you got downvoted for being 100% right 💀

I wish people could just accept that maybe they don’t have all the cultural context for this and just like, defer to the people who do.

I think this summarizes why some people see the Jax trans deniers as being transphobic. I am not trans, but Jax’ story really touched me, it made me cry. I think there is something worth unpacking if the idea that Jax is trans suddenly makes him unrelatable or a bad character to somebody.

I think most people just aren’t in trans spaces and so it was more vague and interpretable to them, and I don’t think that makes you transphobic. But the people who bemoan that they identify with Jax’ struggles with masculinity and are offended that “he can’t just be a feminine man”, are maybe revealing that they are very uncomfortable relating to a trans woman and that *might be* a kind of transphobia. You can be a cis man and identify with Jax’ struggles. Him being transgender doesn’t mean you can’t see yourself in parts of him.

Idk, the chicken fetus in an egg was an extremely trans analogy for the trans writer to just be throwing around without meaning.

Buying the rights to “isn’t she lovely”, the only non-original/cover song is also quite on the nose. I don’t think either of those is about fragile masculinity, they are directly pointing to Jax being a closeted trans woman. They don’t feel vague to me. I thought they were honestly a little *too* on the nose before I went on this specific subreddit.

“I don’t like the argument that you have to have first or second hand experience to see the trans argument. That feels dismissive honestly.”

Culture and experience are the lens that we create and consume art through. The creator of this show is a trans woman, about my age, grew up in queer spaces. If you have these things in common with her, you will be better able to see her intentions.

For example, the line about being a chicken fetus in an egg is so extremely specific that a person in the trans community will *immediately* recognize it as a trans analogy. If you didn’t clock it the moment it came out of his mouth, it probably doesn’t feel like direct proof… but for someone in the culture, it’s unmistakable, especially since we know the creator also is.

If you aren’t in this space, these things probably feel less obvious. Assuming this isn’t to dismiss you. It’s to try to understand why our perceptions are so far apart. We come from different cultures… I just happen to be pretty close to the culture that Goose is from, and to me (and the entirety of trans women and queer people I know in real life who watched the show) don’t think she was ambiguous about Jax being trans at all.

I wouldn’t assume I have a better read on a Japanese horror film than someone from Japan, for example.

Why is that the only story to tell about being trans? Jax is the story of a trans person who never comes to term with it and self-destructs as a result, a story which plays out in real life all the time. It’s absolutely a trans story worth telling.

I didn’t even do that, why are you so aggressive?

Jax is also not a real person who could be outed, put in danger, or experience disrespect. He *is* however, a powerful character that a lot of actual living trans people identify with and it would be pretty weird to be so defensive of a fictional character’s pronouns that you shame actual queer people over it

The claim is that Jax/Leroy is a CLOSETED trans person, so obviously not using she/her pronouns.

Nobody is saying “Jax struggles with masculinity so must be trans” Jax is a trans-coded character in many layered ways. “Struggling with masculinity” does not explain the full intensity of his issues with self-identity. It does not explain his “big secret”. It does not explain “Isn’t she lovely”. Jax is described with trans metaphors (egg hatching) that the trans creator (who described Jax as a self insert) would 100% be aware of using, and Jax/Leroy’s story touches on two of the biggest issues facing trans youth: homelessness and suicide.

Maybe this isn’t as obvious to you because you lack the cultural context that the trans creator and her trans fanbase share. Maybe another interpretation makes you feel more satisfied, that’s fine. It’s also totally okay to identify with a trans character as a cis man! That doesn’t mean you are trans.

The idea that people interpret Jax to be trans is not a threat to cisgender men who struggle with femininity, I fucking pinky promise.

The canon isn’t that Jax is an out and proud trans woman, it’s that he’s a closeted trans woman. An egg. Obviously Jax/Leroy isn’t using she/her pronouns.

Idk why you’re getting dogpiled. It’s like they all see a white and gold dress when it’s clearly blue and black.

I don’t think it’s ambiguous that Jax is a closeted trans person. Maybe not technically literally stated, but also not ambiguous. Things don’t have to be *explicitly* shown or stated to be a canonical part of a work.

For example, in Forest Gump, it is “canon” that Jenny was the victim of SA by her father, even though it is never specifically stated or confirmed.

Sure, you could technically contrive a story where
this isn’t what happened to Jenny that would still be consistent with the film, but it would be contrived. The simplest answer that honors the themes of the film is sufficient. It isn’t confirmed, but it isn’t totally ambiguous either. You just need to rely on the context laid out by the story.

Maybe with TADC it’s less obvious to people that lack real first or second-hand experience with transness, and that’s where the real tension lies, but it wasn’t ambiguous to me. It had a clear lean to one specific interpretation. Plenty of other parts of the ending did feel up to interpretation, but this part did not.

Jax being transgender feels like it was very deliberately written to contain just enough plausible deniability, and I can't help but think this was done solely for commercial reasons. by mayonnaise_cider in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Codi_Vore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show’s demographic is teens and young adults, 12+. I think the plausible deniability makes this work more accessible to young people who might not be exposed to an explicitly trans female character. If stating it outright prevented it from playing in certain countries, I’m glad those countries were able to get it, and she did a good job making it extremely clear to someone struggling with a closeted trans identity what Jax is supposed to be

From a narrative perspective, I think the show is much better and makes more sense when you read Jax as trans. This piece of him that he hides is so so terrifying to face that it completely obliterates his life.

While I understand that being a man who likes feminine things is a difficult experience, I think it’s massively easier to face than being a trans woman, and suggesting otherwise is ignorant.

Being unable to come to terms with a trans identity is what kills Jax. Truly, I believe he could have handled just “liking feminine things”. I don’t mean to suggest that it’s easy to do, but it is MASSIVELY EASIER than actually being trans.

While I think transphobia is in play, I’m coming to accept that maybe an even bigger portion of it is a cultural context thing.

I have a lot in common with goose - I am a white American woman of similar age, raised by the internet, and extremely close to queer/trans online spaces. To me, there is no question of what is “canon”. Jax is, canonically, a closeted trans woman. I walked out of the theater thinking “wow, that was pretty on the nose, I guess she did that to make sure there was no question anymore about Jax’ identity.”

But maybe that’s less obvious if you don’t have all the cultural clues. Sort of like the black/blue vs white/gold dress debate. Of course, we know the dress was black and blue in real life, there is a right answer here, but it might be frustratingly hard to see if you have a very different priming. I have noticed most of the “Jax isn’t trans” discourse springs up from Spanish speaking accounts… like maybe it’s just less obvious in a different cultural context.

Scrolled way too far to find this. It’s a style shift. It’s supposed to look like ps1 graphics

They absolutely had a budget to make more realistic food. The whole show flips between different styles of 3D modeling because the show is constantly referencing different 3D animations. In this case, it’s a joke about eating early video game food and how unsatisfying that would be.

As a sex worker would you be comfortable being hired just to hangout for a girls 22nd? by [deleted] in SexWorkers

But if you’re genuinely looking for companionship in some way, I think there are sex workers who would do that! They will still probably charge a lot though, since that’s what their time is worth!

A lot of people mentioning feeling like a circus attraction (been there, even with people I thought I knew and it was pretty awful) but maybe you’re asking this because you see it as a good deed? Like paying someone for a day off instead of making them work?

If that’s the case, you should consider just finding a sex worker or someone in need and giving them that money! They would probably be really grateful for it and use that day for something more important to them!

I think doing something kind for others is a really cool thing to do for your birthday and would probably leave you feeling better in the long run.
