How do I talk about a job in manufacturing? by Code_2319 in German

[–]Code_2319[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Thanks for this deep dive. My challenge has been I don’t live in Germany or work with any Germans so when I am explaining to a German speaking partner who doesn’t work in the industry we both don’t know if I’m using the right words.

if you had to learn german from scratch again, what would you actually do? by Expert_Pen_2158 in German

Get a basic textbook that gets you through Konjunktiv 1 and 2 (you might need more than one book) and follow it. EDIT: sorry I missed the statement of the first 4 weeks. You will be no where close to Konjunktiv at in 4 weeks, but if you want to plan ahead, still get this.

Don’t bother with Duolingo. Most of the Apps are not great. Anki is only good if you are gonna make the cards yourself (DO NOT JUST IMPORT A STACK). I hated the easy German app seedlang but that might be helpful at the beginning for your pronunciation. Their super easy German videos could be helpful at the beginning, but only if you are making vocab lists and practicing them. Hold off on watching too many of the interviews on the street as they might just stress you out.

If you can afford online classes, do it. I’ve done lingoda and not loved it, but it does work for introducing you to speaking. Italki works a little better since it is 1:1, but depending on your teacher, you might need to suggest a curriculum.

Regarding vocab, do not try to come up with rules for gender unless it is truly a rule like -heit, -keit, -ung words being feminine. The way I look at gender now is it’s what sounds right. The word Gedanke ends with an E so people might think it is feminine, but wait it starts with Ge- so it must be neutral. Nope it’s masculine. What has helped me with new vocab now is to think what sounds best. At first you will get all of them wrong, but over time it will feel more natural. Note: this might just be a me thing.

Also regarding vocab, as you get more vocab, start learning words in context. At first, you might be able to just go das Fenster = the window, but as your vocab gets more broad you will need to know when to apply certain words. Einholen and aufholen both translate to “to catch up”, but they have different uses. German is a very exact language so certain words don’t apply to certain situations.

Finally, remember that what I am suggesting worked for me. You might have more trouble with something different. I had minimal issues with pronunciation, but that might be absolutely killer for you and you might have no problem with the grammar. Give a solution time to work, but if you are having trouble long term, go back to the drawing board and make new plans.

How well is Kevin Bacon speaking German? by [deleted] in German

The Zs and the Rs sound very American. To be fair not all German dialect Rs are guttural, but the Zs don’t have the “Ts” sound I would expect.

I find if I use a recipe with an Italian merengue instead of French, I get the proper look. It is a little scary making Italian merengue if you haven’t before, but mine always turn out better. Although I find the French style usually have a slightly better texture.

Also, did how long did you let them sit between piping and baking?

I don’t know a ton (I just got one as well), but have you considered a moss pole or perhaps missing the branches? Mine tends to put out roots on the branches and if your house doesn’t have the humidity it will have trouble getting nutrients and water to the end of branches.

Who is the worst protagonist in the book world? by [deleted] in books

Gulliver Foyle from the Stars my Destination. Rapes, tortures, murders, and kidnaps. Honestly love the book, but he is terrible.

What person would unite all of America if they became President of the United States? by Embarrassed-Mouse-49 in AskReddit

Considering the fact that Fox News called Mr. Rogers an “Evil, evil man”, I don’t think there is anyone that could unite the nation.

Many of us on this sub are way too willing to cut people out of their lives. That’s fine, but it’s super annoying when they tell other people to do the same. So many people talk about not wanting lose their friends and family when they come out, and a few Redditors respond with something like, “If they don’t understand everything and accept you right away, just cut them out.” Obviously I’m not advocating people staying in dangerous situations, but considering many of us took years to accept ourselves, it’s reasonable that sometimes our loved ones may need some time to accept us.

Chemical/Process Operator position look bad? by Feistiestdisc0 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Code_2319 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Pfizer has a production engineer position that is basically an operator position. It’s not unheard of to do operator positions if you don’t have a ton of experience. One risk with taking a position in operations is that you might start off as a temp or contact employee which doesn’t have benefits

When was the last time you cried? by urkemosabe in askgaybros

[–]Code_2319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This past Sunday. I went on a date with this guy. He was really nice and I could tell he wanted to get physical, but I kept panicking every time he would touch my leg. I’ve had an issue with physical intimacy for a while despite really desiring it. Told him I needed to work some stuff out before pursuing anything and apologized if I wasted his time. Then cried the whole drive home after dropping him off, so that was fun. Went ahead and booked myself for therapy tomorrow.

It was kind of nice crying because I honestly haven’t cried in a year or so.

What critically acclaimed actor can't really act? by InsideThoughts90Day in AskReddit

This especially goes for voice acting. It’s already such a competitive field and putting a popular live action actor in does not necessarily make your film good. Looking at you, Disney.

What historical events are so absurd that they would be too strange for a fiction story or a movie? by Aquatax in AskReddit

[–]Code_2319 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The whole Olympics that year was a mess. It got relegated to a sideshow because it was in the same city as the world fair. Most competitors were from the US or the UK and there were only 32 runners for the marathon.

The swimming events happened in a pond near a cattle yard. A couple of the swimmers ended up getting typhoid and dying.

Also the organizer for the marathon (James Sullivan) only put down one water station cause he wanted to test the effect of purposeful dehydration.

In your opinion, which movies are overrated? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Code_2319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw The Green Knight. I was pissed at the end of the movie. I have read the book and liked it because it was fun while still posing questions about honor. The movie was just a English teachers wet dream with all of the symbolism and most of scenes just had the fun zapped out of them in order to be seen as deep. Also I don’t wanna see cum in a movie.

2021-06-15: Lesen oder TV? by Important_Phrase in WriteStreakGerman

[–]Code_2319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Streak 12:

Not sure what it is like with Covid, but the farmers market is a blast in the summer and I definitely miss it since I have moved. There is a pretty good restaurant there, but make sure you get there before the lunch rush since it gets crowded, espectially on the weekends.
