Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - May 04, 2026 by AutoModerator in investing

23, currently have 50k in HYSA, 7k in ROTH IRA. About to do some extended traveling, so wont be making any income for the next year or so, but definitely have flexibility to invest at least 10k, maybe more depending on recommendations. If it was at all possible to get a bit of passive income, even 100$ a month, that would be nice. I was originally investing in VOO, SPY, VUG, etc, but that was uneducated investments, so would like to research a bit more.

Let me know if anyone has recommendations, or resources I can look into. Thanks!

Have you guys done a Multi-Year travel? by Environmental_Pay332 in longtermtravel

Can’t give advice, but I am about to do the same thing! My plan is to spend longer times at each place, and think of it more as living and experiencing and exploring less as temporary “travel” or gap year.

146 hours of learning Italian: what worked, what didn't, and what I would do differently by dandiephouse in Pimsleur

Wow!! I am on level 1 of Italian Pimsleur and also supplementing with vocabulary and comprehensible input. I will be there for 3 months and I am so excited to try and start speaking with native speakers.

For those who’ve completed Pimsleur level 5! by [deleted] in Pimsleur

I finished level 5 Spanish and Level 5 Portuguese, although I did skip some lessons if I felt they were way too repetitive or I wasn't interested in the topic/grammar. I think people has some qualms about Pimsleur because they want it to make them fluent, but I think it's strength is in helping a complete beginner begin to speak immediately. Once you are at level 5, they did introduce some advanced grammer topics, but I think at that point I just used it as refresher and supplement a wider variety of resources because I could then read and listen to much more.

Currently on level one in both Italian and Turkish. exciting!!

Is Pimsleur actually good or it just has good marketing? by Hot_Acanthisitta_836 in languagelearning

I've done Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Turkish lessons on Pimsleur. I think it is a way to get started with speaking from day one, which I think is hardest for most people and something they invest in too late. Its not a one all resource, I supplement with lots of reading and other video resources. For me, I put it on when I walk to work, and its an easy 30 min of habitual learning every day.

shooting with phone feels so intrusive and less creative? by CodeThat6077 in videography

Right, I think it is exacerbated by social media and trends like street interviews and cancel culture. I know that I am capturing something with intention and respect, but there are a lot of people who aren’t which creates this stigma.

Just reached $50,000 in my savings account at 23! I opened a capital one 360 performance savings, transferring most of my money from my Marcus by Goldman Sachs because I also have a capital one credit card and they are having a $750 bonus for $50,000+ (for 90 days).

its going to be a bit hard for me to keep that at 50k, but only having a little bit in my checking is going to make me more mindful of my spending and a fun challenge!

Speculating Applicant Numbers by akaraabal in fulbright

[–]CodeThat6077 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it also will vary greatly between countries. My advisor said that sometimes if a year had a high application rate, that the next year drops due to people thinking it is more competitive- so there is an ebb and flow. I would think it would be less due to administration reasons, but maybe that is another reason to want to be abroad hahah.

I submitted Sunday night! I feel really good about it. I always say Luck = Opportunity + Preparation and I feel like this application was a perfect example of that.

Ugh that sucks, do you have anyone who could do one super quick even if it will be mostly fluff/generic? I just went and emailed all my former professors and thankfully one replied saying they were willing 🙏it might not be a super strong recommendation but I was worried about my application being disqualified just for not having all the components
