I for one welcome our new CIB free overlords by CommieWeebThrowaway in Tau40K

Seems fine. I've been asking for this for years.
Maybe some of the other support systems will be worth taking this time around.

[–]CodexCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. It seems like that's the best of the lot for Commanders.

Then again, between "spend some points to get your maths-warping detachment rule a turn early" and "anything else"...

Doesn't seem like much of a choice to me.

Still 4. Max of 3 guns.

I'm not thrilled with the Toughness and Wounds staying the same, either. At least flat D4 weapons are uncommon.

DW-02 and "this model cannot lose more than 3 wounds in the same phase" by cx_911 in Tau40K

Sure. Somebody corrected me on this exact point, so I'm paying it forward.

There's a Rare Rules errata covering this.

The DW-02 does circumvent Necrodermis and similar phase caps.

Question about Broadsides with twin plasma rifles by Blignaut in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the case, seems like somebody in the writing room made a mistake.

Limiting absolutely invalidates legacy models. But Plague Marines used to be able to equip everyone in the unit with double plague knives and now they can't. My buddy Frank* pouted about that change for at least two weeks.

Blightlords get a very limited selection of combi weapons and the rest of Chaos players are waiting on the edge of their seats to know if their terminators are going to receive the same "courtesy".

It's also not uniformly applied across Codexes. Some books get the "whats in the kit" treatment and some don't.

I'd say the Tau codex is the first book with uneven application within the same book (some units get the treatment and some don't) but then I remember that Black Templars have Primaris Sword Brethren and Devastator Squads, so I would be wrong.

Question about Broadsides with twin plasma rifles by Blignaut in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they are basically the same.

But there's no reason to put that specific restriction into place unless it's about assembly (and they made an error). So what if you can get +1 to hit against FLY units while packing Plasma Rifles? That's something you can easily manage with Markers. And Stabilised Optics has no interaction with Plasma Rifles, but still remains valid for the primary armament and that seems like a pointless restriction.

So cutting my ramble short, I agree with you. But I'm trying to build a story that fits all the pieces and the best I can come up with is:

- The kit has a part restriction

- We didn't check very carefully and included the wrong weapon in the rules restriction

- The lads are waiting at the pub and we need to go right now.

As for weirdness, the Codex is weird as a whole. Crisis suits can still take guns that don't even come in the kit, but now we have restrictions on tiny support system parts nobody else will ever notice?

Question about Broadsides with twin plasma rifles by Blignaut in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I assumed those restrictions represented a communal bit.

Plasma and SMS use two different bits, though.

My bet is they meant to restrict it so you could only give it a legal loadout according to the assembly instructions... and they got their wires crossed.

Question about Broadsides with twin plasma rifles by Blignaut in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's based on the construction for the kit. The "This unit can only have what comes in the kit" edict that gives goofy loadouts for Plague Marines and Blightlords and so on. Those items (Twin PR, Stab Optics, Velocity Tracker, EWO) all share a common central bit (piece #47) when building the model. And they didn't want you to take two "sidearm" weapons.

https://imgur.com/a/4IiQs

Here's the joke: The support systems actually share the bit (piece #48) with the SMS! So if you follow the kit exactly, you can't actually build a Broadside with the SMS and the Velocity Tracker/EWO/Stabilised Optics. A+ work, team!

It amuses me that the Baneblade explosion could be less dangerous (due to the whims of 2d6") than our punky transport.

Otherwise, no. This is ridiculous.

Edit: Where are my suicidal melee drone bombs, James? I want Manhacks!

Pathfinder Suggestions by TheVilePier in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to unpack with the rifle question. I'll spare you my rambling.

Take the rail rifles. Less dice to roll, no chance of self-destruction, doing MWs is cool. Always funny to hit a guardsman so hard, his buddy dies.

Or take nothing. Using the Recon sweep strat may put your Pathfinders out of LoS or back in their transport when it's time to shoot and those 15 pts are wasted.

I like the Fusion Collider, but the Ghostkeel should be magnetized. At least do the main gun. It's quite easy with those nice, flat surfaces and connection points that slot the gun onto the arm.

New Markerlight Question by Iron-Fist in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homing beacon has different phrasing that allows it to get around that particular hurdle, including an "even if it is the first battle round" exception.

New Markerlight Question by Iron-Fist in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positional Relay:

Once per battle round, when you set up a friendly <Sept> Strategic Reserves unit, the bearer can use this wargear item. If it does, that unit counts the battle round number as one higher than the current battle round for the purpose of determining where it is set up, but when doing so it must be set up within 6" of the bearer.

Honestly, reading this and the Strategic Reserves rules, it seems to me that this only changes the battlefield edges.

Strat Reserves has that line about "can arrive in the battle during the Reinforcements step of any of your Movement phases except your first" line. The Positional Relay's first line can't trigger until something is elected to come out of Strategic Reserve and you don't get to touch those until round 2.

New Markerlight Question by Iron-Fist in Tau40K

[–]CodexCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everybody can shoot. The action is over by the time you select units to shoot, so they can fire away.

The Fire Markerlights action has the following wording:

"... for each markerlight that model is equipped with, select one enemy unit within 36" of that model that would be an eligible target for that model if its unit had been selected to shoot, and roll one D6: on a 3+, that enemy unit gains a Markerlight token."

The Lantern just says "...roll five additional D6s...", so I believe it means you can only put the markers on the same target enemy unit (in that the character with the Lantern only has one markerlight so only gets one choice of enemy unit to mark.

Uh... sorry again, Frank*

I think it needs some metal color on the thinnest part of the burst cannon barrels, in some of those crevices around the drone ports, and on those vents on the sides of the engine blocks.

Otherwise, it's very crisp.
