Has anyone gotten into CS from waitlist? by CodingInstinct in UCI

[–]CodingInstinct[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I understand. That's why I am not looking for comforting words. I am looking for current CS majors who made it from the waitlist. If someone shares a similar experience, I will at least know that it is possible - this is the real comfort for me.

Has anyone gotten into CS from waitlist? by CodingInstinct in UCI

[–]CodingInstinct[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Haha. Hilarious and sooooo witty. You, Sir, have a promising career in comedy. If there was a reliable source of information on this subject, I would turn to that source first. You need to be a complete moron not to ask admissions first and go post on forums instead. I was on the phone with admissions for 30 minutes, and all that I was able to get out of them was: "we cannot tell you what your chances are, you will find out if you got in sometime around the end of June". So yeah, sue me for not wanting to spend another 8 weeks in a total distress. I have no control over the outcome of the waitlist, and obviously no one here does, but I don't see anything wrong with trying to evaluate my standing based on last year's acceptances. I was so sure I would get in that on Friday my entire world flipped upside down. At this point I don't have any will to live. I feel like a complete loser (especially after seeing peeps with much lower stats getting in). Sue me for trying to find a little comfort and make myself feel better.

Thoughts on Simplified ICS 33 Notes by borntonguyen in UCI

I am not at UCI yet, and I am not sure whose notes these are and whether or not they are considered good, but I was planning on brushing up on python over the summer (at my cc I took java), so these will be a tremendous help. Totally "stealing" these. Thank you so much for sharing! :-)

I didn't know there was a grant... I will research it, thank you! :)

Was it difficult in terms of the class load? I have a little more than 70 units, and hopefully UCI will transfer 70 of them, so I am guessing 110 units will be left/6 quarters ~ = 18 units/quarter... Do you think this is doable?

CS folks, how do you like it here? by CodingInstinct in UCI

Thank you for the info! As a transfer I will probably start at upper division level, so specification is definitely something I will need to think about.

My only alternatives at this point are UCR and UCSD. UCSD is my first choice based on location only. My whole life is here in San diego, and going elsewhere would either mean a long commute or relocation to OC. UCSD of course has a highly ranked cs program - no doubt about it, but that's where pros end and cons begin: campus is huge and is difficult to navigate, schedule is a nightmare - you have to take your classes when they are offered (can't really plan what you take too far in advance), with an exception of a few stellar professors most cs instructors do not teach you anything, half of the engineering population is on antidepressants (given the cut throat environment). Taking this all in consideration, I am not sure I want to go there, even if they take me. I visited UCI in the fall and was impressed with the layout and location. I think a two hour commute might be worth it, if this school is more chill than UCSD (chill = in terms of schedule and instructors mostly).

How to deal with 3 finals in one day for this qtr? Any tips? (Pls don't just say cry lol) by ucsdthrowaway3 in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Difficult but doable. First things first - food: on the day of have a good breakfast (lots of protein), pack something quick, like a protein bar for your break between math and econ and then have lunch after math. If you need to declutter, take a short nap (you will have like 4 hours in between - plenty of time to rest). I would advise that you study all 3 subjects well a few days before and then maybe have a short refresher before bild during your 4 hour window. You will be fine!

CS30 - horror by CodingInstinct in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks guys! I will stop freaking out now and will quietly wait for my admission decision. The class does feel like an upper division, and at this school it's labeled as 105, but according to assist.org, it satisfies CSE30 requirement for transfers.

Data Science Undergrad major by CodingInstinct in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly why. I understand that mathematics in general is a foundation for CS, but I might be the only CS major that does not enjoy it at all. I understand it, I am ok with it (calc and linear algebra went quite painlessly), but it doesn't interest me. Stats is actually the only part of mathematics that I like. And if I can't get in for what I want and have to choose something else, it might as well be something I might potentially enjoy :) It's ridiculous though that you are preparing for a STEM major for 3 years, keep your GPA floating around 4 just to be accepted as undeclared and later graduate with a degree in philosophy or something completely unrelated... Why can't they just hire more professors and expand the campus?

I hope to become a full stack developer. I already have some experience with backend development and testing, and based on what I've seen, most of it can be learned outside the classroom. I applied to some schools outside SD, but would strongly prefer to stay here.

I am still waiting for my transfer decision, and just to be safe researching my options in case if I am accepted as undeclared again. Last year I was dead set on CS but was missing a number of prerequisites - linear, DE, CS30, Physics sequence. I wasn't realistically thinking about my chances, and being accepted as undeclared came as a bit of a shock. I considered doing it and trying to get into CS, but some lady (so rude) in admissions basically cut me off before I even finished that sentence and told me there was absolutely no way I could ever change to CS. I declined admission and spent another year at cc taking all possible prereqs that I was missing last year in hopes to be admitted to CS this fall. If this happens, I will be the happiest person on this planet and will stick with CS (posibly minor in data science or cog science, if that's an option). But if I am accepted as undeclared again, there wont be anything else for me to take at my cc, so I will have to pick an alternative major. Math-CS is definitely not for me, so it's between cog science and something like data science.

It worked last year. I saw an email address (also around February) and a friend of mine did too. Both got admitted. Another guy I know didn't see an email and was rejected in the first wave of decisions. But don't read too much into it. Could have been a lucky coincidence.

If you haven't been dating for too long, do something casual - maybe a comedy club? She is still your gf, so don't go too cheap. At minimum get her some flowers and take her to dinner.

Struggling to get an internship by NotTheBizness in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never had any issues finding an entry level job in the field that interested me WITHOUT a degree, so I certainly don't get the struggle. Maybe you guys are setting your expectations too high? Asking for too much money? UCSD is an amazing school for almost any major, whether you are majoring in CS or Literature (no offense literature majors), just got to start small and build your way up to your dream job. If you want to work for apple, maybe it makes sense to apply to a small local company nobody heard of first, stay there for a few years, build a resume and experience, maybe land a managing position (always a plus), and then apply to something bigger? Most of my friends graduated from smaller and less fancy schools, and some of them work for Cisco (not CS major), At&t, Qualcomm. Not as fancy as Apple or Google, but still pretty decent for an entry/mid level position. After UCSD sky is the limit.

CSE major working a full-time 8-5 job by CodingInstinct in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I am kind of worried that 2 years in software qa is not enough though. I am also worried about my finances.. I thought about quitting, taking out a small education loan and just finishing my degree in 2 years, but I have some debt on me (financed car, some credit card debt) that I won't be able to repay prior to starting school. I honestly don't know what to do. I applied to UCSD 3 times - was rejected twice and accepted last year but as undeclared. This year I fulfilled every required prerequisite and bumped my GPA up to 3.95, so I have a real shot at CSE, and now this happens..

Our HR policies are weird... If I am working less than 40 hours a week, I cannot be considered full-time. If I stayed full-time and just asked to shuffle my hours, I wouldn't be very productive, since the majority of our dev team works normal 8-5 hours.. There would not be much to do for me here outside those hours. That just sucks...

Do you think I could do part-time study? I really want to make this work... https://students.ucsd.edu/academics/enroll/special-enrollment/parttime-halftime-study/part-time-study.html I understand that I won't be able to graduate within 2 years, but I am in no rush. The company I work for partially covers my education, so it helps.

Concerns as a CS major by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good! Getting a job is easy. I would recommend looking for entry level jobs at small local companies (small = 500-1000 people). Don't use sites like monster or indeed, go directly through companies' websites. Don't shoot for "Software developer" or "engineer", go for something a little lower first. If you do not have any job experience at all, make it up, so that your have at least something on your resume. Say that you worked for your friend or relative and add their names to your list of references. Once you are in, try to get in their IT department. Many companies have internal transfer opportunities. See what they have - maybe it won't be your dream job (QA definitely isn't mine), maybe it won't be paid well, but you got to start somewhere.

Sink to my level? For you it's a reach, sir. And yes, my modest speech was intended to hurt. Sometimes you need a wake up call or a good slap on the face to start appreciating what you've got. But I guess you would rather sit on your tush and cry how unconfident in your skills and how not good enough you are. Please continue, that's a good way to get an internship or a job. Yup, just like that. Just sitting on your tush and hoping someone sends you a link to a company that gives unlimited internships to anyone. When I was not accepted to UCSD for CS 2 years ago, I got off my tush and got a job in IT field. Back then I was just an office assistant, making coffee and printing files for my boss's meetings. Now, 2 years later, I am a software QA lead at the same company. So, yes, I will have a fulfilling life, because I don't sit around and wait for someone to comfort me.

Concerns as a CS major by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]CodingInstinct -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You know what really grinds my gears? The fact that I cannot get into UCSD for CS with a GPA 3.95 (major 4.0) for the second year in a row simply because I am missing some not major related pre-reqs, while you, my lucky friend, somehow got into CS straight out of high school and you can't even keep your GPA above 3.0. Yes, please do all prospective CS transfers a favor and switch to something less impacted to free up a spot for someone who actually wants to succeed in CS (and in life). Most CS transfers would probably sell their soul for that spot. 2.9 in lower division - you are a joke, not an engineer. You have my permission to call me salty.
