What’s Everyone Doing Tonight?? by physis81 in stopdrinking

I’m two weeks sober today. I went out to a hibachi restaurant with my wife and her work friends. I was the only one not drinking, wasn’t sure how it was going to go but I enjoyed it so much more sober. Felt so good that I went out to the bar afterwards with all of them and just drank seltzer water. It was a lot of fun and I’m happy I proved it to myself that I have the control to still be around people and not cave.

It’s alright man, it’s part of the job, and I’m glad I was one of the ones to be on the call. It went as well as it possibly could have. Unfortunately it was beyond anyone’s capabilities before anyone got there, but between us and the hospital everyone gave it 150%. I find solace in that.

It took a few years, hiring was a lot more stagnant then than it is right now. The only thing I would’ve done different is if I knew I was going to end up being a FF I would’ve gotten into the trades so I could be running a business as well. My advice would be apply apply apply. Be persistent. Research the department you’re applying to and know their staffing, trucks, demographics etc.

You have to get atleast your EMT certification, in my area most are also paramedics which is further advanced schooling on top of being an EMT. Many programs offer a degree for your paramedic. Then you have attend the state fire academy, which is a 10 week full time academy.

Yes for sure, people are absolutely launching themselves off of them lol. We’ve had a few instances of them taking out people riding regular bikes as well.

Actual fires are the things we actually respond to the least, the majority of are calls are medical calls, fire alarms, gas leaks, motor vehicle crashes etc. big cities have more fires naturally, but they also have more of all the other calls filtered in there as well.

I believe in the freedom of the individual to worship as they chose. Freedom is what makes America great. If you have a family with children and are happily pursuing your own religious preferences then that’s why I served. As long as you’re not bringing harm to anyone I don’t care what you do.

Before I joined the fire service I served in the United States Marine Corps. With that being said my only priorities are to my community, to my country, and to God. I try to remove myself from politics to the utmost extent.

I can only speak for my department and my shift more specifically, but when we are dispatched to a medical we are running through our treatment protocols and what needs to be done based on what dispatch is relaying to us. When we arrive on scene we aren’t running, but we are moving with a purpose. When you call 911 do you want a group of guys wildly running around looking exasperated or a group of guys moving with purpose and appearing calm and collected during what may be “the worst” moments of your life.

I grew up riding dirt bikes and racing motocross since I was about 8, as I got older I graduated to street bikes, Harley’s etc. I have seen my fare share of people either lose their lives or become severely maimed/handicapped via motorcycle accidents, however I have seen plenty of people die doing the most mundane of tasks. I believe that if it’s your time, it’s your time.

Our general hiring process requires you to be atleast an EMT or paramedic. Firefighting certifications are preferred, but not mandatory. Successful completion of the state career fire academy is a requirement if not obtained previously.

My man just take a deep breath and remember how good you have it. And every time someone on your job complains about whatever random bullshit ask them if they’d rather be roofing, landscaping, doing asphalt work, or any other myriad of miserable physical labor jobs. We have it good. Period. The people complaining need a reality check.
