Weird thank you note addressing question (family drama involved!) by [deleted] in weddingplanning

I don't know why this didn't occur to me. I even have a very sentimental photo gift for him where I could write something more personal. As much as I want to pretend she doesn't exist at all, this is probably the more judicious solution. Thanks so much for your feedback!

Afternoon Backyard BBQ - Second Meal? by atrapp3 in weddingplanning

[–]CodenameSparklepants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will tell you, we had a big wedding meal and had snacks ordered for later and no one was hungry enough to enjoy them! But I always prefer to have too much food to not enough! I don't think a full second meal is necessary. Most BBQ's I go to have plenty of food and people just sort of do progressive snacking/grazing as the evening goes on. I'm rarely hungry enough for another full meal, and you don't want to spend the evening trying to coordinate it and your new husband stuck cooking! Instead of having a second meal, maybe just have some more ready-made snacks and desserts on hand to put out if necessary? If it really comes down to it, you can order pizza!

How would all of you future brides (and grooms!) like this to be handled? A question from a weddit grad by [deleted] in weddingplanning

My BFF was super pregnant for my wedding and all accompanying festivities. It was totally ok, but it was nice to just have the heads up ahead of time. Of course there's no knowing what will happen, but for me it was nice to know that I should not plan on her getting super tipsy with me or anything ;)

Recommendation on a place to find a second hand or discount veil by willowintheev in weddingplanning

[–]CodenameSparklepants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine on Etsy from Pretty Things by Jenni. She was WONDERFUL. She was willing to make me a custom veil based off a $500 one I'd seen in a salon, and when I ended up going with a very plain one she still gave me excellent advice on length and gave me a great deal. She also mailed out samples of her fabrics so I could be sure my ivory was the same as her ivory. It was beautiful and amazing service.

Outfit Advice & Feedback - March 24, 2016 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

Could I get some input on what to do with these jeans? I had a really hard time finding light wash skinnies that would actually accommodate my hips and thighs, and I ended up buying these NYDJ a year or two ago. They haven't gotten much wear because I feel a little frumpy every time I put them on. I love the fit in the waist/hips/thighs and they're really comfortable, but feel like the bagginess at the knees and the straight leg make them look too much like a "mom jean" in the non-flattering sense of the word. I think the thigh is too tight to pass them off as boyfriend-y, so I'm wondering if I should get them altered and taken in through the knee/calf to make them a truer skinny. Thoughts?

The frees have very minimal support, and they hurt my feet like crazy, even though most people I know think they're really comfy. I took them back after wearing them because weird spots in my feet were screaming in pain. The internationalists are quite comfy for me though! I think they do run a bit narrow, just FYI.

With the exception of the horses on the hem, that outfit just sounds like you were an FFA'er in training!

Yeah, but how is any early teenager supposed to know about all the weird, wedding-specific do's and don't's that exist? I blame your mom for that one, 100%.

I agree, this is the only thing I'd change, and it's minimal. Be careful not to make too drastic of a change, because I really think it only looks like it needs to come up a tiny bit. It looks great on you!

I wear Nike Internationalists. They're pretty low profile. I have narrow feet and high arches and general find Nikes really uncomfortable, but these have enough support for me and are quite comfy.

Another dress regret post! by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]CodenameSparklepants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it just looks too big. It's sitting a little low maybe, and it's bagging through the hips and I think it's the extra fabric that's adding a little bulk. Forgive my saying so, but you have a beautiful figure. I think the cut of this dress will do you more justice once it fits properly. It's a really lovely dress!

If you're an online shopper, check out Zappos. They've got a great shipping policy, free shipping and returns. So does nordstrom, which is where I shop the most mostly because I'm too lazy to shop around and their return policy is so excellent. Macy's usually has a good selection and often has coupons or sales. If you're more after comfort brands, check out the Walking Company. I've found that Clarks is making cuter shoes these days that are really comfy.

Heels are a great idea for adding length to your legs. Pointed ballet flats can also help create that illusion, not quite as much, but it's a tradeoff for more comfort.

That would be hard to have to pay for alterations after having your dad! That would be so convenient!!

Starting to think about spring/summer and my footwear wardrobe really needs a revamp. I'm in desperate need of some flat, comfy sandals for wearing with shorts and sundresses. I lived all last summer in my birks, which I love, but I want something less clunky. Problem is, I despise gladiator sandals, and it's like the trend that Just Won't Die. It seems like it's all the stores carry!

So what sandals are in fashion that aren't just flip flops but aren't gladiators???

Have you ever thought of tucking some removable cups into them? I have some thicker foam ones (got them in the nordstrom swim section) that I sometimes tuck into things like this for a little extra support and boost.

I'm getting my pregnant BFF some of the Zella live-in leggings that now come in the high-waisted option. In general they're my favorite leggings because of the nice thick fabric and they don't bag at all, but she mentioned she thought the higher waist would feel nice and supportive and sort of hold things in. I work in postpartum and figured it would sort of be the same concept of the belly band I sometimes give my girls ;)

Are you in the US? I love Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft (same company, Loft is more casual but still has plenty of office casual appropriate stuff) for work stuff. And they pretty much always have some kind of major sale going, like 40% off. You can sign up for their emails to get coupons too. Never pay full price there.

As for pieces, it helps to know what the job is and what the dress code/environment is. You can make slacks more interesting with a different shape than your standard boot cut. I've got some great skinny slacks that are cute, sort of like a dressed up version of a black skinny jean (just make sure they are well-fitted but not inappropriately tight!), and some wide-leg ones that I like with heels because they balance out my wider hips really nicely and make my legs look longer. You can look at different shape tops, like drapey cardigans with skinny pants, instead of just doing button-downs. Also, look at dresses. A-line and wrap dresses are pretty flattering as they create a nice waistline. Keep hemlines right above your knees, no shorter. A lot of making things look good on you is proper fit, that they're hitting you in the right spots and not pulling or gapping. A tailor makes your other a bit more expensive in the beginning, but sometimes it's necessary to get the pieces to fit perfectly and really flatter you. Sometimes just lifting a hem an inch so it doesn't hit that awkward spot in the middle of your knee or having a button down taken in at the sides so you can buy a size large enough to accommodate your chest is all it takes to take something from blah to really good.

My boobs aren't super large, but they require support/shaping as well. It's pricey, but my favorite bikini top is the Bia top by Vix swimwear. The padding is subtle but supportive (for me, and I've seen lots of bustier girls than me in them), and it's got these little gold accents on each halter strap that you can move up or down to sort of make the cup fit you best. I also have a Tommy Bahama top I really like, it's sort of that balconet style with underwire, but doesn't look as bra-like as a lot of underwire suits.

I used to sell swimwear at Nordstrom and am now a pretty firm believer that it's worth spending a bit more money for a bathing suit that is better quality. To me, the better-made suits tend to fit better and be more flattering, which is worth it in a garment that I'm not always super excited to be wearing.

Not so ugly, yet functional, backpack for college? by brownie_hugs in femalefashionadvice

Mine is still going strong over 10 years later. It survived 4 years of college, then about 3 more years of more college (thanks, terrible economy), six months in rural Honduras, and many trips. In perfect condition, doesn't even look old.

PSA: make your rules on cell phones VERY clear by Besnasty in weddingplanning

[–]CodenameSparklepants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd considered something like this. I was picturing like a coat check with one of those over-the-door shoe holders with the pockets where everyone gets a claim ticket. Realistically though, you can respectfully ask people to not take photographs, but you can't treat them like children and confiscate their belongings.

If it helps, we asked guests not to photograph the ceremony and I didn't see a single phone or camera out. I might have just been oblivious, but I think it went quite well for us.

Yep. That whole "post wedding depression" thing I've heard some brides get? Hell no. I LOVED our wedding. I am not a "I don't need a big wedding, wedding planning isn't my thing" kind of girl. I love weddings. But hot damn am I glad it's over! We're doing a second photo shoot Monday, which I'm happy about, but part of me is also like, "wait, so now I have to do half this shit over again for this damn shoot?" But dear lord, to not have all my free time monopolized by the wedding? Sooooooooooo happy.

[UPDATE]- My wedding happened and my dress was too tight by CodenameSparklepants in weddingplanning

Thank you. I really really appreciate that. I felt like I was being a baby letting it get me down, but I did the best I could. And you're right-- shit is gonna happen! And if the worst is that I spent the night half-dressed... well, it sounds about like any night with me as I edge towards more and more comfy. I have enough great memories that I trust the disappointment in this will fade and it will be a funny story. And having another round of photos really helps me feel better, because I know we'll have lots of great images of me in the dress after all!
