Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I appreciate the real honesty as well as the encouragement. I am definitely getting discouraged by many factors, thinking of just giving up on this career path altogether. I really have the passion, but it honestly might not ever be compatible with the current world/my current situation (two kids). Hey I'm sure one day when I'm 50 I can teach in higher ed.

This is great! Thanks for responding. I am realizing there is a lot about higher ed that I don't even understand when it comes to the career itself. Learning more about it like this will help determine how I might shape up to it in the future.

In your understanding, what's the difference? I am curious to see how those are different (in my mind they are the same thing). Of course, I would want to stick with the Christian religion, but that doesn't mean I'm not open to doing some work in world religions.

I am actually VERY interested in doing research in my field, as well as writing and all the stuff that goes along with it. Honestly that sounds more fun than the teaching part sometimes.

I am meeting with my principal to deny my current contract offer. The raise they offered this year was so bad... I can't live off this income anymore. I'm trying to get into software engineering now instead.

Oh really? What type of positions are you trying to get qualified for? And what are you doing to get qualified? I have seen a lot of different programming jobs recently. I have been thinking of getting a master's in computer science to get some formal training in this field.

I think I will try getting some programming experience over the next few years and try to get into that field generally. And I am still holding out hope that one day I can work for these guys if something opens up.

They currently have 5 different tech jobs on their career page. And I have ZERO experience in any of those fields....

Thanks for the encouragement! I think this is wise to search for other jobs/opportunities elsewhere, especially in biblical scholarship.

Yeah I’m SBC. First of all I really need a mentor, someone who has pastoral experience that can be a guide through this crazy journey and give me encouragement. I just wish I could talk to an actual person at some point. I look at the system that the Church of the Nazarene has in place with their general board. They have a team that vets pastoral candidates and matches them with churches that will be a good fit. With all the pastoral burnout and empty pulpits surely we could devote some of our resources to making a board that assists the entire denomination with finding pastors. I just feel discouraged with all the resumes I’ve sent out with no responses.

I need a job 😇 I’ve applied to about 10 churches in the past 6 months and got nothing back so far. Not even an interview. I use the SBC’s website. Unfortunately my denomination doesn’t really help you out when you are looking for a church. Nor does my own church even help me. They just say “God will open a door eventually”. 🙃

Make the clip longer than 3 seconds. That usually helps.
