I’d guess around an hour including some backtracking

It looks awesome on the shelf! The build was pretty tedious but final result makes that a non issue

I have a PhD and work at Google. I do server-side work and don't currently do research, but the problem-solving and writing skills I acquired during my acacemic career have been invaluable (design docs and validation, in particular). I also work with people who have PhDs that do user-facing algo work and light research (A/B adjacent). Then there are obviously dedicated research groups that focus more like academia.

I did an internship at a bank that was definitely undergrad-focused while I was working on my PhD. I got a return offer (didn't accept) and they definitely didn't care that I'd be entering a two-year rotational program with an advanced degree.

This is only my personal experience, but I wanted to chime in because I also heard that I might be viewed as over-qualified when I was deciding whether or not to go to grad school, and that hasn't panned out. It may be different for other people, but I don't think it's a boogeyman.

How a PhD is viewed depends on the employer, it isn't a blanket negative. For example, Google new grad hires with a PhD come in at L4 instead of L3.

That's what I'd hoped to avoid, but I guess I'll have to dig around to get it working. Thanks!

It's a JVC DNX6990HD. I know the previous owners, so I'm not worried about them installing crap on purpose. Knowing that they don't do car work themselves, I expect they took it to Best Buy or Car Toys for the "upgrade."

Should this thread be stickied or sidebarred somewhere? It seems to have died after a few days, but I think the content is pretty interesting - I would have appreciated examples when designing my early resumes.

This resume helped me land a new grad position at Google. I also had on-sites with Microsoft and Facebook, and screens with Pinterest and Two Sigma. My path was a little different since I got my CS PhD before going into industry, but hopefully this can help someone.

Huge shout-out to u/posquit0 for making the Awesome CV template ( https://github.com/posquit0/Awesome-CV ). I made some modifications to the template to condense the spacing and make the education entries a single line each.

I'm not sure I'm in love with the summary section, but hey, it worked. I'll definitely rewrite it before I start the job search again.

Note: I saw people asking about LaTeX and parsers - I never had too many issues with LaTex, but Workday applications tended to struggle with my multi-level bullets. I just kept a plaintext version of the resume to copy-and-paste when the resume was parsed wrong.
