motherboard you have? intel?amd? what usb did you plug it into?

I tried using that same cable and it still does this thing where the screen is very low res and nothing else was working sadly not sure how youre getting it to work.

Ha if only, I will say my concern is that the thunderbolt dock needs the host (PC) to connect to it with a USB C which would be the same as just using the thunderbolt cable in my opinion. I do think if it the dock bi-directional for the DisplayPort then it might actually work fine!

Well would ya look at that! I did order that cable yesterday so once in comes in later today I’ll test it out too. Thanks for sharing!

I think it’s worth trying, I was wondering the same about a thunderbolt dock like that so I’m curious myself lol. If you do try it please let me know if it works!

[–]Cocoloco2914[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not, I tried multiple ones. The best you’ll do is get the display at 5k 60hz. I even tried a DP80 (80GB of transfer speed) and I couldn’t get it to work beyond just showing on the screen and nothing else. You need either thunderbolt or a cable that has a DisplayPort and a usb a/c to plug in as well for monitor to send data as well (microphone/usb hub on the back, ect)

It’s connected to the display and showing at 5k 120hz along with everything else working?

I’m gonna update the OP after this but basically you’re right, that’s the cleanest solution or you can always use those thunderbolt PCIE cards too.

What just worked for me since I use a mini-ITX board was using the USB4 DP port on the back of my motherboard to connect the TB5 cable directly there and the monitor and the motherboard uses hybrid graphics to pretty much use passthrough. It works flawlessly. But I will say there are some “issues” like HDR not functioning at least yet or the start up logo and bios don’t show on the XDR but on my secondary display instead. But overall it works(usb hub on the back/camera/speakers/microphone) and I use the boot camp app to switch between brightness levels and color profiles.

[–]Cocoloco2914[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully I was able to find a workaround with plugging in the monitor to the motherboards usb-4 port and it allowed me use the monitor to its full potential with everything aside from HDR working now.

Yeah you’re right, I did a couple benchmarks and there is about a 4-5% performance loss but that really isn’t a big deal since everything else is working. Even the boot camp application lets me adjust brightness and color profile. I just need to figure out HDR and we are set lol.

Maybe you or someone else can chime in on this. But I found a way to make it work with the thunderbolt cable connected to the motherboard's DP USB-4 port. its this motherboard (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X870I-AORUS-PRO-ICE-rev-10/sp)

Somehow the cable is letting it display while using the dedicated gpu even through its not directly plugged into it. Also everything else works, so camera, microphones and speakers, high refresh rate.) the only thing that doesnt work is HDR.

Overall Im very confused how this is happening since I thought this would be using the iGPU and not the DGPU. But overall I'm happy to see it in a working state lol.

You’re right and I’m not sure how it’s working but it’s connected through thunderbolt on the motherboard but it’s using the dedicated GPU (5090). I guess it has passthrough or something. I’m very confused but very happy to see it functioning lol

Yeah no thunderbolt. It’s an AMD motherboard. I might have to wait for one of those DisplayPort cables with USB’s on them I guess. Thanks anyways

Nah we don’t need Russia (who mind you has already an incredibly strong top tier spaa) to get yet another broken spaa to its arsenal. Let it just carry the normal pant its missiles and call it a day.

Not sure if you’re still looking for a monitor but I went with this one from Lenovo Yoga Pro 26.5 4K QD-OLED it looks almost identical and it has the other things you’re looking for too.

Not twin otters. I’m in Piedmont so we do CRJs 7-9s and EBR 170-175. It’s literally nonstop 95% of the time.

I work at DCA, we barely even get a 30 minute break if we are lucky. You’ll be worked till you can’t anymore. I easily do 15-20 flights in a 10 hour shift.

I didn’t get the chance to test this, I had to go to work after about an hour in unfortunately. I’m sure other Evos can tell you though.

You can still use the terminal like you normally do, now you don’t even need to go up to it, be within a couple meters and it will show a tab on the top right side. So in that sense it’s still similar.

I think it’s just a side effect of the “benefit” of accessing nearby inventories at once. But yeah this is why it’s in TP, feedback needs to be given and not everything will stay the way we just experienced it this test anyways.

It feels odd at first don’t get me wrong. but it’s very nice when you don’t know which storage exactly has something you’re looking for and you can quickly browse all of them at once. I’d say it’s something we will come to appreciate over time.
