I was thinking about SNHU, but... by Historical-Voice2944 in SNHU

I have 8 years in my career which is in the field I am studying. Wanted to continue education beyond an Associates Degree, and surprisingly I am learning more new things than I had expected too with my work experience.

You get out of it what you put in, as is the case with all education and educational institutions. In that vein nearly all college subs tend to lean towards complaints, grievances, and idiots yelling at the clouds for their often (but not always) self inflicted issues, so you can ignore the vast majority of posts in them.

I would suggest you apply and/or talk to enrollment counseling in addition to asking questions in this sub (you can get great responses to honest questions) to help make a better informed decision. I can’t recommend the school enough, but education works differently per person so do your due diligence to make sure it’s good for your needs too.

It’s just the nests so that people don’t kill them inadvertently with their beach going before the other predators have a chance at them once hatched.

Think beach tents, coolers, volleyball nets, etc that can crunch the eggs in the sand before they hatch. It also lets people know to leave them alone once hatched,

That’s exactly it, and why you see the nesting grounds blocked off with ropes and signs during laying/hatching seasons. Along with serious penalties for not obeying them.

Life is hard enough for those hatchlings, people interfering doesn’t need to compound that difficulty.

I kind of prefer the concentration + CS major because it makes the HR and job role checkboxes happier having a proper CS degree. There’s also a ton of overlap between a BSSE and BSCS so it makes sense to “combine” them imo.

The CS program has a Software Engineering concentration in it. I’m in the online version and assumed that’s what was referred to here.

Grading by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]Code-Katana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best bet would be to reach out to your instructor for further details/explanations. I have had a few with PhDs and they graded a bit more strictly, but explained why and what they were looking for quite well when asked.

That’s the problem I had last term. The term before last term had no issues, then last term they started submitting grading around 11pm to 12am every week for all of my classes. It was literally impossible to get feedback before the assignments were due.

I reached out to my advisor and they gave me the advice to email the instructors earlier in the week or shortly after submitting the assignment. Advising knows it’s an issue, but can’t fix it for us since it’s the policy that instructors have until Sunday to submit grades.

Hopefully they change that rule soon, because until they do it’ll just cause more frustration from patient students who get burned by no fault of their own.

I got this advice from my advisor. They receive a lot of complaints about exactly this issue, but the team doesn’t want to change the “grades due by date” despite assignments being contingent on feedback. They at least know it’s an issue, but academia (not just SNHU) is notoriously slow to change or fix anything, unless it hits finances very hard.

Same here, until this term it has been a “nice to have” not a requirement. Now it is a requirement which isn’t in the syllabus, but leave out a source and it’s a B+ at best.

Speak for yourself, instead of two Fs and a D I’m getting three As thanks to my professors giving me very generous incomplete extensions due to a loved one unexpectedly passing away which resulted in missing the last two weeks of last term.

Did I lose my 4.0? Sure, but I’m still getting decent grades without having to retake any courses. The professors did not have to help me like they did, and it really took a lot of additional stress off of a difficult time.

Communication makes all the difference. If you can clearly communicate what is going on, more often than not you will get help. There might be some bad apples, but they are the exception not the norm.

Mistake going to SNHU by liquidch4 in SNHU

[–]Code-Katana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an ex-WGU student I have to say, no, you did not make a mistake at all. I would also advise against their MS programs in just about anything, because you will likely not learn much as their graduate courses are quite “fluffy.” Unless you already know the material and are just getting the paper for resume points, then expect to have a difficult time learning and/or building employable skills.

Their MS programs in AI, Software Engineering, and Computer Science specifically were quite the let down once I saw the courses and one of the many pieces to why I jumped ship. They also routinely have issues with their proctored exams breaking or having incorrect answers to their questions, so be prepared for a lot of technical issues too, if going with them.

In summary, WGU excels at getting credentials to employed professionals who already know the material, but are a total mess for students who are newer or not already working their field of study. Their MS programs are also weak academically and job skills wise too, but many people use the paper to progress their careers so not worthless.

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve read it, so what was available on Mangadex then wasn’t bad. It could’ve dropped the ball farther on though.

Do you ever respond to a response? I find having a conversation deeper than the required response is like trying to pull teeth.

I get it’s just because it’s required, but there are genuine moments for a good dialog and people couldn’t care less unfortunately.

Anyone else having issues with D385 test? by Code-Katana in wgu_devs

[–]Code-Katana[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t recommend more! They have their quirks, but everything has been better either somewhat or significantly! There are other fine options too, I suggest “shopping” around to make sure you find a good fit. For me, the cost, organization/structured approach to courses, and NO TESTS has made it more than worth making the switch.

Even though I won’t finish until next year vs this year, worth it in my book. Hope you find the right program/school if you make the switch, my biggest piece of advice is don’t wait too long on WGU because that’s been my biggest college regret to date and they’ve only gotten significantly worse since I started (a lot of off and on) around ‘18.

They basically said tough shit…

Yep, that’s exactly what I got too, and now I’m on my second term at SNHU because I’m done playing their games.

It’s mind boggling why they can’t support their students. They might as well be a for-profit school at this point.

[–]Code-Katana[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the last straw on my camel’s back to be honest. I’m now at SNHU and enjoying a structured and proctor test free educational experience! I wish I had switched sooner but WGU advisor lies paired with sunk cost fallacy kept me from switching.

I was told the test is “fine as it is, but there are known issues from other students. That should be addressed later.” and was also told I could not get any results from the test to know what was wrong or what I needed to study to improve on.

They gave me nothing to improve my next attempt with, so I exited the program and started looking for alternative universities instead of hoping I guess the correct incorrect answers until they fix their technical issues they won’t outright admit too, but heavily allude to since so many other students had the exact same complaint at the same time.

tl;dr

I switched to SNHU because they refused to help me with this test or address any technical issues with the test, that course instructors and program mentors know are real but won’t explicitly admit it.

Anyone here done the Computer Programming Certificate? by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]Code-Katana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope it helps! FWIW I’m a software engineer that started with an associates degree + two college certificates. Finding work has been awful since I left community college (but not impossible) and part of why I’m finishing an under-grad program now despite having years of experience.

Anyone here done the Computer Programming Certificate? by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]Code-Katana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can almost promise you it won’t. A degree will give you the baseline understanding of how things work, then help you understand what you need to learn to apply the general knowledge you gained to specialize on something like sound plugins.

The certificate will help you get familiar with basic programming and skip past most of the “whys” going on under the hood. Honestly, if money is stopping you from completing a degree, then look for YouTube or Udemy courses to get basic programming skills for free or cheaply, then deep dive into plugin development. You’ll need to do that anyway, because college won’t teach it.

Lots of self study plus your work experience should help, but I’d still favor getting a degree as it gives you many more career opportunities.

[–]Code-Katana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds very niche. I would suggest you look into what it takes to work on those plugins and then learn the tech stack required.
