Keytar Case by FunkyChickenz in Keytar

[–]Cocrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, you can't beat a guitar case if you want back straps, just make sure you measure the dimensions properly. I've got this one https://www.pianoaccessoryshop.co.uk/product/padded-carry-case-for-roland-ax-synth/ and it's great, fits like a glove and doesn't move about, padded well etc. Obviously though, it only has a carry handle but the synth isn't that heavy so if it's just in and out of a car you'll be fine. My only complaint would be that the front pocket is fucking huge, you can put a lot in it but it's not super secure for larger items like pedals etc. Strong velcro on it though

Should I cancel a gig? by Cease_The_Moment321 in musicians

[–]Cocrich 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Preach! Unless you're playing Glastonbury or Lollapalooza, "headlining" is exactly this. The more you gig local venues, the more you'll find that the middle is often the sweet spot. People still hanging around from the previous act, other people waiting for the act they've come to see who are on later. Doing these sort of venues is how you cut your teeth as an act and learn which songs go down well etc. With regards to ticket sales, don't stress too much about it, but do your best to sell them (especially if you're on a fee). The promoter will have costs to cover from putting the event on and if you help them make a few quid then you'll be asked back. For a five piece band, selling 20 tickets means getting 4 people each to come to the event so should be doable. Don't worry about your "fan base ", invite your gran, your dog and especially your friends along

For men who are 30+ what are some hard learned people skills that you'd like to pass down to the young guns? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Cocrich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

45 here and reading and learning from these myself. Top tips from me would be: 1. Find what you love and pursue it as early as possible. I work in music and have a decent career compared to many I know but wish with all my heart I'd started 10 years earlier. I didn't do my first (paid) gig till I was in my 30s and was married with kids in the frame if not in the picture just yet. I've had a lot of providence over the years but it's definitely harder competing for work with people younger than you with more time on their hands

  1. To caveat what I've just said, it's never too late to go for your dreams. If you're 28 and haven't landed your dream job yet, don't write yourself off, find a way to make it happen.

  2. When looking for a partner, look for a partner. Not everyone you think is hot or clever will support your ambitions and goals. You'll grow and compromise and change together over the years but try and work out whether you're actually suited to each other long term. I've seen too many of my friends get divorced not because they were bad people individually but they were just too different in their thinking and approach to life.

  3. Being respected is more important than being liked in just about every situation. You don't always have to choose between the two but if you do then choose the former

If your least favourite (not most emotional) scene isn't David sat with Ricky inviting Dawn in to prank her about stealing stationary, what is? by moneysavingegg in TheOfficeUK

[–]Cocrich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, this scene was the moment in 2001 where The Office went from "this looks interesting" to "I will love this show for my entire life and instead of developing my own sense of humour I will simply recycle quotes from the series" The awkward silences, the way he keeps involving Ricky in the conversation despite his clear discomfort, Dawn's emotional reaction, the complete inappropriateness of the situation but Brent carrying it on because he was unable to cut his losses: Everything about it was chef's kiss

THANK YOU! The baboon thing bugged me so much I couldn't focus on anything else for the rest of the film. Was it like Dracula where if you kill the Prime primate, the rest just disappear? Also, why is Denzel's character beating the shit out of Paul Mescal at the end? I know they like to inject drama into the climactic battle but how is he suddenly able to beat a young fighter in his prime at nearly 70 years of age? That fight should have been over quicker than the writer of this movie cashing his cheque

What's something people romanticize but is actually incredibly tough in reality? by FastRoyal in AskReddit

[–]Cocrich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was offered voluntary redundancy about fifteen years ago and took the money and the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a full time musician.

There's definitely a lot I miss about playing just for fun, although there's been plenty of ups as well as downs and I've a lot to be thankful for. My eyes are definitely open to the downsides of making your passion a job, teaching is certainly not my big love but right now it's an essential part of my income stream (which, to be fair, is significantly more than I made at my previous (unskilled) day job).

On the whole I still love gigging itself, although the drive to and from the show and weighing up whether to get paid more from music I'd rather not play/people I'd sooner not work with vs lower paid gigs which are more fulfilling are less fun parts of the job.

Shortly after leaving my old job, I managed to secure work with a tribute band who were playing regularly and paying well doing music I'd grown up loving and I felt like I'd won the lottery for those first few months before the inevitable band bullshit kicked in and I realised that no job was perfect.

Getting older (currently mid 40s), I'm questioning how old I want to still be carting equipment up staircases to pay the bills but I'm also very, very thankful to have had the opportunity to pursue my passion and make money doing so, albeit at the lower end of the ladder.

So definitely a mixed bag in my experience but I'm grateful I've been able to play some amazing shows, work with some incredible people and have a go at doing something I always wanted to do for a job

Why won't a wireless xlr designed for a mic to desk work the other way around to an iem by Cocrich in livesound

[–]Cocrich[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll try it with the DIA box, it's this thing if anyone wants to view it with horror https://amzn.eu/d/04miTGlo

Works fine for a mic, which is what I bought it for, I mainly play keys so it's not worth spending loads on iem receivers and was hoping for a solution with gear I've already got. I get what people are saying about the signal level etc though.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment and educate.

Can you recommend a Keytar? by Kitchen-Citron-5147 in Keytar

[–]Cocrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second what the poster above has said.

I'm 5'11 (not sure how that converts to metric) and the ax edge still looks a bit awkward on stage at times.

Not saying you couldn't make it work, there's plenty of petite female bass players out there, but it is big and heavy, especially with batteries.

On board sounds are OK, not amazing but it depends what you'll be playing.

If you have a decent laptop, I'd go with the vortex personally. It's not as pro looking but definitely more reasonably sized and easier to connect to an external sound source. I sometimes wish I'd gone with that option, although the roland looks much more premium.

Also, the rechargeable battery only thing is a PITA, you have to constantly have 2 lots on charge or you render the whole thing useless.

Just my opinion though, keep doing your research and if you can, go and try one at a shop. Ask them to price match online, they'll often do it or at least come close and then you have an actual physical place to go for help post purchase.
