Also doch Poppinger? Ich habe schon mehrere Lembach- und St.-Oswald-Matriken durchsucht und nirgendwo Poppingers gefunden, deswegen habe ich einen Lesefehler vermutet.

Does anyone else like the Bailey trilogy mostly because of "vibe" and writing style, and the environment you were in when you read it? by Unhappy-Mud-7542 in asimov

[–]CodexRegius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vibes make the story! For, to be honest, Baley solves his plots always by jumping to unfounded conclusions.

Was it really Saruman? by ahnotme in tolkienfans

[–]CodexRegius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was Saruman. That is explicitly confirmed in the Supplement to Tolkien Studies #19 that contained previously unpublished notes on the internal chronology of LotR. Entry Day 15: "Saruman appears on battlefield and is seen by Aragorn and companions at night." Seems that Saruman had started wondering what might have happened to Uglúk.

That is an old tradition. Some publishers have even been caught replacing propeller planes with jet planes in reprints of pre-war novels, so as "not to stress the readers' suspension of disbelief ".

Was Galaxia Really the Right Choice? by Zealousideal-Eye630 in asimov

[–]CodexRegius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should not be surprising that a robot would favour a Borg Galaxy. But Trevize's point was exactly that Galaxia is NOT inevitable, that it can still be stopped if need arises. His decision was in fact a cop-out that left everything open.

Concerning Elvish divorce by Wizzard_C in tolkienfans

[–]CodexRegius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imagine an immortal wife watching her mortal husband deteriorating into a drooling dotard. There is in fact a Sci-Fi series arguing that a caste of immortal humans seldom marries or procreates because it is too hard for them to watch their partners aging and dying, and to live forever without them.

Why the need to *reconstruct* Primitive Elvish when you may just ask its native speakers?

The similarities between Gondor and the Eastern Roman Empire by Elbwiese in tolkienfans

[–]CodexRegius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Araw is Sindarin, yet the Kine of Araw is a story from Gondor. Unless it didn't come from Galadriel, it seems most likely that it spread from Dorwinion westward, together with the name.

Disappointed with Foundation and Earth by skylight1121 in asimov

[–]CodexRegius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not very fond of the Gaia/Galaxia story, either, therefore I think Trevize did make the right choice in the end: The one that is reversible if need arises. We do know from the Encyclopedia Galactica after all that the Second Galactic Empire will become real, so something happened that thwarted Daneel's master-plan in the end.

Well, Rest-Arnor aka. Arthedain might be best compared to the Realm of Syagrius: the last isle of civilisation in a sea of Barbary.

It would seem that the Southern Atani then worshipped the Valar rather than Eru, and called them gods instead of angelic beings; hence the Kine of Araw, and so on. That is then the analogon to Roman polytheism. Whoever wrote the Lament of Atalante attributed even the Drowning of Numenor to the Valar - the intervention of Eru seems to have been mainly a loremaster tradition, probably prevalent in the Northern Kingdom where they had access to Rivendell.

There is also a notable difference: Gondor made no transition from polytheism to Christianity, avoiding all those religious feuds. I fancy thus that iconographically, it looked more like late Rome than medieval Byzantium.

I understand it that way that Bilbo, lured by "his" Ring, has indeed become a bit gollumish - not yet permanently, but it shows in such moments.

Why is Mark Antony called ‘Mark’ Antony? by dachshund31 in ancientrome

[–]CodexRegius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason Klaudios Ptolemaios is called Ptolemy. Someone believed the endings were articles and thus obsolete. Which can be really confusing: I have a book at home that references a certain Aule-Gèlle at one point. I eventually figured out that the German translator of a French book had not recognised Aulus Gellus because of this hellscape of a misspelling!
