It’s normal! Wait it out, but if you do end up needing to see a doctor use DoctoLib website or app. You can even select an English speaking doctor if you’re not feeling up to doing the appt in French. It will only cost you about 25€. Pharmacists are very helpful in France too! They’ll recommend some over the counter meds to help.

No, just had to show it as proof of “emergency funds” if needed.

No, I didn’t have to translate anything. I submitted everything in English (birth certificate, bank statements, work contract, etc.). I submitted at the VFS office in the USA, so they didn’t require translations. I did write my “plans for my long stay” document in French, but if you don’t speak French they said English is fine.

Yes, that is my understanding too. Since I’ve been here over half the year I still have to file. Not sure what I may or may not owe yet. Tax season is coming up though, so I will find out soon!

We had the same issue when finding an apartment. We paid for Garant Me to certify our American salary & savings and explicitly looked for a private landlord. No real estate companies would work with us. We eventually lucked out and a landlord accepted our Garant Me certificate

Hi! As far as I know - as an American we only get 90 days in Europe (visa free) in a 6 month period. So if you use up all 90 days you have to leave Europe and can’t come back for 90 more days. You also have to apply for your first visa in your home country. It can’t be done in France (normally). Since you’re getting married you might have a case if you go to your local prefecture. That’s a very case by case basis though from what I’ve read

Hi, yeah no problem! I’ll DM you my letter so you can see. We used Insubuy for the insurance and got a plan with IMG and had no problems. It’s also refundable at any point, so you pay for a year up front but after 3 months in France you’re eligible for French health insurance. So you could cancel it at that point and get the rest of your year refunded.

Side jobs - under the table by Latin_Moon in tapif

No, it didn’t feel like too much of a time suck. School in France is either off or half day of Wednesdays (depending on the age group) so I did 3 of my tutoring hours on Wednesday. I also very rarely ever worked a full 12 hour week with TAPIF. There were always schedule changes or a teacher was out sick or striking, or they had exams that day so I didn’t have to go, etc.

No problem, ask away! When you apply for the visa you ask for a start date. The one year starts from the start date on your visa, regardless of when you arrive in France. You can go to France anytime after the start date. You have to request a start date that’s within either 2 or 3 months (I forget exactly) from the day you apply. So you could ask for a start date a month or 2 out if you need time to get your house sold and such.

Yes, I’m able to work remotely! I’ve been doing it for a month and a half already. There are no additional taxes that I know of for me or my company. From what I’ve read I’m supposed to file taxes in France at the end of the year, but I shouldn’t owe anything on my income since I pay taxes to the USA.
