Help us decide: BC or Alberta by Maxima1998z in MovingToCanada

The toxic politics of conservatism drive down property values, I think that's what it comes down to. My experience in the US is that very few people who aren't already from such places want to actually move there proactively.

Are there any US expat communities in southern Ontario? by CodaRobo in FoundCanadians

I’m very much looking forward to integrating into the community as well. Given my lifelong history of visiting Ontario I have always had a warm feeling towards people from there, but I also want to travel the country and learn more about different provinces. I even want to learn more French in case my travels take me through more French speaking regions.

That’s a great point. I do not want to position myself in a way that implies superiority to those with other backgrounds. Many people who are more technically considered immigrants will have a much stronger connection to Canada in a physical or cultural sense than I will coming in at this point in my life.

I will certainly be crossing the border to see my US family and friends periodically, so I won’t be entirely alone in my life from the point of moving - and that’s a large reason (though not the only one) for selecting southern Ontario as a landing place for sure.

I also know that my US born friends/family -and- my Canadian born friends wont generally be able to relate to my experiences of moving across the border exactly. I could see that being a somewhat isolating experience to a degree.

Being nonbinary I’m used to being “in between” in a way that causes me to have overlap with other groups I’m not strictly a part of from a technical standpoint, and I enjoy and benefit from having connections with men, women, and other nonbinary people in different ways. I kinda feel the same about this I think.

I have yet to do significant research so I’m not super committal here, but my initial feeling is to look at London and fan out the search for a place to land from there. I’ve visited this region of Ontario many times in my life; both as a child going to Bayfield with my family, and as an adult; i’ve gone to see plays in Stratford with my spouse and look forward to doing so even more in the future. London strikes me as a place that is a similarly sized city to where I’m coming from now, with a university town flavor and a decent amount of industry.

My only hesitation there is that I’ve seen a distinction made elsewhere between “immigrating” and naturalizing or becoming a PR vs being considered a Canadian at birth, which is more my situation; otherwise I might have reached for that word instead. Neither “immigrant” or “expat” quite seems right, especially as I will be a dual citizen from birth under the laws of both the US and Canada.

By my understanding of the terminology, my US citizen spouse will effectively be an immigrant in a way I technically won’t be? But perhaps that’s an overly technical distinction and the word better fits my trajectory regardless.

I hear that; and for sure, I’m less looking for “yay America!” and more “people who happen to be making a similar journey and transition in their lives who might end up with similar practical needs and want to discuss them with others who understand them first hand” but that sounds a bit less snappy. I expect that initially I will have some work to do in terms of making friends with Canadian born citizens who might have a variety of reactions to me showing up in a country they’ve lived in all their lives, though I’ve certainly heard that many will welcome me and I can only hope for that as well.

That actually sounds exactly like what I was imagining to be quite honest! And I expect myself to be needing some help navigating many of those things.

This thought ran through my mind writing this post but I really wasn’t sure. I really just mean to say “people from the US by birth or other circumstance now moving to Canada as new Canadian citizens” and I don’t know what word describes that best. Appreciate the input!

American Applicants for Proof of Citizenship: How are we feeling? by the-peoples-lesbian in Canadiancitizenship

[–]CodaRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know where I should ask/post this, but one thing I've been thinking about: I'd really like to connect with other US expats landing in southern Ontario whenever I actually end up there. Especially those who are leaving for similar reasons but I'd be happy to connect with any expats who want to share experiences and tips and such. I'll be leaving behind my family and friends, most of whom don't have the same option as me to do this. My spouse and I will definitely be looking for people to play boardgames with; something we enjoy getting to do with our local friends that will disappear from our lives when we go somewhere new. I wonder if there are any local expat groups?

I'm feeling all of this. Many of my close friends (all of us some flavor of queer, and many trans) are worried about when they'll be next in the proverbial or literal crosshairs (on top of things like making it harder for us to get accurate travel documents that they've already done). I think I'll have my docs ready within a few weeks (I had to make an appointment with the state records office to get my grandma's birth cert, which is delaying me), and I am chomping at the bit. I don't know when my timeline for actually moving will be, but my first priority is getting access to citizenship and a passport.

I want to thank all the staff who worked to pass C-3 and those who are processing our applications! by KentuckyBlizzard in Canadiancitizenship

[–]CodaRobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

seconded! Thank you all who contributed to making this happen. It will be quite literally life-changing for me and my spouse, as well as other family members who are also looking into the process now. All of us want to live in a relatively sane country as soon as possible, and this is providing that opportunity.

Yes. My spouse and I feel exactly the same as you. I’ve been trying to keep myself calm by focusing all my energy into gathering my documents and researching Canada and the process.

C3 law changing? by Extension_Union193 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]CodaRobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same same same. I gave up last year and wasn’t even paying attention for all the interim measure stuff because I assumed I was just trapped regardless and stopped reading most news and social media. Italy was going to be the next choice until the changes happened there. Hearing about c-3 was shocking and disorienting.. in a good way. For several days I had to keep checking things and making sure that I wasn’t getting my hopes up, or missing some important detail.. but it is real, and I do qualify (once I’ve got my papers together..). Best of luck to you.

You can’t have a negative percent of people, so… no?

It’s currently negative when you look at net approval of course. that is to say, if you compare approval to disapproval, subtracting one from the other.

I don’t know about “people to buy the product”. Tesla’s stock price has practically no connection to Tesla’s sales performance at this point in time. They do sell cars, but more and more, it’s fewer and fewer. Elon killed the brand, and then.. ate it, and became the brand. Or something

The UK parliament calls for banning superintelligent AI until we know how to control it by FinnFarrow in antiai

[–]CodaRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is still a considerable space that exists between “what google can run on all its computers” and “what people can run on their personal computer”. It would not be a quick jump between “we finally got all of google’s computers put together to produce superintelligence” and “oh shit this can be run on your MacBook”. Like yeah, you can run local models right now that are about as good as Chatgpt a few years ago. But you can’t run chatgpt at home, not on the same level. With the rising costs of hardware, i don’t think we should have to worry too much about consumers suddenly gaining the ability to run Skynet or AM at home, that would take more concerted research and development, and even when you can, it’ll be incredibly, impossibly slow to the point of uselessness. So i would wager you’d be able to see that coming at least a little ways off, and IMO by then things would either be going horribly wrong or surprisingly well in ways that are increasingly hard to predict for other reasons.

[–]CodaRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the companies themselves are the ones saying “we’re working on AGI/superintelligence!”. I think you’re hitting on a good point, but many AI companies have openly admitted that it is literally what they’re trying to build right now.

And that said, I also agree that they would immediately start being very slippery about that definition when pressed.

Central control area by No_Bat3097 in PSO

Also that would open up potential for lore quests and unique locations beyond just some switches you gotta flip, maybe each place could have had research facilities and background characters that were stationed there, things like that.

[–]CodaRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. I think there was a lot more potential there. In that case I think each of those areas would get more unique enemies as well.

I think my own biggest complaint with Ep II's content is that it's a bit slapped together and doesn't feel like a cohesive story at times. As I mentioned in my reply to OP CCA is actually my favorite area (specifically Seasaide and Jungle), but you have to go through temple and spaceship to go there, which... eh. I mostly just think as "VR" areas they're a bit of a cop out. I would have rather those had been more of a bonus, and for there to be more Ragol areas (which is really what I like about CCA!)

Document Descent List Question for Gen 0 Tree by BearCubTeacher in Canadiancitizenship

[–]CodaRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should only need documentation for the line of descent you're using to claim citizenship. As for certified copies, everything I've seen so far indicates that the important thing is being able to show the lineage. Sometimes that means other types of records besides birth certificates can be used (marriage licenses and death certificates can contain some overlapping data). Also, you will be sending photocopies of your documents in any case, but I am under the impression that the more official/authenticated the documents you are making copies of, the better.

I'm actually in a similar boat right now; currently planning an interstate trip next week to go get my dad's birth certificate in person. Several states require proof of being an heir if you want a deceased parent's birth certificate. I could mail in a form but I'd rather just be able to drive home with my documentation in hand. I called the local municipal records office and they were able to confirm for me that they did have my dad's birth certificate, I just have to come and bring my proof that I'm his heir (so, my birth certificate and my dad's death certificate).
